DeChambeau headed for Ryder Cup return after strong rally at British Open
PORTRUSH, Northern Ireland (AP) — Bryson DeChambeau was among the players receiving a personal message from American Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley at Royal Portrush this week.
'He put something in our lockers that was pretty inspirational,' DeChambeau said Sunday.
'It meant a lot.'
Helped by a strong comeback at the British Open, DeChambeau appears to be headed for a return to the U.S. team for the matches against Europe at Bethpage Black in September.
He looked to be on his way home after shooting 7-over 78 in the first round Thursday, only to dig deep and bounce back with 65-68-64 finish. He was in a tie for 10th place, following up a tie for fifth at the Masters and tied second at the PGA Championship.
DeChambeau has seven top-10 finishes in his last 13 appearances in the majors, including a win at the U.S. Open last year.
DeChambeau solidified the No. 5 spot in the points standings for U.S. Ryder Cup qualifying. The top six qualify automatically to the team and Bradley also has six picks.
Because he plays on the LIV Golf circuit, DeChambeau cannot gain any more points before the qualifying period finishes after four more tournaments.
One way or the other, DeChambeau figures to be at Bethpage for his third Ryder Cup.
'I hope I can bring a lot of energy and a tsunami of a crowd that's going to be rooting for Team USA,' said the 31-year-old DeChambeau, whose popular YouTube channel adds to his status as one of the world's most famous golfers.
The U.S. team will be looking to win back the cup from Europe after a loss in Italy in 2023, when DeChambeau didn't play.
'This year's no joke,' he said. 'We're tired of it. We're tired of losing.'
DeChambeau was proud of the way he recovered from his poor round on Thursday at Portrush, helped in part by the better-than-forecast conditions at the links course off the North Atlantic.
'I always told you guys I like it when it's fair conditions. I can play well,' said the player nicknamed 'The Scientist.' "I still have to crack the code when it's raining and windy. But I feel like we're getting close to some opportunities and solutions for that.
'It just takes a long time to develop stuff. I'm starting to learn.' Garcia's rage
Sergio Garcia played his last 16 holes at the British Open without a driver after snapping it in a rage after a bad drive.
Garcia slammed his driver onto the ground after hooking his tee shot on No. 2. It split in two and he threw the half containing the club head toward his golf bag.
'I've done that 50 times, and I've never broken a club,' he said. 'The shaft just snapped in half and I was surprised.'
Garcia went on to make birdie at the second hole and had four more in a 68 to finish 3 under for the tournament. Lowry's grandstand finish
Shane Lowry stood over his ball beside the green at No. 18 and thought of Justin Rose 27 years ago.
Lowry said it would have felt 'pretty cool' to hole out at the 72nd hole to cap the Irishman's homecoming at Royal Portrush, just like Rose famously did as an amateur at Royal Birkdale in England in 1998.
The ball rolled toward the hole, struck the flagstick and stayed out. Lowry signed for a closing 5-under 66 but there would be no second claret jug for him at Portrush, after 2019.
Who knows, the next time the island of Ireland stages a British Open it might be at Portmarnock — a course 30 minutes from Lowry's house. The R&A has started a feasibility study regarding whether the seaside links north of Dublin can be added to the 10-venue rotation.
'I'd be able to stay at home and play in an Open,' Lowry said. 'It's one of the best golf courses in the world. I think it's good enough to host an Open, and hopefully it will soon.'

7 most intriguing rookies to watch during Philadelphia Eagles training camp
With Philadelphia set for its first practice of the preseason, we're looking at seven intriguing rookies to watch during Eagles' training camp. The Eagles have star power at just about every position, and unlike past years, it'll be hard for an undrafted rookie to crack the starting lineup, let alone make the 53-man roster. Philadelphia added ten draft picks to their roster in this year's NFL draft, landing Jihaad Campbell near the end of Round 1 to cap things off. Overall, the consensus for Howie Roseman centered on draft value and landing prospects who can develop into starters regardless of the round in which they were selected. Philadelphia has one of the NFL's most explosive offensive units, but saw eight players depart on defense. Roseman used the Eagles' first five picks to acquire defensive players, resulting in a total of six defenders. We won't know the actual impact of this year's class until these players hit the field and have time to develop, but on paper, it does appear that Roseman has maintained and created another Super Bowl window. With Philadelphia set for its first practice of the preseason, we're looking at seven intriguing rookies to watch during Eagles' training camp. OL Marcus Tate-Clemson Philadelphia signed Tate (6-5, 321 pounds) after the former Clemson star participated in the Eagles' Rookie Camp earlier this spring. A four-year starter, Tate saw action in 42 games (37 starts), logging 2,502 snaps during his Tigers career. Tate became just the third true freshman offensive lineman in Clemson history to start a season opener in 2021. Edge Rusher Antwaun Powell-Ryland The biggest steal could be Virginia Tech pass rusher Antwaun Powell-Ryland. Powell-Ryland has spent the last two seasons at Virginia Tech, having transferred from Florida before the 2023 season. In 2024, the 6-foot-2, 258-pounder started all 12 games he played, accumulating 43 total tackles and 16 sacks, which ranked third in FBS. Powell-Ryland earned first-team All-ACC and Associated Press All-American third-team honors during his redshirt senior season with the Hokies. DB Andrew Mukuba A player who can emulate C.J. Gardner-Johnson's production, Mukuba possesses the coverage skills to play in the slot and the athleticism to control the deep center field as a "robber," utilizing his instincts, burst, and ball skills to make plays. DB Maxen Hook – Toledo A former teammate of star cornerback Quinyon Mitchell, Hook was a first-team All-MAC selection in 2024, his third straight season earning the honor. He was the third Toledo Rocket to make an All-MAC team in four seasons. Hook could be this year's Reed Blankenship after finishing 24th in the nation with 8.92 tackles per game. Hook finished his career with 356 tackles, seven interceptions, and 22 passes defended in 52 games. OL Hollin Pierce – Rutgers The 6-8, 341-pound Trenton, New Jersey native was Rutgers' first offensive lineman to earn All-America status since Anthony Davis in 2009. He also earned second-team All-Big Ten honors in 2024 after starting 13 games at left tackle. RB ShunDerrick Powell – Central Arkansas Powell rushed for over 4,000 yards in his collegiate career with 42 total touchdowns. He had eight 100-yard games in 2024. The two-time FCS All-American is a three-down running back and potential special-teams standout. WR Darius Cooper – Tarleton State A player to watch, the St. Louis, Missouri native joins the Eagles from Tarleton State, where he earned first-team Associated Press FCS All-America honors in his senior season. The 5-foot-11, 210-pound receiver is athletic and finished second in Division I in receiving yards with 1,450 (the second most in single-season school history) and sixth in touchdowns with 14 (the third most in single-season school history) in 2024. In 48 career games, Cooper accumulated 164 catches for 3,185 yards and 29 touchdowns, averaging 19.4 yards per catch. QB Kyle McCord There's been talk of McCord having the talent to unseat Tanner McKee as the Eagles' backup quarterback. Philadelphia loves the deep ball, and last season in the FBS, McCord ranked second in yardage (1,273) and posted a 96.4 PFF grade on throws of at least 20-plus air yards. OL Myles Hinton An early candidate for the Eagles' swing tackle position, He started 20 games at right tackle and 11 games at left tackle during five seasons in college. LB Smael Mondon Jr. Another Swiss army knife, the former Track and field star was a three-year starter at Georgia, playing inside linebacker, outside linebacker, and slot cornerback. Like Campbell, Mondon Jr. is an elite tackler with a 7.8% missed tackle rate at Georgia.

Team USA Ryder Cup 2025 update: Who's in the running after The Open?
The 2025 British Open is over, which means the end of the golf season is looming... but then there's the Ryder Cup in September, the event that we all look forward to as USA takes on Europe again and hopes to end its mostly losing ways. And after Scottie Scheffler dominated The Open, there's a lot to think about when it comes to the United States team. There are obviously six auto-qualifiers based on the standings, but then captain Keegan Bradley has some serious decisions to make with Captain's picks. So let's take a snapshot as the mid-August deadline approaches for putting together a team that can take down the always-formidable Europeans who will play on the road at Bethpage in Long Island. Tier 1: The current auto-qualifiers 1. Scottie Scheffler (qualified) 2. Xander Schauffele 3. J.J. Spaun 4. Russell Henley 5. Bryson DeChambeau 6. Harris English DeChambeau's unreal final three rounds at Royal Portrush basically guaranteed him a spot no matter what happens in the next month. But this group is kind of fascinating -- English was on the 2021 team that won the Ryder Cup, Henley and Spaun would be rookies. You have to like having the world's best golfer on your squad. Tier 2: Probably Captain's Picks They're just outside the top-six at the moment, but you have to figure they're going to hear their names called given experience and how they've played this year. Tier 3: Will captain Keegan Bradley pick Keegan Bradley the player? How awkward for Bradley! He's played so well that he'd be an obvious pick for any other captain! I think he does it and becomes the first player-captain since Arnold Palmer in 1963. Tier 4: In the running for Captain's Picks An interesting mix here. You've got names with experience and some possible rookies playing in good form. If it's me, I go experience over form, with apologies to McNealy and Gotterup. There's still a lot of golf to play, though! Current Ryder Cup standings (top-six qualify)
