Who will lead India cricket team in Test format? Ravichandran Ashwin backs Bumrah and Jadeja amid Gill buzz
25-year-old Shubman Gill is currently seen as the top choice, but veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has reminded everyone that names like Jasprit Bumrah and Ravindra Jadeja deserve equal attention.
Is it too soon for Shubman Gil to take the mantle as the Indian Test format captain?
Indian opening batter Shubman Gill is being groomed for leadership and has already led Gujarat Titans in the IPL. According to recent reports, Gill met head coach Gautam Gambhir and could be officially announced as the Test captain before the England series. His calm presence and strong performances make him a promising option.
But Ashwin believes it's too early to hand him full control. He feels Gill could serve as an understudy to someone more experienced. 'Why not make him learn from a senior first?' he said on his YouTube channel.
The 38-year-old off-spin bowler also put forward Jasprit Bumrah, who has led India in three Tests, as a strong candidate. Despite past back injuries, Ashwin compared Bumrah to Australia's Pat Cummins, who also had injury troubles but now captains in all formats.
Then there's Ravindra Jadeja, now India's most experienced red-ball player after Rohit and Kohli's retirement. He has over 300 wickets and 3000-plus runs but has never captained the Test team. His venture as the captain for Chennai Super Kings in the IPL is regarded as quite underwhelming. Still, Ashwin thinks Jadeja's all-round quality and experience make him a serious option.

He even suggested something new, asking each contender to present their long-term vision for Indian Test cricket, like they do in the Australian cricket team. That way, the captain isn't just picked on instinct, but also on ideas and leadership qualities.
As the selectors prepare for a big decision, Ashwin's comments have added weight to the conversation. Gill may be in pole position, but the calls to back someone with more experience, especially in the post-Kohli and post-Rohit era cannot be ignored.

ENG vs IND 2nd Test Session 2: Gill slams 250; England on back foot
India have taken the full control of the second Test at Edgbaston against England as they managed to go past the second session of Day 2 with the scoreboard reading 564 for 7. Skipper Shubman Gill continued his form and went on to score his maiden Test 250, showing no signs of slowing down. Washington Sundar, whose selection was much discussed, played the perfect anchor role and scored a brilliant 42 to justify his inclusion. India began the second session in steady fashion, trying to settle again after a 40-minute break, but soon changed the pace and launched a counter-attack with some big shots. Gill maintained his rhythm and brought up his maiden Test double hundred, becoming only the sixth Indian captain to achieve this feat. He also became the first Asian batter to cross the 200-run mark in SENA (South Africa, England, New Zealand and Australia) countries. Gill was brilliantly supported by Sundar, who played big shots of his own to help India cross the much-anticipated 500-run mark. By this point, England's bowlers appeared in complete disarray and began delivering more loose balls, making batting even easier for the Indian pair. As a result, Gill converted his double hundred into 250 in under an hour and broke Sachin Tendulkar's record of 254 for the highest Test score by an Indian skipper. India lost another wicket just at the stroke of the tea break, as Joe Root dismissed Sundar for 42 to finally expose India's lower order. By the time the session ended, India had added 150 more runs to their total with the loss of just one wicket. Shubman Gill (265 not out) and Washington Sundar (39 not out) will again be the two batters to resume India's proceedings in the third and final session of the day. Earlier, resuming from an overnight strong position, India added 109 runs in the first session while losing just one wicket. Captain Shubman Gill continued his rich form, bringing up his maiden Test 150 and becoming only the second Indian skipper after Mohammad Azharuddin to do so. Ravindra Jadeja provided solid support, completing his 23rd Test half-century before falling for 89 while trying to accelerate. The duo added a commanding 200-run stand for the fifth wicket—the second instance of an Indian pair achieving such a partnership at Edgbaston, after Jadeja and Rishabh Pant's 222-run stand in 2022. Despite occasional movement from Chris Woakes and some sharp bouncers from England's pacers, the Indian batters looked untroubled. A brief on-field altercation occurred over Jadeja's movement on the pitch after a shot, but it was quickly defused. IND vs ENG: Historic first! India record twin century partnerships for 6th and 7th wickets in SENA countries
India's captain Shubman Gill, center, celebrates after scoring 250 runs on day two of the second cricket test match between England and India at Edgbaston in Birmingham, England. AP/PTI(AP07_03_2025_000390A) In a historic first, India have registered two century partnerships for the sixth and seventh wickets in SENA countries in the ongoing second Test against England at Edgbaston. This is just the second time that a visiting team has had two century stands for the sixth wicket or lower in a Test innings in England, after West Indies at Trent Bridge in 1957. It's the second such instance for India in an away Test after Kingston in 1971. In both partnerships, captain Shubman Gill stood tall and was equally well supported by Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar . Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! On the opening day, when Ravindra Jadeja walked out to bat, India were in a spot of bother with the scorecard reading 211/5. Jadeja and Gill forged a 203-run stand for the sixth wicket. Jadeja was undone by a sharp bouncer bowled by Joshua Tongue. He missed a well-deserved century. If he had got those 11 runs, it would have been his second century at this venue. Next in, Washington Sundar stitched another valuable 144-run stand with captain Shubman Gill for the seventh wicket. Washington Sundar was cleaned up by Joe Root. India captain Shubman Gill scored a superb maiden Test double-century as he again led from the front against England in the second Test at Edgbaston on Thursday. Gill continued to take a toll on England's attack as he once more batted in near-flawless fashion. A hooked single off Tongue took Gill to 200 in 311 balls, including 21 fours and two sixes, with India then 472-6 as the elated skipper bowed to a capacity crowd in celebration. It was not long before the 25-year-old Gill, in just his second Test as captain, set a new record for the highest score by an India batsman in a Test in England, surpassing the great Sunil Gavaskar's 221 at The Oval back in 1979. Gill breaks records with commanding 200 in Edgbaston Test
Birmingham, July 3 (UNI) Shubman Gill carved out a memorable chapter in Indian cricket history today, smashing a magnificent maiden double century to put India in control of the Edgbaston Test against England. With this knock, Gill became only the third Indian to score a Test double hundred on English soil, joining Sunil Gavaskar and Rahul Dravid. Facing Josh Tongue in the 122nd over, Gill nudged a short ball down the leg side to fine leg to bring up his 200. His celebrations were restrained but emotional — a punch in the air, helmet off, a fist pump on one knee, and a trademark bow to the spectators, greeted by a deafening roar from the Indian supporters. This milestone marked Gill's first double hundred in Test cricket and a momentous achievement in multiple respects. He became the seventh Indian captain to score a Test double century, joining a distinguished list that includes Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi, Sunil Gavaskar, Sachin Tendulkar, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, and Virat Kohli — who leads with seven such scores. Notably, this was only the second double hundred by an Indian captain in an overseas Test, following Kohli's 200 at North Sound in 2016. Gill's feat also created a new benchmark in Asian cricket. He is now the first Asian captain to score a Test double century in SENA countries (South Africa, England, New Zealand, Australia), surpassing the previous best of 193 by Sri Lanka's Tillakaratne Dilshan at Lord's in 2011. At 25 years and 298 days, Gill became the second-youngest India captain to score a double century in Tests, trailing only Pataudi, who was 23 years and 39 days old when he achieved the feat against England in 1964. Gill now stands ahead of other India greats like Sachin Tendulkar (26y 189d) and Kohli (27y 260d) in this regard. On the global stage, Gill also became the second-youngest Test captain to score a double hundred in England. Of the 11 double centuries scored by Test captains in England (four by home players and seven by touring sides), only South Africa's Graeme Smith was younger, scoring 277 at Edgbaston at the age of 22 years and 175 days in 2003. Gill's masterclass, defined by crisp strokeplay, composure, and technical brilliance, held the India innings together and steered them into a commanding position. His knock is now etched as not only a personal landmark but a defining moment in India's ongoing Test legacy in England. UNI BDN SSP
