Four Newport and Abergavenny residents appear in court
The four defendants were accused of offences including assaulting police officers, possession of a knife, speeding, and refusing to identify a driver for police. Their cases were heard at Newport Magistrates' Court. Here's a round-up of the cases. Matthew Jenkins, 47, of Fairoak Avenue in Newport, admitted having a knife in Newport. Jenkins was accused of having a three-inch blade in the city on October 16 last year. He denied the charge, but was found guilty on June 11. Jenkins was sentenced to six months, suspended for 12 months, at Newport Magistrates' Court on July 9. He must complete 150 hours of unpaid work and 15 rehabilitation activity requirement days. The defendant must also pay £650 in costs and a £154 surcharge. Mohialdin Alrehead, 46 of Maesglas Crescent in Newport, admitted refusing to identify a driver to police. The defendant was charged with failing to give information on December 5 relating to the identification of the driver of a Toyota Prius who was suspected by police of committing a driving offence. Alrehead pleaded guilty at Newport Magistrates' Court on July 9, and was fined £540. The defendant must also pay £400 in costs and a £216 surcharge, and was hit with six penalty points. Kieran Mckenzie, 33, of School Lane in Newport, assaulted two police officers in Newport. Mckenzie was charged with two offences of assault by beating of an emergency worker in Newport on February 3. He was also accused of using threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour against one of the officers the following day with the intent to cause them harassment, alarm or distress. Mckenzie pleaded guilty to all three charges on June 2. The defendant was sentenced to six weeks, suspended for 12 months, at Newport Magistrates' Court on July 9. This was uplifted from four weeks due to the offences being against emergency workers. He must pay each of the officers £100 in compensation. Matthew Johns, 47, of Bretherton Way in Abergavenny, was found guilty of speeding in Caldicot. Johns was driving a Peugeot Partner at 36mph when he was caught by a manned speed camera on the B4245 on June 22. He was found guilty at Newport Magistrates' Court on July 9. Johns was ordered to pay £650 in costs, a £60 fine, and a £24 surcharge. He also had three points added to his licence.

Man refused service at Rhyl bar then drunk-drove in Abergele
Billyjo Ireland, 20, of Short Street, Newton-le-Willows, was handed a 17-month disqualification from driving at Llandudno Magistrates Court today (July 16). Ireland pleaded guilty to drink-driving during today's hearing. The court heard that, at about 2am on June 14, staff had refused to serve Ireland and another male at Ellis' Vaults in Rhyl due to being 'extremely intoxicated'. He was later stopped driving a Peugeot Partner van on the A548 Coast Road in Abergele. Ireland gave a reading of 70 micrograms of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath, exactly twice the legal limit. In mitigation, the court heard that Ireland had no previous convictions, and is a self-employed tree surgeon. The nature of his work means he relies on his ability to drive, while he was said to have shown 'full co-operation' with police. Ireland's engagement to his partner had been called off prior to his drink-driving. Sentencing, Deputy District Judge Peter Hayes ordered Ireland to pay £85 in court costs, a £120 fine, and a £48 surcharge. His driving ban will be reduced if he completes a drink-driving awareness course by June 2026. The judge told him: 'I appreciate the pressures upon you (to drive) for work purposes. Don't do it. 'Make sure this is the only time you're in court.'

Woman killed in Colwyn Bay crash after husband 'blacked out' and crashed into tree
A pensioner was killed as she and her husband made their way home because he was feeling unwell. Trevor and Doreen Brough, from Blythe Bridge Road, Caverswall, Stoke-on-Trent, were only a short distance from their second home in Mochdre, Colwyn Bay, when he lost control of their Peugeot Partner car. An inquest heard that after mounting the nearside kerb it crossed into the opposite carriageway of the A547, narrowly missing oncoming traffic, before crashing into a tree and becoming wedged against a wall. Mrs Brough, 77, who was not wearing a seatbelt, suffered multiple injuries and was flown to Ysbyty Glan Clwyd, Bodelwyddan, but died early the following day. The collision, which occurred on January 3, 2024, was captured on the dashcams of several vehicles and on the CCTV of residential properties. The inquest in Ruthin heard that when interviewed Trevor Brough said he could remember nothing about the collision but they had been to Colwyn Bay library and then the seafront. He told his wife he was feeling unwell and light-headed, and just wanted to get home. "As I went along it got worse and worse," he said. "I remember going round the roundabout but don't remember anything (after) then." Mr Brough said he had never suffered a blackout previously but the inquest heard that while visiting his wife in hospital he became unresponsive twice, once for five seconds and the second time for 20-30 minutes. Roger Smith, who had been driving from Mochdre towards Colwyn Bay, said the Peugeot swerved towards him, narrowly missing a parked car. "I don't know how I missed it. He must have been doing 50mph," he said. Elizabeth Dudley-Jones, assistant coroner for North Wales East and Central, said road conditions were good and no mechanical defects were found. She had been informed by North Wales Police that there was insufficient evidence for there to be a realistic prospect of conviction and so no charges would be brought against Mr Brough. One possibility, she said, was that Mrs Brough had grabbed the steering wheel to try to avoid other vehicles. Recording a conclusion of death in a road traffic collision, Mrs Dudley-Jones described it as "an exceptionally sad case" and that Mr and Mrs Brough were clearly "a lovely and well-loved couple".
