Cancel permits if autos charge more: Minister
Almost two weeks after public anguish over the exorbitant rise in auto fares following the ban on bike-taxi operations in the state, transport minister Ramalinga Reddy Saturday instructed the transport commissioner to take action against ride-hailing mobile apps and regular autos if they are found charging illegal fares. Instructions have been given to transport department officials to cancel auto permits and book cases for illegal fare charges.Interestingly, the direction came from the minister hours after #stepdowntransportminister was trending on social media platform X over the ban on bike taxis.
Ramalinga Reddy told TOI he himself has received complaints from the public over auto drivers and aggregators charging exorbitant fares. The letter addressed to the transport commissioner states that on June 18, 2025, the ride-hailing mobile app Rapido was charging ₹100.9 per km. 'This kind of daylight robbery is unpardonable and strict action should be taken,' the letter states.
Reddy cited
ride-hailing apps
as the reason for exorbitant fares being charged. 'A majority of auto drivers have attached their vehicles with ride-hailing apps. These apps, instead of following fare rules of the govt, are charging higher auto fares and other fees,' he said, adding: 'Enforcement staff will identify irregularities and take action. No auto drivers should collect more fare from passenger.'
Acting on HC order: Reddy
On the trending hashtag, the minister said, 'We've acted against bike-taxi operations as per the high court order. On social media, people do make comments about the decision taken by authorities, I don't have much to say about that. Earlier, bike-taxi operations were illegally operated. It is to say that the state govt does not support illegal operations.'
Following the letter from the minister, transport commissioner Yogeesh AM told TOI that enforcement officials have been asked to act on the illegal collection of fares. 'When customers street hail an auto, the driver should charge the fare as fixed by the regional transport authority. Ride-hailing apps can charge a 10% service tax in addition to the fares fixed by RTA. Other fees and charges on customers are illegal.' As per the last revision in 2022, RTA has fixed Rs 30 for the first 2km and Rs 15 per km thereafter.

Genpact clarifies 9-hour workday amid employee concern
Bengaluru: Amid online backlash over reports of a 10-hour workday, Genpact has clarified to TOI that it follows a 9-hour workday—not 10, as previously speculated. However, Accenture's work week is capped at 45 hours a week aligned with all the state government's policies. Infosys requires employees to clock in for 9 hours and 15 minutes each day, while HCL follows a standard 9-hour workday. The 10-hour workday has reignited conversations around work-life balance, productivity expectations, and incentive models within India's IT sectors. Sanketh Chengappa KG, director and business head – professional staffing, Adecco India, said, "Under Indian labour regulations, the standard workweek is capped at 48 hours, with any additional hours qualifying for overtime compensation at double the regular rate. While these provisions are not always stringently applied to white-collar roles, the recent push toward extended working hours has reignited critical discourse around employee rights, mental well-being, and equitable remuneration, particularly when productivity benchmarks are already being met. " Krishna Vij, business head at Teamlease Digital, said, across the tech industry, there is a noticeable shift toward extended work hours, tighter timelines, and evolving boundaries between work and personal time. "While some organizations view this to enhance flexibility and drive productivity, there are also growing conversations around the need to manage workload, maintain employee well-being, and ensure sustainable performance. State launches drone surveys to curb illegal mining, boost revenue
Nagpur: In a major tech-driven reform to curb illegal mining and boost state revenue, the Maharashtra govt on Saturday launched a pilot project in Pune district to conduct drone-based surveys of mining sites using advanced LiDAR technology. The initiative aims to bring accuracy and transparency in measuring minor minerals like murum, sand, and stone extracted across the state. Revenue minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule, who reviewed the project with district officials, said the system will ensure digital mapping, prevent revenue loss, and aid in environmental monitoring. "Mining data on paper often differs from ground reality. Accurate drone mapping will plug this gap and control unauthorised excavation," he told TOI. The LiDAR-based drones will measure excavation volumes with high precision and prepare geo-referenced maps of both active and closed quarries. These will be digitally recorded and serve as base data for future surveys. The system will also enable the govt to develop a web-based interface for real-time inspection and virtual monitoring of all mining sites. The Pune pilot will cover 97 identified quarries. Based on its success, the project will be expanded across other districts in phases. "Districts across the state are witnessing large-scale mineral excavation. This initiative will help maintain environmental balance and increase govt revenue through accurate, tech-based monitoring," said Bawankule in a statement.

Act promptly on plaints about substandard seeds, fake fetilisers: DC to officers
Kalaburagi: Deputy commissioner of Kalaburagi, Fauzia Tarunam, has directed officials to take immediate action upon receiving complaints from farmers about substandard seeds and spurious fertilisers. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now She emphasised the importance of regular inspections at private and dealer shops. Speaking to TOI, she said she discussed in detail with agricultural officers and farmers regarding the approval of the Krishi Yantrikaran sub-campaign, micro-irrigation, sugar cane crop, and survey action plan under centrally sponsored schemes for 2025-26. With the arrival of monsoon, she stressed the need for seamless seed distribution across all taluks, urgent resolution of soybean seed issues, and ensuring an adequate fertiliser supply. The DC highlighted the importance of educating farmers about proper fertiliser application, crop diversification, and collaboration with local model farmers to promote crop rotation practices among small-scale agriculturists. Further, she said there should be swift processing of applications for agricultural equipment, including drip irrigation and sprinkler systems, provided under various govt schemes. The administration suggests creating and sharing short videos featuring successful farmers on social media platforms to inspire others, utilising these networks for promotional purposes. Given the early onset of the monsoon this year, authorities are focusing on raising awareness about crop surveys and insurance. Farmers will be encouraged to submit applications through their mobile devices to avoid confusion. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Technical challenges in crop surveys require prompt coordination with state-level officials for resolution. Villages missing from taluk maps need to be brought to state authorities' attention. The administration emphasises organising small group training sessions for farmers, focusing on crop selection based on soil types and providing essential agricultural information and awareness. "Banks, both co-operative and nationalised, have been advised to ensure a respectful approach while providing agricultural loans and handling crop insurance matters. If in case any farmer raise grievances regarding loan-related issues, bank officials will be held accountable for their actions," the DC said.
