PETALING JAYA: There was a familiar face making waves at the China Open in Changzhou last week as former mixed doubles shuttler Tan Kian Meng took his first steps into the world of coaching. Kian Meng, who retired in March after his final outing at the All-England with partner Lai Pei Jing, had initially planned to focus on product sales and reviews on online platforms. He was hesitant to enter the coaching scene due to the stiff competition and the saturated badminton academy landscape in Malaysia. But an unexpected opportunity came his way when he was invited to join Badminton England as a guest coach. For the 2022 Commonwealth Games bronze medallist, the offer was a golden opportunity to broaden his horizons and chart a new path following his retirement as a player. 'Actually, I see this as a great opportunity for me to learn. I've been with the England camp since last month after being invited to serve as a guest coach for a month. 'But now I've been assigned to accompany the players to several scheduled tournaments, and I feel this is a valuable experience for me,' said Kian Meng when contacted. Kian Meng is currently working with mixed doubles pair Callum Hemming and Estelle Van Leeuwen, who are set to compete at the Macau Open this week. The duo will take on China's Hong Yili-Huang Kexin in the opening round. Last week in Changzhou, Hemming-Van Leeuwen were knocked out in the first round by Denmark's Mads Vestergaard and Christine Busch. Kian Meng is also coaching the world No. 14 men's doubles pair Ben Lane-Sean Vendy. He is expected to remain with the England team until the China Masters in September. Kian Meng is not the first Malaysian to lend his expertise to Badminton England. The national body had previously enlisted former internationals Koo Kien Keat and Datuk Cheah Soon Kit as guest coaches to help develop their players.

Tang Jie-Ee Wei's preparations for the Paris showpiece took a hit after they went down to world No. 9 home pair Guo Xinwa-Chen Fanghui 19-21, 15-21 in the China Open quarter-finals at the Olympic Sports Center Gymnasium in Changzhou yesterday. The Malaysians had never lost to the reigning All-England champions before this, coming out on top in both their previous meetings in the China Masters and Hong Kong Open last year, but could not replicate their past performances and ended up losing in 43 minutes. Tang Jie admitted after the disappointing defeat that he and Ee Wei had work to do ahead of the world meet. 'Today (yesterday), our quality when returning our opponent's serve was not good enough. They got many points due to this. Other than that, we did quite well,' said Tang Jie in a post-match interview with the Badminton World Federation (BWF). 'We also need to learn how to maintain our focus during long rallies. This is very important for us.' Ee Wei said: 'We made a lot of mistakes when we received the shuttle. 'We need to train more and reduce our mistakes. We will go back and discuss with our coach (on what we need to work on).' Overall, Tang Jie-Ee Wei have had a frustrating year after not reaching any finals so far. The duo were stopped in the semi-finals four times in the Opens in Malaysia, India, Indonesia and last week in Japan. Tang Jie-Ee Wei also split at the end of March due to a strained relationship before resolving their differences quickly and reuniting less than a month later. The pair have an opportunity to do better when they compete next in the Macau Open which starts next Tuesday. A good showing in the World Tour Super 300 tourney where Tang Jie-Ee Wei are the top seeds, will boost their confidence ahead of the world meet.

Tang Jie-Ee Wei bow out of China Open in quarter-finals
PETALING JAYA: Mixed doubles shuttlers Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei's campaign in the China Open came to a disappointing end in the quarter-finals after they went down to homesters Guo Xinwa-Chen Fanghui. Tang Jie-Ee Wei had never lost to the world No. 9 pair and All-England champions before this, winning both their previous meetings in the China Masters and Hong Kong Open last year but could not replicate their past performances and lost out 19-21, 15-21 in 43 minutes at the Olympic Sports Center Gymnasium in Changzhou on Friday (July 25). Malaysia's challenge in the mixed doubles in the competition is over after the world No. 4 duo's defeat.
