Cork man accused of attempted murder in arson attack pleads guilty to other related charges

Irish Examiner03-06-2025
A facing the prospect of trial by judge and jury for attempted murder arising out of an arson attack on a house in Cork city on Christmas Day 2023 confessed to other related charges today.
Shane Casey, aged 32, of Shanowen, Rathcormac, Co Cork, was arraigned on three charges at the Central Criminal Court today and pleaded guilty to all three of them.
He did not plead guilty to another charge on the indictment — namely the attempted murder of Billy Murphy, a man in his 60s, owner of the house at Dyke Parade, Cork, where the arson was carried out. However, defence senior counsel Ray Boland conceded that the plea of guilty to certain charges was entered on the basis that the full facts of the case would be given at the sentencing hearing.
Mr Boland asked for free legal aid to be extended to include the preparation of a psychiatric report on Shane Casey. Ms Justice Eileen Creedon acceded to that application. The case was adjourned until October 6 when it is anticipated a date will be set for sentencing.
Detective Garda Brian Barron originally charged Casey with the attempted murder of Mr Murphy, but there was no plea to that charge. There was a plea of guilty to a charge of assault causing harm to Mr Murphy, production of an article, namely a blade, in the course of the assault, and finally causing criminal damage to the house and neighbouring properties with intent to endanger life.
Evidence
It was previously alleged when the case first came before the courts that the accused set fire to the house on Dyke Parade, Cork, just after 6pm on December 25, 2023, when four people were present in the house and that the accused man stood outside swinging a blade when the first person ran from the burning building, telling him, 'You are going to die here tonight.'
Referring to CCTV and other evidence, Det Garda Barron said: 'At 6.05pm, he exits and stands looking in the open front door at the fire taking hold. At 6.06pm, it is alleged that he closes the front door and attempts to barricade the front door from the outside, using a piece of timber to jam to the side and then under the door.
'It is alleged he takes a blade from his pocket and holds it out in front of him and waits outside. At 6.08pm, the front door bursts open and [one of the men] attempts to escape the now blazing house.
"It was alleged he said (to one injured party), 'My name is Shane Casey and you remember me from two days ago — you are going to die here tonight.''
It was further alleged that one woman had to be rescued from the roof and that it took six units of the fire service more than six hours to bring the fire under control and make the building safe. The fire caused thousands of euro in damage, the detective said.
Jane Hyland prosecution senior counsel said that victim impact statements would be prepared in advance of sentencing.
This case had been listed for trial by judge and jury at the Central Criminal Court on June 18 but it will now be removed from that list.

Senior garda charged with rape offences

High-ranking officer suspended from duty after long-running investigation into alleged sexual misconduct sees him appear at sitting of district court Figures show there are currently 94 members of the force suspended from duty A senior garda has been suspended from duty after appearing in court charged with a number of rape offences. He was arrested following a long-running investigation into alleged sexual offences led by specialist detectives. The garda, who has a legal right to anonymity due to the nature of the alleged offences, appeared before a sitting of a district court last month where he was formally charged. The senior garda faces three counts of rape against a female, which allegedly occurred on separate dates in the same year a number of years ago. The injured party in the case was known to him. One of the alleged offences is contrary to Section 4 of the Criminal Law (Rape) (Amendment) Act, 1990. Court records state that the other two charges relate to offences contrary to Section 48 Offences Against the Person Act, 1861 and Section 2 of the Criminal Law (Rape) Act, 1981 as amended by section 21 of the Criminal Law (Rape) (Amendment) Act, 1990. Figures show there are currently 94 members of the force suspended from duty News in 90 Seconds - Sunday, August 3rd He has also been suspended from duty by An Garda Síochána. His first court appearance was last month and he was remanded on bail. The senior officer is expected to appear in court again later this year. The legislation under which he is charged means he will face trial on indictment before the Central Criminal Court, which hears the most serious sexual offences. A Garda spokesperson said last night: 'As part of a Garda investigation into alleged sexual offences, a member of An Garda Síochána in Munster has been arrested and charged. The Garda is suspended.' The most recent figures available show that there are currently 94 members of An Garda Siochána suspended from duty. The figures, as of June 6, shows that these members have been suspended for a combined total of 89,534 days. They were released by Justice Minister Jim O'Callaghan following a parliamentary question by Sinn Fein TD Carol Nolan. These suspensions relate to a wide range of issues including theft, disclosure of information and assaults. Over a third of suspensions also relate to sexual assaults, driving while under the influence, and domestic violence. A large number of incidents which have resulted in a member of An Garda Síochána being removed from duty have also occurred while they were off-duty. The Policing and Community Safety Authority heard in May that around 55 gardaí were at that time also on 'non-public facing duties'.

Failed US actor jailed for Dublin rape had tried to present himself as a star

Kevin Yungman (32), who has an address in Florida, raped the 19-year-old Brazilian au pair at an Airbnb on Usher's Quay on June 4, 2018 A US actor and singer jailed for five years for raping a Brazilian woman in Dublin desperately tried to present himself as a star, despite failing to make it in the film and music industries. Kevin Yungman (32), who has an address in Florida, raped the 19-year-old Brazilian au pair at an Airbnb on Usher's Quay on June 4, 2018. The Central Criminal Court heard how he had placed his arms around the neck of the woman causing her to pass out before he raped her. The woman described in her victim impact statement that she had experienced panic attacks, mood swings, anxiety, suicidal thoughts, dysfunctional relationships and losing her faith in God, in the aftermath of the rape. Kevin Yungman News in 90 Seconds - Saturday, August 2 Yungman was arrested as he tried to board a flight out of Ireland after the rape and questioned by gardai before being released while a file was prepared for the Director of Public Prosecution who directed he be charged in 2020. He was eventually arrested in the US in August last year and extradited to Ireland. Yungman was born in Buenos Aires in Argentina but moved to the US as child and chased fame from an early age as an actor and singer. However, his acting career never really took off as his credits, according to his own IMDB page, include a small role in a Spanish language children's TV show Grachi, an uncredited role in Step Up 4 and a credit for reenactment scenes in a TV series about killer kids. He also bizarrely listed himself as playing the 'lead' in the 1999 animated film version of The King and I which was made when he was aged just six. He is not listed in the the actual credits of the film and appears to have added the entry himself to IMDB. Despite his lack of TV and film fame, Yungman was big into self-promotion on various websites including YouTube, Instagram and Facebook. Three years before carrying out the rape, he described himself as a '22 year old Natural Problem Solver, Networking Rockstar, Relentless Optimist, & Lean Mean Transformation Machine.' Writing about himself in the third person, he said: 'Kevin Yungman was born in Argentina where he began his singing 'career' at the age of 2. Since his childhood, he has always had an inclination towards the arts. Kevin could be consistently found asking his parents to take him to local productions, performing in school plays, and singing everyone in his house (and sometimes himself) to sleep.' He goes on to say he and his family moved to Utah in the US when he was seven. 'Not knowing much English was a struggle, but even though the language and customs changed, his desire for singing and acting remained strong,' Yungman wrote about himself. 'Any chance he could get to perform, he would take it. Just as he was beginning to get accustomed to everything, his family moved again. Landing in sunny Florida was an adventure in itself, beaches weren't exactly common in Utah.' He went on to say how he attended acting and singing classes and claimed to have received 'first place trophies in multiple national singing competitions'. He also said he guest starred in a touring Broadway show Cirque Dreams Jungle Fantasy when it was staged in Florida and claims to have performed for celebrities and political figures including the 'vice president of the United States'. He also claimed to have been 'part of multi-million dollar full length feature films' despite none being listed on his IMDB. Despite his acting and singing careers never really taking off, Yungman presented himself online as a star and bizarrely described himself living in Los Angeles 'where he is continuing to grow his performing career at an alarming rate'. At the same time he was making this claim he was also describing himself as a motivational speaker and said he considered himself 'one of the hottest and fastest growing speakers on the market'. He also described himself on websites as a successful entrepreneur. Despite his bold claims about his success in singing, acting, motivational speaking and business, he was also offering private singing lessons online or in person to make some cash. Ironically, the publicity hungry failed actor has now had more media coverage than he did in his entire acting and singing careers after being convicted of rape. The Central Criminal Court heard he first met the Brazilian woman in Paris three months previously when they both happened to be on a walking tour of the city. She was 19 at the time and had been working in Dublin. Yungman was 25 years old. They had never met before. They spent the day together, had wine and chocolate at the Eiffel Tower and returned to his accommodation where they had consensual sex. However, during this meeting Yungman had told the woman at one point to start breathing fast, take a deep breath and hold it in before he placed a hand on her neck causing her to pass out. The woman told him that she had been scared by it. They stayed in contact and agreed to meet again in Dublin the following June. They rented an AirBnB and again there was consensual sexual activity before Yungman raped the woman. He placed his arms around her neck and squeezed hard. She tried to keep his arms away from her but she could not move out. She later told gardaí she was not strong enough. She told gardaí that at that point she passed out. Yungman tried to turn her over and told her 'that's my girl, that's my girl' before he raped her. The woman told gardaí she could not cope with it and asked him to 'please stop' telling him 'my body cannot take it'. Yungman said he would give her a break and they could go back to it later.

Watch: Questions remain over US tariff exemptions

Questions remain over which areas are exempt from US tariffs on EU goods, RTÉ's Economics and Public Affairs Editor David Murphy has said. Speaking on RTÉ's One News programme, Mr Murphy said there is an awful lot of trade in terms of wine and spirits between the EU and the US and there was talk that those imports could be exempt from tariffs. However, any exemption for these products remains uncertain. In relation to pharmaceuticals, Mr Murphy said the US investigations into pharmaceuticals and semiconductors will need to play out before there is certainty surrounding tariffs on those products. "Thereafter, there is an expectation that there would be a tariff with a ceiling on that of 15%," he said regarding possible future tariffs on pharmaceutical imports. However, Mr Murphy stressed that the EU deal with the US was better than some others with Canada hit with 35% tariffs, India subject to a 25% rate and tariffs of 39% placed on Swiss imports to the US. Today had been set as the deadline for reaching a trade deal with the US, but following a breakthrough in talks last Sunday, an agreement was reached on a 15% levy on most EU exports to the US, expected to take effect on 7 August.
