Vijayawada: In a bizarre incident, a bus belonging to Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) was stolen in Nellore district on Wednesday.
Alerted by the APSRTC officials, the police intercepted the stolen vehicle and arrested the thief a few hours later.
The 'Palle Velugu' bus of APSRTC belonging to Atmakur depot had reached Nellore town from Atmakur on Tuesday night. After parking the vehicle at the bus stand, driver Jeelani went to the restroom.
On Wednesday morning, when the driver went to the bus stand to resume his duty, he was shocked to find the bus missing. He immediately informed the APSRTC officials, who, in turn, lodged a complaint with the police.
The police scanned the CCTV footage from different locations around the town. The stolen bus was captured on CCTV at the Bucchireddypalem toll gate. The police swung into action and intercepted the bus near Nellorepalem Circle, about 50 km from Nellore town and arrested the thief.
The thief was identified as B Krishna, of Kancherla village of Vidavalur mandal in the same district. The police were questioning him about the motive behind his action.
This is not the first such incident in the state.
In 2002, a man in Vizianagaram district stole a bus of the APSRTC to reach home.
The stolen bus belonging to the Palakonda depot of APSRTC was found in Kandisa village after several hours of search by the police along with Corporation officials.(IANS)

Hindu Munnani members detained for staging protest against construction of STP at cremation ground in Coimbatore

Over 150 members of Hindu Munnani were detained on Friday for protesting against the construction of a sewage treatment plant (STP) at the cremation ground in Chokkampudur, Coimbatore. The protesters assembled outside the Coimbatore Corporation office at Town Hall, opposing the project on the grounds that the site—located in a densely populated area and directly opposite a private school with over 1,000 students—was inappropriate for a sewage facility. S. Satish, a member of the outfit's state executive committee, said the Corporation continued the work despite petitions to the District Collector and civic officials. Alleging that human remains were exhumed from the site, he accused the Corporation of ignoring public sentiment. He also claimed similar activity at cremation grounds in Kallampalayam and Suganapuram, where sites were reportedly used for garbage segregation. 'Across the State, Hindu cremation grounds are being repurposed for civic projects,,' he alleged. They said the work was rushed despite objections and warned of further protests. The outfit has planned to approach the court, citing religious and emotional concerns over the exhumation. The police said the protest was held without permission, and those who had gathered were detained.

Principal District and Sessions Judge dismisses bail plea of six persons involved in property tax scam in Madurai

The Principal District and Sessions Judge, Madurai, dismissed the bail petitions filed by six persons said to have been involved in the property tax scam in Madurai Corporation. Judge S. Sivakadatcham dismissed the bail petitions filed by the then Assistant Commissioner of Madurai Corporation A. Rengarajan, temporary staff members R. Sathish (Technical Assistant) and S. Karthick (Data Entry Operator), and three others, N. Mohamad Noor, J. Saga Hussain and B. Rajesh Kumar, who were running shops near Madurai Corporation office. The Public Prosecutor submitted that the fraud came to light in September 2024 when the then Corporation commissioner found some irregularities in the records and lodged a police complaint. An audit team found that property taxes of 150 buildings had been reduced without following proper procedures and the review uncovered irregularities in the records of UTIS, an online property tax management platform. Bribes were accepted to lower taxes. Investigation revealed that Passwords and User IDs of Bill Collectors without sufficient knowledge in computers were used and taxes were reduced for these persons without the knowledge of the Bill Collectors, the Public Prosecutor submitted. Who else were involved in the commission of the offences were to be identified after investigation. Out of the 150 property owners, so far 80 persons were inquired and the remaining were yet to be inquired. On whose instructions the offences were committed was to be ascertained, the Public Prosecutor submitted and objected to the grant of bail to the petitioners. The petitioners submitted that they were not involved in the offence. The judge observed that it was contended by the prosecution that the revenue loss might extend to several crores, till date 15 persons were arrayed as accused, more than 70 building owners were yet to be inquired, Madurai Corporation employees were to be examined and the investigation was at a nascent stage. He also took into account that the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court had directed the Inspector-General of Police (South Zone) and the Madurai Commissioner of Police to constitute a Special Investigation Team, headed by a senior IPS officer, to conduct an investigation into the alleged scam. If the petitioners were released on bail, there was a chance of them tampering with the evidence, besides absconding, the judge said. The petitioners deserved no consideration for bail at this stage, he said and dismissed the petitions.
