Ludhiana Couple Consume Poison, Die After Alleged Harassment By Bank Officials Over Loan Dues
A couple from Ludhiana, Punjab, allegedly died by suicide after facing repeated harassment from private bank recovery agents over loan repayment. The couple, Jasbir Singh (60) and his wife Kuldeep Kaur (59), reportedly consumed poison inside their shop located beneath their hosiery factory in Gandhi Nagar Market.
According to their son, they had taken a loan against property (LAP) of around Rs 2.35 crore from a private bank to run their business. Despite paying 55 EMIs regularly, one delayed payment this month allegedly led to pressure and threats from the bank's recovery team.
The son claimed his parents received over 200 calls a day. Recovery agents also followed and confronted them regularly. Last week, officials allegedly came to their home in Harbanspura and misbehaved with them. When their son intervened, he too was allegedly threatened.
On Thursday morning, their son found them unconscious in the shop. Before losing consciousness, they told him they had consumed poison. He rushed them to DMC Hospital, but both were declared dead.
Police confirmed that a suicide note was found at the scene, in which the couple accused bank officials of issuing threats and subjecting them to mental harassment. The note also described abusive behaviour and warned that their home would be taken over.

"I Love You": Estranged Wife Hasin Jahan Writes To Mohammed Shami. Instagram Post Turns Out To Be A Rant
From the time Indian cricket team star Mohammed Shami was asked by the Calcutta High Court to pay Rs 4 lakh per month as maintenance expenses to Hasin Jahan and daughter Aaira, the cricketer has come under verbal attack from his estranged wife. According to the order, Hasin Jahan will have to be paid Rs 1.50 lakh per month while the daughter will get Rs 2.50 lakh per month. This amount will be levied from a back date of seven years. The lower court has been ordered to dispose the case within six months. The case was filed under 'Protection Of Women From Domestic Violence' act. In an Instagram post on Friday, Hasin Jahan tagged Mohammed Shami, and used strong words like "greedy, mean-minded" against the cricketer. Following is the Instagram post that Hasin Jahan shared, that started with the line: "I love you so much jaanu." However, what followed was a rant. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Haseen Jahan (@hasinjahanofficial) Earlier, Hasin Jahan had called Shami a person with 'wrong mindset'. "A person with a wrong mindset, who has crime in his mind, and who pushes his own family, wife and children towards trouble, and who was never anything and suddenly a lot happens, these people get arrogance and attitude. They develop such an attitude that they themselves do not know which path they are standing on, what they are doing and why they are doing it. Right now, he (Shami) is completely consumed by pride. The day that pride fades, he will remember his wife, his daughter, and all his wrongdoings. As of now, because of that arrogance, he has made no effort to contact me or our daughter. In fact, the last time he met our daughter was only because of Hon'ble Justice Tirthankar Ghosh's fear," said Hasin. Jahan had moved the high court against a district sessions court's order directing the cricketer to pay Rs 50,000 to his wife and Rs 80,000 to her daughter in 2023. "In my considered opinion, a sum of Rs 1,50,000 per month to the petitioner no.1 (wife) and Rs 2,50,000 to her daughter would be just fair and reasonable to ensure financial stability for both the petitioners, till disposal of the main application," the order passed by Justice Ajoy Kumar Mukherjee on Tuesday stated. "However as regards petitioner's child the husband /opposite party No 2 will always be at liberty to voluntarily assist her with educational and/or other reasonable expenses, over and above the aforesaid amount," the order added.

Contraband worth Rs 1.44 crore seized in Mizoram, 11 people held
Aizawl: Assam Rifles and other security forces have seized contraband worth over Rs 1.44 crore and arrested 11 drug peddlers, including two women, in Mizoram during the past 24 hours, officials said on Saturday. An official said that acting on specific intelligence inputs regarding the movement of contraband foreign cigars in Siaha District, an Area Domination Patrol (ADP) was launched by Assam Rifles along with Mizoram police at Tlangpuikawn areas. The security personnel intercepted four vehicles and recovered 83 cartons of foreign Cigars (Burmese Cheroot) worth Rs 62.25 lakh from the vehicles. Four people aged between 20 to 27 years were arrested in this connection. In another incident, the Assam Rifles, along with officials of the Excise and Narcotics Department, established a check post at New Dawn to Hnahthial road in Siaha District and intercepted four suspects. Upon thorough search, heroin weighing 109.08 grams valued at Rs 81.81 lakh was recovered from the four drug traffickers, including two women. In the third operation, the Assam Rifles and the state police jointly arrested three individuals from the Chawngte areas of Lunglei District and recovered 373 packets, containing approximately 124 litres of locally made alcohol worth Rs 93,250. All 11 smugglers and the seized drugs and contraband were handed over to the police for undertaking legal action. The security officials suspect that all the contraband was smuggled from Myanmar. The Siaha District has an unfenced border with Myanmar, while the Lunglei District shares a border with Bangladesh. Myanmar's Chin state is a hub for smuggling of varied drugs, exotic wildlife animals and many other contraband through six Mizoram districts -- Champhai, Siaha, Lawngtlai, Hnahthial, Saitual and Serchhip. Mizoram shares 510 km and 318 km of unfenced border with Myanmar and Bangladesh, respectively.

Sebi probe in Jane Street not over, will focus on other indices, exchanges, patterns
The sources, however, did not give any timeline on how long would the investigation take, and added that 'scope (of investigation) is quite large'. Stating that Sebi has only gone into 18 days of prima facie Banknifty and three days of Nifty index manipulations on expiry days till now, the sources said the probe will now focus on other expiry days, other indices including trades on other exchanges and other potential patterns. Mumbai, Jul 4 (PTI) Capital markets regulator Sebi's investigations into the Jane Street matter are set to continue even after the interim order, sources said on Friday. In an order released in the early hours of Friday, the market regulator has found Jane Street, a New York-based hedge fund, guilty of manipulating the indices by taking bets in the cash, and, futures and options markets simultaneously for making handsome gains. It has suspended the hedge fund from accessing the market and impounded over Rs 4,843 crore in gains. The probe has found that JS made a profit of Rs 36,671 crore on a net basis during the probe period from January 2023-May 2025. The Sebi sources seemed to be pitching for avoiding a reaction where the revelations lead to more regulations and instead pitched for better enforcement. 'Better enforcement of existing regulations can in fact pave the way for optimal regulation. On the flip side, more regulations cannot make up for poor enforcement,' they said. The regulator will continue to monitor the futures and options space from the perspective of ensuring investor protection, market stability, and support for sustained capital formation, the sources said. Sebi actions on the derivatives space following studies pointing to higher losses suffered by retail investors have 'somewhat moderated' retail activity on expiry days, 90 per cent of the trades continue to lead to losses, they said. 'There appears to be still too much of concentration in short-term expiries and short-term trading. Extending maturities and nudging more long-term trading, hedging, and investments would be ideal for our ecosystem,' they said. Even though the stocks of brokerages like Nuvama and Angel One, and also the equity bourse BSE witnessed an impact on Friday, the sources said they do not expect any major impact of this enforcement action. They explained that the revised rules set in recently on the delta-based (future equivalent) limits are now in place in index options to curtail excessive risk taking without impacting regular participants. 'In the long run, the growth in market confidence, and a free and fair market, should aid responsible investing and capital formation,' they said. Ahead of what is expected to be a protracted legal tussle, the Sebi sources also made it clear that every user of an algorithm is responsible for the output of the algo.
