Volkswagen ID.4 Review 2025
The crossover sibling of the ID.3 hatch, to absolutely no one's surprise. It's based on Volkswagen's designed-for-electric platform known as MEB, and it's available in rear- or all-wheel drive along with 52kWh or 77kWh battery variants. There's also a performance version called the ID.4 GTX, which gets a 79kWh battery. A GTI or R for the electric age? We'll see about that.
Rivals are many. They include the ID.5 (essentially an ID.4 with a coupe roofline), Skoda Enyaq (and its coupe sibling) and Audi Q4 e-tron (and its Sportback sibling), all of which are closely related, sit on the same platform, and come from the VW Group megacorp alone.

There's also the likes of the BMW iX3, Ford Mustang Mach-E, Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia EV6 and Tesla Model Y. What's the range like?
Entry-level ID.4s offer up to 221 miles of range with that smaller battery, mid-range models up to 339 miles courtesy of the bigger battery, while adding four-wheel drive into the mix means range takes a small hit. The range-topping all-wheel drive GTX (see below) claims up to 321 miles.

But. And it's quite a big but. The entry-level Skoda Enyaq supplies more range across the board... and is cheaper. Awkward.

Look past that and you'll find the ID.4 a comfortable, efficient and uncomplicated family cruiser. But it's also rather bland to drive. Does that matter in a family SUV? Arguably not, but the GTX doesn't add much to the picture either. Head over to the Driving tab for the full lowdown.
How big is it?
Think Tiguan outside but bigger inside. The wheelbase is actually the same as an ID.3, but sitting more upright means a sense of more legroom. Overall it's about 300mm longer than the ID.3, so the boot's a lot bigger.
The cabin cleaves to the minimalist aesthetic of many EVs, although that's not necessarily a good thing. It also adopts the all-touch interface of the ID.3, which definitely isn't a good thing. And no, the touchy-slidey steering wheel buttons and main dash controls (which do at least light up now) aren't getting any less infuriating. How much does it cost?
Prices for the smaller batteried variant start from £39,590, the bigger battery from £44,400, all-wheel drive ups that to £46,120, and the AWD GTX range-topper is £52,245. Full details over on the Buying tab.

What's the verdict?

Volkswagen missed the mark with the launch of the ID.4, with the overall experience let down by a cabin that's infuriating to operate. Recent updates have fixed most of the woes, meaning it's now a perfectly adequate family pod.
The smooth, silent driving experience demands nothing of you (though won't appeal to you if you have even the slightest interest in driving enjoyment), it has a roomy cabin with loads of clever storage spaces, and it's pretty efficient too.
But the bigger problem lies from within in the shape of the Skoda Enyaq, which is cheaper, has a more practical cabin, and goes further on a charge too. If it's the cool factor you're after, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6 have it outflanked as well. There's nothing that the ID.4 is best at. Oh.

Hamilton hails 'world class' Ferrari performance
SPIELBERG, Austria, June 28 (Reuters) - Lewis Hamilton hailed a 'world class' performance by Ferrari in Austrian Grand Prix qualifying on Saturday after Charles Leclerc took second place on the starting grid and he followed up in fourth. The session equalled Ferrari's best of the season in Monaco, even if Leclerc was still more than half a second slower than McLaren's pole-sitter Lando Norris. McLaren's championship leader Oscar Piastri will start third. "It's a fantastic result. The team have worked really hard back at the factory to bring us a new floor this weekend," seven-times world champion Hamilton, who joined Ferrari this season from Mercedes, told Sky Sports television. "My last lap wasn't perfect. I think if I'd finished it, I would have been second, so there are lots of positives to take out from that session. "Also, I think it's been the best day operationally, particularly through qualifying. How the team operated. Just timings, the information we're getting in terms of traffic and positioning on track, I think was really the best. It was proper world class." Ferrari have yet to win a grand prix this season, although Hamilton won a sprint race in China in March, and the pressure has been mounting on team boss Fred Vasseur as their hopes of a first title since 2008 recede. Hamilton has yet to finish higher than fourth in a regular grand prix for Ferrari and has now gone 12 races without a podium. The team, runners-up last year, are now third overall and behind McLaren and Mercedes. "Ultimately we continue to pull together and protect each other and block out all the noise, and just keep our heads down," said Hamilton. "It's an incredible team. I'm working with Fred, we're working to put all the pieces of the puzzle in the right place, but step by step. It can't be done in one go. "We've just got to keep working on it but I'm really happy with the progress we are making."

Stella proud of Norris after 'best qualifying of the year'
SPIELBERG, Austria, June 28 (Reuters) - McLaren team boss Andrea Stella said he was proud of Lando Norris's performance after the Briton took a dominant pole position in Austria in what he called his best qualifying of the year. Norris led every phase, going fastest in Friday and Saturday practice, a decisive response to a poor qualifying in Canada and his collision with championship-leading teammate Oscar Piastri in that race two weeks ago. That incident, which he accepted blame for, left Norris 22 points behind Piastri. "Even in Canada, after reviewing the weekend with Lando and his engineers, we always said the speed was there," Stella told Sky Sports television. "When he had the little contact with the wall in qualifying, he was on track for a pole position. And in the race, he was one of the fastest, if not the fastest car. The speed was always there. We needed to polish the execution. "I'm really proud of Lando today. Not only he scored a pole position, but it's a dominant pole position, a pretty remarkable lap time." Norris was more than half a second faster than his closest rival, Ferrari's Charles Leclerc, on the shortest lap of the season. The Briton said the upgraded car felt strong and quick. Qualifying, a strong point last year, has become more of a problem this season, but Norris seemed to have rectified some of the issues. "It was easily my best qualifying of the year from a delivery point of view from every single lap I did. I still made a couple of mistakes here and there, but none that cost me a lap or anything," he said. "I think on deliveries, consistency and of course putting it in when it counts in Q3 (it) was easily the best lap I've done for this whole season, probably even better than Monaco, honestly. "Maybe not as exciting a lap as Monaco, but definitely a better put-together lap than I did there." Norris won from pole in Monaco, with the fastest lap, as he did in the Australian season-opener. "It shows that the feelings I've been requiring, the feelings that I've not been getting as easily, when they are more my way and more where I want them to be, I can put in better performances and have days like today," he said.
