The Boston Red Sox made their big free agency splash this offseason on former Houston Astros third baseman Alex Bregman. The Red Sox signed the two-time All-Star to a three-year, $120 million contract with opt-outs included.

The addition has paid off so far for Boston as Bregman has a team-leading .299 BA and .913 OPS, along with 11 home runs and 35 RBI.
Recently, the Red Sox got positive news on the likelihood that Bregman remains in Boston following the 2025 season.
"Alex Bregman, the Red Sox' marquee offseason addition who is eligible to become a free agent again in four months, is all ears about a new contract — if there is anything to hear," Boston Globe's Tim Healey said (h/t SportsIllustrated). "That includes a potential extension before reaching the open market."
Bregman waited deep into free agency to sign his contract with the Red Sox, and structured his contract so he had flexibility to re-negotiate a new deal based on his performance.

The star third baseman looks like he could be the Red Sox's centerpiece for the future now, after Boston traded away Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants.
The Red Sox have already called up numerous young prospects, and Bregman would be the veteran staple at third base to lead Boston for the future.
"I always tell the team — and Alex directs me to tell them — we're always open to any conversation,' Bregman's agent Scott Boras said to Healey (h/t SportsIllustrated). 'Any player who plays well somewhere, it's something that's important for the team and important for the player. It's an additive."

Bregman is currently on the injured list as he deals with a quad injury. He has not seen the field since May 23, yet still leads the team in BA and OPS.
The Red Sox also got positive news about Bregman's potential return as Boston could see their third baseman return before the All-Star break, according to the latest reports.
Bregman was off to a fantastic start in Boston, and his presence has been missed. The third baseman was on pace for one of the best seasons of his career. A return soon would bode well not only for the Red Sox but for Bregman's future contract negotiations.
As for now, there's a lot of positivity in Boston around Bregman's likelihood to remain with the team for the future.

Diamondbacks activate outfielder Corbin Carroll from injured list

PHOENIX (AP) — The Arizona Diamondbacks activated outfielder Corbin Carroll from the 10-day injured list before Saturday's game against the Kansas City Royals. Carroll, sidelined since June 18 with a chip fracture in his left wrist, returned to his customary leadoff spot and was starting in right field against the Royals. He was injured when he was hit by a pitch thrown by Toronto's Justin Bruhl. Carroll said before Saturday's game that his wrist felt better the last couple of days and he played in a minor league game on Friday in the Arizona Complex League to test it out. The 2023 National League Rookie of the Year has 20 home runs, a major league leading nine triples and a .255 batting average this season. To make room for Carroll on the roster, the Diamondbacks optioned utilityman Tim Tawa to Triple-A Reno. ___ AP MLB:

Caitlin Clark Takes Huge Shot At WNBA Commissioner Over Major Financial Issue

Caitlin Clark Takes Huge Shot At WNBA Commissioner Over Major Financial Issue originally appeared on Athlon Sports. For years, the WNBA struggled to survive, with teams often making it thanks to their NBA counterparts. Advertisement We saw multiple teams fold over the years, all while the players, even the biggest stars, had to take their talents overseas to play during the offseason to make ends meet. Fortunately, that reality is starting to change, and Caitlin Clark has plenty to do with that, as she's drawn countless eyeballs to the game since her rookie campaign. Clark took a shot at the league and Commissioner Cathy Engelbert during an Instagram session after winning the Commissioner's Cup against the Minnesota Lynx: Advertisement "You get more for this than you do if you're a champion," Clark said. "Makes no sense. Someone tell Cathy to help us out." The WNBA postseason gives teams a prize pool of $500,000, but that money is split among teams based on how far they get in the playoffs. That means the WNBA champion ultimately gets roughly $250,000, which amounts to around $20,000 per player. In contrast, whoever wins the Commissioner's Cup gets $500,000, which makes up for $30,000 per player, as well as a $120,000 prize in cryptocurrency thanks to the league's partnership with Coinbase, which is also split among all players. Advertisement The WNBA is finally starting to thrive, not survive, and the league will eventually have to compensate the players accordingly. Minnesota Lynx Lose Key Player for Rest of WNBA Season

Minnesota Lynx Lose Key Player for Rest of WNBA Season originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Minnesota Lynx have been playing fantastic ball this WNBA season, but they will have to move forward without one of their key players. News came down on Friday that wing Karlie Samuelson will be lost for the rest of the season. Advertisement Samuelson injured her left foot in a game against the Connecticut Sun on June 29, forcing her to the sidelines. Minnesota probably was hoping for some good news, like Samuelson just suffering a twisted ankle. Well, it's much worse than that and the Lynx have to move forward without Samuelson. According to a team press release, Samuelson will undergo season-ending surgery on her left foot. Minnesota coach Cheryl Reeve has to adjust lineup without Samuelson "An MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) was taken at Mayo Clinic Sports Medicine in Minneapolis, where Samuelson also met with Mayo Clinic foot and ankle specialist, Dr. Norman Turner III, to further evaluate and discuss treatment options," the team said in a press release. Advertisement "Samuelson will undergo surgery and subsequently miss the remainder of the 2025 season. Further updates on her progress will be provided when available." Samuelson, 30, is a WNBA veteran who also has played for the Los Angeles Sparks and Washington Mystics. She had played in 16 games for Minnesota this season, averaging 3.3 points, 1.3 rebounds, and 1.1 assists, Yahoo Sports reported. Samuelson joined the Lynx this season, looking to win a WNBA title with the always competitive team. Now, though, her title aspirations have been put on hold. Minnesota head coach Cheryl Reeve now has to make adjustments to her lineup without Samuelson around. This story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Jul 5, 2025, where it first appeared.
