Chin Unsuk-led music festival opens with two emerging artists at forefront
TONGYEONG, South Gyeongsang Province — The Tongyeong International Music Festival, founded in 2002 to commemorate the late composer Isang Yun, opened Friday in the Tongyeong, South Gyeongsang Province, along the southern coast as wildfires rage on near the city and political turmoil gripped the country.
The annual classical music festival typically includes a slate of fringe performances in smaller or alternative venues across Tongyeong. However, this weekend's events have been postponed due to a major wildfire in neighboring Sancheong County — the birthplace of Isang Yun. The wildfires began March 21 and were still causing extensive damage in the region as of Friday afternoon.
Renowned composer Chin Unsuk, now in her fourth year as the festival's artistic director, emphasized, "Many people are suffering due to the wildfire and both domestic and international affairs remain highly complex. With a sense of humility, we plan to carry out the festival."
Explaining the theme 'Journey Inwards,' Chin — recipient of the 2024 Ernst von Siemens Music Prize and the 2025 International Classical Music Award for Contemporary Music — said, 'In a time when political and economic conflicts are erupting around the world, and everyone is having to endure so much, perhaps listening to music — even if only for a moment — can be a chance to take an inner journey and rediscover something within ourselves.'
Running through April 6, the festival places two rising stars at its center: South Korean pianist Lim Yunchan and Spanish cellist Pablo Ferrandez, both serving as artists-in-residence.
'Even before I took the directorship, many musicians who had been to TIMF recommended it to their fellow artists,' Chin had remarked three years ago, her first year in the role, adding, 'TIMF is perhaps more recognized outside Korea.'
While the festival has long been a destination for classical music enthusiasts in Korea, it is drawing broader public attention this year thanks in large part to the soaring popularity of Lim Yunchan, the 20-year-old pianist who became a global sensation after winning the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in 2022.
Tickets for the opening concert — featuring Lim with the TIMF Orchestra under the baton of conductor Fabien Gabel — and Lim's solo recital sold out within one minute and 58 seconds, respectively.
'After Isang Yun's music, I believe my mission is to support and foster young musicians from Korea,' Chin said. 'That's why I invited artists like Yang In-mo and Kim Sun-wook in previous years. Thankfully, Lim Yunchan, who considers Tongyeong a place that feels like home, was available to join this year.'
Lim shares a deep connection with the festival: In 2019, he became the youngest winner of Korea's Isangyun Competition, which is organized by the Tongyeong International Music Foundation.
'Cellist Pablo Ferrandez is an emerging artist who is rapidly gaining recognition,' Chin added. 'We invited him this year, and I have high expectations for his performance.'
This year marks both the 30th anniversary of Isang Yun's passing and the 100th anniversary of Pierre Boulez's birth, with major works by the two composers featured in the festival program. Composer-in-residence Hans Abrahamsen's works will be also introduced.

Yoon Ga-eun's 'The World of Love' selected for Toronto's Platform competition
Acclaimed director 'The World of Us' breaks new ground with her third feature about a teenager's emotional journey South Korean director Yoon Ga-eun's latest feature "The World of Love" has been selected for the Platform section at the 50th Toronto International Film Festival, the film's local distributor Barunson E&A said Wednesday. The selection marks the first time a Korean film has competed in the festival's prestigious auteur-focused competition. The Platform section, founded in 2015, primarily showcases distinctive works from early-to-mid-career filmmakers. It serves as the festival's only competitive program. Past selections have launched major careers, including Barry Jenkins' "Moonlight," which went on to win the Academy Award for Best Picture, William Oldroyd's "Lady Macbeth," and Pablo Larrain's "Jackie." "The World of Love" will have its world premiere at the festival, which runs Sept. 4-14. The film follows Joo-in, a 17-year-old high school student (played by Seo Su-bin, in her debut role), whose first explorations of love lead her down an unforeseen path. The cast also includes Jang Hye-jin ("Parasite," "Crash Landing on You"). The film qualifies for the Platform Award, which comes with a 20,000 Canadian dollar prize. It is also eligible for the festival's People's Choice Award and the newly established International People's Choice Award, both determined by audience voting. Yoon has built a reputation for her nuanced portrayals of children and adolescents. Her 2016 debut feature "The World of Us" premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival and earned widespread acclaim for its delicate depiction of elementary school friendship. Her follow-up "The House of Us" (2019) continued her exploration of childhood perspectives. Director Bong Joon-ho praised Yoon as one of three masters alongside Abbas Kiarostami and Hirokazu Kore-eda in bringing child actors to life on screen. He later named her the only Korean director on Sight & Sound's list of "20 filmmakers to watch." Following its world premiere at Toronto, "The World of Love" will hit Korean theaters later this year.

CJ ENM establishes first Korean entertainment subsidiary in Saudi Arabia
Entertainment conglomerate taps Middle East and North Africa as a new growth engine CJ ENM, a leading South Korean entertainment company, announced Wednesday the launch of its wholly-owned subsidiary, CJ ENM Middle East, in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia — becoming the first Korean entertainment firm to set up a local branch in the country. CJ ENM said it is positioning the Middle East and North Africa region as a strategic growth engine, aiming to integrate its expertise in content creation, production and distribution with the region's rapidly expanding entertainment infrastructure and cultural demand. Through this subsidiary, CJ ENM said it plans to pursue wide-ranging business collaborations across music, television, film, live entertainment and both scripted and unscripted content. This includes the development of audition programs based on CJ ENM's artist discovery initiatives in partnership with local studios. 'The MENA region, and Saudi Arabia in particular, presents unprecedented potential for cultural and commercial collaboration,' said Kim Hyun-soo, general manager of CJ ENM Middle East, via a press release. 'To build strong local networks and ensure stable operations, we are partnering with Sela — Saudi Arabia's leading live events and experiences company — to expand the influence of K-culture.' Since signing a strategic partnership in December 2024 to foster the development of the cultural business landscape, the company said it has been holding ongoing discussions with Sela to develop joint initiatives. Leveraging Sela's expertise in large-scale sports, music, and cultural events, CJ ENM's Saudi subsidiary will broaden collaboration with local stakeholders. CJ ENM's establishment of CJ ENM Middle East comes as the company aims to build ties with the MENA region. The company signed a memorandum of understanding with the Saudi Arabian Ministry of Culture in 2022, followed by a 2023 MOU with Manga Productions, a Saudi Arabian content company, to co-produce and distribute content across animation, TV series, films, webtoons and media infrastructure. CJ ENM has also hosted KCON, the World's largest K-pop festival, in Saudi Arabia for two consecutive years in 2022 and 2023. In June, CJ ENM inked a major content deal with Shahid, the Middle East and North Africa region's largest Arabic-language streaming platform, to bring 20 high-quality Korean series to a broader MENA audience. According to CJ ENM, with over 62 percent of its population under the age of 30, Saudi Arabia represents a dynamic consumer base that shows strong demand for Korean content across entertainment, live performances, gaming and sports. "CJ ENM Middle East will serve as a regional anchor, coordinating with its Korean headquarters to accelerate pan-MENA collaboration. By combining its regional networks and production expertise, CJ ENM aims to broaden its global reach and solidify its position in premium content creation," said an official from CJ ENM via a press release.
