Veeam launches Kasten v8 to unify VM & Kubernetes protection
This latest release introduces enhancements that allow organisations to manage both traditional virtual machines (VMs) and modern Kubernetes applications through a single platform. The new version also integrates with Veeam Vault, offering a fully managed offsite backup solution, and is intended to improve operational efficiency by consolidating data management under Veeam's suite of tools.
Gaurav Rishi, Vice President of Product Management at Veeam, commented on the launch: "Veeam Kasten for Kubernetes v8 marks a significant leap forward in our mission to provide enterprises with unparalleled data resilience for Kubernetes environments."
"This latest version enables organisations to seamlessly manage traditional VMs and modern applications on a single platform while ensuring data is secure and accessible. New integration with Veeam Vault provides a fully managed offsite backup solution that eliminates unexpected costs, benefiting existing Veeam customers wanting to expand their data protection to include Kubernetes. By consolidating all their data under Veeam's trusted management, customers can implement a comprehensive solution for their Kubernetes application workloads, maximising operational efficiency and enhance data resilience in today's complex IT landscape."
Kasten v8 arrives with several new features targeted at enterprise customers. Among those is the ability to unify data resilience for VMs on Kubernetes alongside containerised applications, aiming to streamline operations and increase efficiency.
The file-level recovery (FLR) function for KubeVirt VMs facilitates granular restores, allowing recovery of individual files from backups without recreating whole VM clones. This is designed to support enterprises using solutions such as Red Hat OpenShift Virtualisation.
The release also introduces a virtual machine dashboard intended to provide a workload-centric perspective, helping teams identify each VM's dependencies within Kubernetes clusters and configure backup consistency more easily.
Veeam is extending freedom of choice to organisations through enhanced multi-CPU architecture support, which enables use of ARM and IBM Power to optimise costs. The company has also broadened support for the NetApp Trident storage provisioner and introduced backup capabilities for ONTAP NAS "Economy" volumes.
These features allow for more flexibility in how companies back up data across different storage systems.
Security measures have been expanded with this version. Features such as secure self-service cross-cluster migrations, restricted privileges for Kasten Pods and ISO 27001 certification are intended to increase customers' security profiles.
The adoption of a least-privilege approach is designed to both minimise risks and improve compliance. The process of encrypting passkeys has also been simplified to help enterprises maintain robust security while improving operational efficiency.
Operational improvements in Kasten v8 include a refreshed user interface, updated policy management systems and the Restore Point Catalog, designed to help administrators manage backups and restore operations more easily. The Per Policy Protection Status provides a clearer view into backup policies for specific namespaces, making it easier to identify and address potential issues quickly.
In support of Red Hat OpenShift Virtualisation Engine, which is positioned as a replacement for legacy virtualisation solutions, Veeam is introducing Kasten for Modern Virtualization.
This tailored pricing option aims to integrate with Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization Engine and is the result of collaboration between Veeam and Red Hat.
Mike Barrett, Vice President and General Manager of Hybrid Platforms at Red Hat, said: "Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization Engine provides customers with a dedicated virtualisation edition to migrate, manage and scale virtual machines. As enterprises advance their hybrid cloud strategy by rapidly re-hosting virtualised apps to platforms designed for modern virtualisation, data resilience remains a strategic imperative.
With the latest release of Kasten, Veeam continues to deliver innovation aligned with these evolving needs. Veeam's Kubernetes-native architecture and optimsation on Red Hat OpenShift provides our customers with a more scalable, cost-effective solution to secure virtualised workloads today—while laying a strong foundation for container adoption over time."
Veeam Kasten for Kubernetes v8 and Kasten for Modern Virtualization are now available to enterprises seeking a unified solution for managing data resilience in both virtualised and containerised environments.

Veeam named Leader in Gartner 2025 backup & data report
Veeam has been named a Leader in the 2025 Gartner Magic Quadrant for Backup & Data Protection Platforms for the ninth time in a row. Gartner has also placed Veeam in the highest position for Ability to Execute for the sixth consecutive year as outlined in the latest Magic Quadrant, a research report that assesses vendors in the backup and data protection sector. The recognition comes as Veeam has introduced a series of new capabilities, especially within the Veeam Data Cloud portfolio. These developments include expanded protection options for Microsoft SaaS environments, expanded safeguarding for both Microsoft 365 and Entra ID user identities, and new features for predictable, immutable offsite storage to help further guard against ransomware attacks. The company has also launched added support for Salesforce, widening the coverage of secure and recoverable enterprise cloud applications. Market position The Gartner Magic Quadrant is a widely referenced industry analysis which categorises technology providers into four quadrants based on their 'Ability to Execute' and 'Completeness of Vision.' Leaders occupy the highest positions across both axes, reflecting vendor capabilities and ongoing advancement in the field. Gartner analysts report that these distinctions are based on comprehensive, fact-based research and support organisations seeking to align strategic decisions about data protection with the particular needs of their business. Commenting on Veeam's continued placement, Anand Eswaran, Chief Executive Officer at Veeam, said, "Veeam's success is built on serving our customers' needs and supporting them as their technology needs evolve – from delivering the most complete end-to-end cyber resilience capabilities to giving them the freedom to choose where and how to store and use their data." "That commitment to innovation, which has been at the core of our company since its inception, continues today as the world moves to SaaS and as organisations are incorporating AI into their core business processes. Veeam is the one-stop shop for keeping critical data safe no matter what happens." Veeam presently counts over 550,000 customers globally, including nearly 72% of the Global 2000 companies, who rely on its services for data protection and recovery needs. Recent advancements The company has added protection for the identities managed through Microsoft's Entra ID as part of its Microsoft SaaS offering. This, coupled with enhancements in offsite storage, is intended to improve resilience to increasingly prevalent ransomware threats. There is also new support for Salesforce, which means a greater proportion of customer cloud applications are included within Veeam's protective umbrella, responding to increased demand for data security across diverse cloud-based platforms. Gartner Magic Quadrant background The Magic Quadrant is a recurring research tool used by organisations to assess technology vendors. According to Gartner, the reports "are a culmination of rigorous, fact-based research in specific markets, providing a wide-angle view of the relative positions of providers in markets where growth is high and provider differentiation is distinct." Providers are ranked in the quadrants of Leaders, Challengers, Visionaries, and Niche Players. Gartner emphasises that the Magic Quadrant results should not be interpreted as endorsements or recommendations for a specific vendor, but instead as a resource intended to support organisations as they review the changing data protection landscape and make purchasing decisions based on their individual requirements. Industry landscape The backup and data protection sector continues to evolve alongside new security challenges, particularly the growth in cyber threats such as ransomware and demands driven by artificial intelligence and SaaS adoption. Through its document, Gartner notes that the name and scope of the Magic Quadrant report has adapted to reflect these shifting industry priorities. It highlights the importance of robust research and considered decision making for technology and security leaders seeking to effectively safeguard business operations and data assets.

In terms of the details of the bumps, I am 100% focused on looking forward, so I'll leave it to our owner, Paul Tomlinson, to elaborate in the coming weeks." Spectrum's new leadership seeks to assure stakeholders of its strategic continuity, commitment to local operation and investment, and continued focus on staff and clients. Bennett made clear the company's ownership status and future plans, saying, "Regardless of what you may have heard, Spectrum is unequivocally not for sale. We are a proudly Kiwi-owned and operated company, and we are making significant investments in our future here in New Zealand. A key part of this investment is in our people, having met all our staff and clients over the last few weeks, I'm delighted that we are built on an incredibly talented, dedicated and hard-working foundation.
