GAA Palestine travels to Jordan after Irish tour is cancelled due to visa issues
GAA Palestine said its players and mentors have arrived in Jordan for a summer camp after their planned tour of Ireland was cancelled over visa denials. The group, which includes 33 Palestinian children and young teenagers, was scheduled to arrive in Dublin on Friday, however, they were denied entry by the Department of Justice. In a statement, GAA Palestine said despite the 'heartbreaking' decision to cancel the Irish tour, the group turned 'adversity into an opportunity for breakthrough'. They announced a 10-day summer camp in Amman, Jordan. READ MORE The group of 33 from the West Bank were to travel to Ireland this weekend, and lodged an appeal after their visas were rejected. However, they were forced to cancel as the appeal would not have been dealt with in time. GAA Palestine said hurling stars Conor Donohoe and Fergal Whitey will join the tour, along with former Waterford inter-county player Shane Casey. 'These inspiring players will travel to Amman on Saturday to lead the camp, bringing with them the vibrant energy, professionalism and rich traditions of Gaelic games,' GAA Palestine said in a statement. 'Today, we celebrate a moment of triumph — the young players and mentors arrived in Amman, greeted warmly by members of the GAA Palestine team. 'Their arrival marks a new chapter of hope and resilience for GAA Palestine, who continue to defy barriers and inspire us all. 'The summer camp promises an unforgettable experience, blending sport with culture and adventure. Participants will explore the historic Amman Citadel, visit the bustling Souk Mango, and enjoy exhilarating ziplining, buggy rides, and climbing adventures at Forest Park. 'They will watch the All-Ireland hurling final on a big screen, connect with local landmarks like the King Abdullah I Mosque, and indulge in fun-filled days at amusement and water parks. Most importantly, they will learn and grow through coaching sessions led by our committed volunteers and coaches. 'While this journey may not replicate the Irish welcome they initially envisioned, it embodies the very spirit of resilience and hope — a reminder that even in the face of disappointment, community and determination can forge new paths toward brighter futures. 'This remarkable feat would not have been possible without the generosity of donors, the tireless efforts of volunteers, our inter-county players, and the unwavering dedication of all members of GAA Palestine. 'Your support fuels their dreams and proves that together, we can overcome any obstacle.'

Man jailed after throwing ashes of woman's late partner across room and threatening to kill her
A man who punched a woman in the face, threatened to kill her, and threw an urn containing the ashes of her late partner across a room has been jailed for 27 months. Shane Casey (32) previously pleaded guilty to threatening to kill the woman at Broad Lane, Great William O'Brien Street in Blackpool, Cork city, on June 14th, 2023. The plea was entered on a full facts basis. Advertisement Garda Michael Abernathy told Cork Circuit Criminal Court that Mr Casey turned up at the house of the woman completely uninvited and in an intoxicated state. Garda Abernathy said that Mr Casey punched the woman four times, causing soft tissue damage to her face. 'He (Casey) struck her with his fist. He ran towards the kitchen and said that he was going to 'finish her (the victim) off.' She believed he was going to get a knife. He followed her and demanded money from her. She gave him €50. He threatened and abused her. He picked up an urn containing the ashes of her ex-partner and threw them across the room.' Advertisement Garda Abernathy said that a neighbour went to the assistance of the woman. Mr Casey was arrested and detained for questioning by gardaí. Mr Casey, formerly of Great William O'Brien Street in Blackpool, Cork, has 53 previous convictions. Defence barrister Jessica Kelleher, BL, said that the plea in the case saved the victim from having to give evidence. She indicated that her client was remorseful for his actions. Judge Helen Boyle also heard that the accused has extremely poor mental health and suffers from psychosis. Advertisement Judge Boyle said that the woman had suffered an 'invasion' of her home by the accused, who then physically assaulted and threatened to kill her. 'A home should be a place of safety. Cork man accused of attempted murder in arson attack pleads guilty to other related charges
A facing the prospect of trial by judge and jury for attempted murder arising out of an arson attack on a house in Cork city on Christmas Day 2023 confessed to other related charges today. Shane Casey, aged 32, of Shanowen, Rathcormac, Co Cork, was arraigned on three charges at the Central Criminal Court today and pleaded guilty to all three of them. He did not plead guilty to another charge on the indictment — namely the attempted murder of Billy Murphy, a man in his 60s, owner of the house at Dyke Parade, Cork, where the arson was carried out. However, defence senior counsel Ray Boland conceded that the plea of guilty to certain charges was entered on the basis that the full facts of the case would be given at the sentencing hearing. Mr Boland asked for free legal aid to be extended to include the preparation of a psychiatric report on Shane Casey. Ms Justice Eileen Creedon acceded to that application. The case was adjourned until October 6 when it is anticipated a date will be set for sentencing. Detective Garda Brian Barron originally charged Casey with the attempted murder of Mr Murphy, but there was no plea to that charge. There was a plea of guilty to a charge of assault causing harm to Mr Murphy, production of an article, namely a blade, in the course of the assault, and finally causing criminal damage to the house and neighbouring properties with intent to endanger life. Evidence It was previously alleged when the case first came before the courts that the accused set fire to the house on Dyke Parade, Cork, just after 6pm on December 25, 2023, when four people were present in the house and that the accused man stood outside swinging a blade when the first person ran from the burning building, telling him, 'You are going to die here tonight.' Referring to CCTV and other evidence, Det Garda Barron said: 'At 6.05pm, he exits and stands looking in the open front door at the fire taking hold. At 6.06pm, it is alleged that he closes the front door and attempts to barricade the front door from the outside, using a piece of timber to jam to the side and then under the door. 'It is alleged he takes a blade from his pocket and holds it out in front of him and waits outside. At 6.08pm, the front door bursts open and [one of the men] attempts to escape the now blazing house. "It was alleged he said (to one injured party), 'My name is Shane Casey and you remember me from two days ago — you are going to die here tonight.'' It was further alleged that one woman had to be rescued from the roof and that it took six units of the fire service more than six hours to bring the fire under control and make the building safe. The fire caused thousands of euro in damage, the detective said. Jane Hyland prosecution senior counsel said that victim impact statements would be prepared in advance of sentencing. This case had been listed for trial by judge and jury at the Central Criminal Court on June 18 but it will now be removed from that list.

Goats a catalyst for change in Co. Carlow
A small herd of Old Irish Goats attracted almost 2,000 visitors from across Carlow in the sunshine recently as people of all ages learned about the county council's urban pollinator foraging initiative and a little about fire safety on the cusp of wildfire season. The Old Irish Goats – Ireland's indigenous landrace breed now only found in remote mountain ranges, roaming in feral herds – will return to Co. Carlow in September. On that occasion, the council will work with some local retired farmers to demonstrate how to make cocks of hay, a scene that has not been seen in Carlow for many years, according to Shane Casey, environmental officer with Carlow County Council. In 2023, the Carlow local authority adopted a green infrastructure strategy, which includes the policy that no pollinator in Co. Carlow's towns and villages will have to travel more than 200m to find a food source. Casey said: 'To do this, we developed a unique urban pollinator foraging network map in Carlow town. This has since been advocated by the All-Ireland Pollinator Plan as an example of best practice for prioritising local resources.' The Old Irish Goats hitching a lift on the fire brigade 'In 2024, we commissioned Flynn Furney to contact all community and residents' groups in the eight largest towns and villages in Carlow: Carlow town; Tullow; Bagenalstown; Leighlinbridge; Hacketstown; Borris; Ballon; and Rathvilly. 'We asked them to map any community-managed open spaces, where there was a desire to do more for pollinators. Over 60ac in total were mapped and all individual sites were a minimum size of 0.5 ac, and were being mown regularly. 'The focus of the next stage is to encourage a change in management, to move away from regular mowing, saving time and labour and reducing carbon footprint, and towards long flowering meadows in these areas, significantly improving conditions for biodiversity and enabling enhanced ecosystem services,' Casey said. The environmental officer went on to explain the important role of the Old Irish Goats in bringing about this different approach. 'The goats are a catalyst for this change in management, rather than the sole solution, and we will be partnering with the Co Carlow Environmental Network in September to offer practical help to local residents who want to make such changes.. 'This will involve us helping to 'cut and lift' these spaces, limited to any green space which is a minimum of 0.5 ac in size, where a mown boundary strip is maintained throughout the summer, and where signs – which we will provide – are erected and maintained,' he said. It is anticipated that the 'lifted' vegetation will be used as part of a cultural event to demonstrate the skill of making cocks of hay. The goats stayed overnight in the parochial house in Bagenalstown. They then visited the green adjacent to Leighlinbridge church, and also took in the green areas of Brooklawns, Burrindale and Sherwood, before finishing up at Hacketstown fire station. Their shepherd, Melissa Jeuken, was on hand throughout the week, along with Casey, to deliver educational talks on pollinators, land management for pollinators, and the goats themselves, the subject of Casey's agricultural science undergraduate thesis. According to Casey: 'Also joining us throughout the week was our fire service crew, delivering fire safety awareness as we enter wildfire season. 'These were the same goats as seen on Howth Head, controlling gorse and scrub to manage wildfire impacts, an issue all too prevalent in Carlow as well. 'We also found time during the week to create a Carlow version of the classic 'Three Billy Goats Gruff' performed by local woman, Wibbly Wobbly Wendy, and posted on Facebook by the National Heritage Council.'
