Kian Meng savours his first steps into world of coaching
Kian Meng, who retired in March after his final outing at the All-England with partner Lai Pei Jing, had initially planned to focus on product sales and reviews on online platforms.
He was hesitant to enter the coaching scene due to the stiff competition and the saturated landscape of badminton academies in Malaysia.
But an unexpected opportunity came his way when he was invited to join Badminton England as a guest coach.
For the 2022 Commonwealth Games bronze medallist, the offer was a golden opportunity to broaden his horizons and chart a new path following his retirement as a player.
'Actually, I see this as a great opportunity for me to learn. I've been with the England camp since last month after being invited to serve as a guest coach for a month.
'But now I've been assigned to accompany the players to several scheduled tournaments, and I feel this is a valuable experience for me," said Kian Meng when contacted on Sunday (July 27).
Kian Meng is currently working with mixed doubles pair Callum Hemming and Estelle Van Leeuwen, who are set to compete at the Macau Open starting on Tuesday. The duo will take on China's Hong Yili-Huang Kexin in the opening round.
This week in Changzhou, Hemming-Van Leeuwen were knocked out in the first round by Denmark's Mads Vestergaard and Christine Busch.
Kian Meng is also coaching the world No. 14 men's doubles pair Ben Lane-Sean Vendy. He is expected to remain with the England team until the China Masters in September.
Kian Meng is not the first Malaysian to lend his expertise to Badminton England. The national body had previously enlisted former internationals Koo Kien Keat and Datuk Cheah Soon Kit as guest coaches to help develop their players.

"We haven't had any conversation around the combination for the last test," Gambhir said. "No decision has been made on whether Jasprit Bumrah will play or not. Ultimately, whoever plays, they will try and do the job for the country." India captain Shubman Gill suggested it might be left up to Bumrah to make the call. "If he feels like he's fully fit and available for us, I think it would be a great deal for us," Gill told the BBC. India went into the fourth test with a depleted bowling attack having rested the injured pace duo of Akash Deep (groin) and Arshdeep Singh (hand). Malaysia captures third spot at Genting World Lion Dance Championship

The championship saw nine teams from six countries and territories - Malaysia, Singapore, Japan, Myanmar, China and Taiwan - vie for the championship title in the final. Malaysia, through the maiden participation of the Petaling Jaya Catholic High School Alumni Association Dragon and Lion Dance Troupe, earned 9.59 points to be placed third and took home USD6,000 cash, a trophy and medals presented by Transport Minister Anthony Loke. Michael Oh Head, one of the troupe's lion dancers, said that although there was some pressure representing Malaysia, the team gave their best performance. 'We will continue to train until we achieve better results and improved performances. We also hope to be given more opportunities to represent Malaysia and achieve success, thus bringing glory to the country,' he told Bernama after the prize-giving ceremony. Two other Malaysian teams - Kwong Ngai Lion Dance and Malaysia Xuan Long Dragon and Lion Dance Rawang Selangor - also made it to the final. The Kwong Ngai Lion Dance troupe finished seventh with 8.89 points, while the team from Rawang had to withdraw after one of its members sustained a leg injury. Malaysian Lion Dance Association advisor Siow Ho Phiew expressed his pride and satisfaction with the national teams' achievements, while describing the success of the three Malaysian teams reaching the final as a significant accomplishment that elevated the country's reputation on the international stage. 'Yes, I am satisfied with the performances of the Malaysian teams today. When it comes to major championships, we must work hard and compete in Genting to become world champions or succeed in other competitions,' he said. The Genting championship saw the Singapore B Team, represented by Yi Mei Athletic Association, crowned champion with 9.78 points while their counterparts, Singapore A, also represented by the same association, finished second with 9.66 points. The two teams took home USD18,000 and USD10,000 respectively, along with trophies and medals. Resorts World Genting Sales, Marketing and Public Relations executive vice-president Spencer Lee said this year's edition featured a significant difference with the creative use of props and storytelling elements, turning lion dance into not only a cultural performance but also a high-stamina sport. 'We hope that one day lion dance can become an international sports event, (and featured) in the SEA Games, Asian Games or the Olympics,' he said.
