Techie kills his married girlfriend in Bengaluru, arrested

Indian Express09-06-2025
The Karnataka Police Monday said they have arrested a man for allegedly murdering a married woman with whom he had an illicit relationship.
The body of the victim, Harini R, 33, a resident of Kengeri, was found with multiple stab wounds in a room at the Emara Galaxy GM Royals Oyo Lodge in Uttarahalli during the intervening night of June 6 and 7. The arrested accused has been identified as Yashas, 25, a BCA graduate and tech professional, also from Kengeri.
According to the police, Yashas murdered Harini as she tried to end the relationship after her husband became suspicious of her. Enraged by her decision, Yashas allegedly brought a knife with him to the hotel room and stabbed her at least 12 times in the torso before fleeing the scene.
The police traced Yashas after receiving information that he had been admitted to a hospital with a stab wound. Investigations revealed that he had inflicted the injury on himself in a bid to mislead authorities and make Harini's murder appear as a suicide attempt. He was arrested on June 8 after doctors at KIMS Hospital declared him fit for discharge.
Harini was married to farmer Dasegowda H P, 41, since 2012. Police investigations revealed that Harini and Yashas met on Facebook three years ago, and their relationship reportedly turned intimate in the last six months. However, of late, Harini started avoiding Yashas and repeatedly asked him to stay away.
According to the police, the two had checked into the hotel on June 6 to discuss the matter.
In his complaint, Harini's husband said he had suspected her frequent phone conversations with Yashas and had informed her brother and mother. Despite being warned, Harini allegedly continued to be in touch with the accused.

HC warns of severe action for cybercrimes targeting children

Underscoring the seriousness of cyber offences targeting children, the Delhi High Court has said that such crimes will attract severe consequences, reflecting the grave psychological impact on victims. While upholding the conviction of a man in a cyber-bullying case involving a minor, Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma, in a judgement delivered on July 28, stated that digital abuse, though often faceless and silent, can be as mentally scarring as physical violence. The court was hearing an appeal in a 2016 case registered following a complaint lodged by the mother of a 14-year-old girl, a Class IX student, who became the target of a cyber assault. According to the prosecution, the victim received a morphed nude image with her face superimposed on another person's body, accompanied by a threatening message warning that the obscene content would be posted on Facebook unless she complied with the sender's demands. 'The present case reflects a textbook example of cyber-bullying, where an adolescent girl, who was pursuing her studies, became a victim of a targeted assault upon her privacy and dignity,' said Justice Sharma. 'Such conduct, in the virtual world, has very real and devastating consequences in the real world,' the judge said. The High Court said the psychological impact on a minor is difficult to quantify in words in a judgment. A trial court convicted the accused under relevant provisions of the Indian Penal Code, the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, and the Information Technology Act. He was sentenced to rigorous imprisonment for five years. The High Court found no grounds to interfere with the conviction, noting that the plea for leniency on behalf of the man 'stands on a fragile footing'. 'It is important not only to detect and punish such crimes effectively but also to affirmatively uphold a child's right to safety, dignity, and mental well-being in such cases,' it added.

Andhra Techie Invested Rs 1.74 Crore In Fake Apps, Cybercrime Gang Busted

Hyderabad: The Anantapur police in Andhra Pradesh have arrested a five-member gang and seized a substantial haul of cash and electronic devices linked to a sophisticated online investment fraud. Police officials said the operation, masterminded from Cambodia, is the largest cybercrime gang arrest in the district's history. "This is the biggest cybercrime gang arrest in our district's history," said Anantapur Superintendent of Police P Jagadish. "The money was being converted through a network of fake accounts in Delhi and prepared for transfer abroad via cryptocurrency. We have seized Rs 41.20 lakh in cash, eight mobile phones, a car, 20 ATM cards, 15 SIM cards, five bank passbooks, 10 cheque books, and two Wi-Fi routers," he said. The arrests were made following an investigation into a complaint filed by Narasimhappa, a software engineer from Veparla, Rayadurgam Mandal. He said he lost nearly Rs 1.74 crore to the cyber fraudsters. The investigation uncovered the gang's method of operation, which began with a Facebook post offering investment tips. Narasimhappa was lured into WhatsApp groups operated from Cambodia, where he was instructed to use fake applications like "VIP66 Bajaj Investment" and "K26 Zerodha Market Insights". After an initial investment of Rs 12 lakh, the gang allowed him to withdraw a fake profit of Rs 5.50 lakh to gain his trust. Believing the scheme was legitimate, Narasimhappa invested a total of over Rs 1.73 crore in a series of transactions between April 15 and May 14, 2025. His suspicion was finally aroused when he was asked to pay a 40 per cent tax and brokerage fee to withdraw a purported profit of Rs 3.40 crore. Police teams, acting on Narasimhappa's complaint, began a thorough investigation. The probe revealed that the swindled funds were transferred to 13 fake bank accounts across the country. The arrested suspects have been identified as Bhavanesh Goyal (48) from West Delhi; Dharmendra Singh (43) from Bulandshahr, Uttar Pradesh; Sapireddy Kodandaram Durgasai Prasad (32) from Hyderabad, Telangana, and Kongati Krishna (43) and Vadlamudi Phanikumar (39), both from NTR district. The police said a private bank manager who allegedly helped the gang's operations is expected to be arrested soon.
