The Maggie Pills - Announce Sophomore Album 'Hearts Enduring Lingering Loss'

Scoop11-07-2025
Naarm/Melbourne's fierce and unflinching post-punk outfit The Maggie Pills have just announced their sophomore record 'Hearts Enduring Lingering Loss' - due out Friday, August 22, via Cheersquad Records & Tapes.
Alongside this announcement is their visceral single, 'Goths Of Disgrace', a fuzz-drenched, slow-burn track where menace and melody intertwine. Lead singer Delfi Sorondo's vocals float just above the chaos, as she trades melodic lines with angular guitar through the verses. Drawing from goth and punk influences, the track leans into dissonance without losing its haunting charm - a soundtrack for spirals, self-sabotage, and all the sweetness we somehow keep pushing away.
"It's about wanting something deeply - a project, a relationship, a life - and doing everything possible to destroy it," Delfi shares. "We put bitterness where we want sweetness. The art of love and the art of war get mixed up in the most confusing ways."
To mark the release, The Maggie Pills will perform at Naarm/Melbourne's Shotkickers on Friday, July 25. They will also bring their visceral live show to some of the city's most iconic venues later in the year, including Northcote Social Club, The Old Bar, The Night Cat and The Brunswick Ballroom.
In the live arena, the group has shared the stage with Black Lips (USA), Shihad, Cable Ties, The Meanies, Battlesnake, The Mark Of Cain and Private Function and have sold out multiple headline shows, including their 'GOLD' single launch.
Led by Argentinian frontwoman Delfi Sorondo and Venezuelan drummer Mario Perez, the group formed in 2019 shortly after both members immigrated to Australia. Their music has been supported by triple j, triple j Unearthed, Double J, and Australian Community Radio stations such as 3RRR, PBS, 2SER, and 4ZZZ, among many others. In the blogosphere, they have seen support from Rolling Stone (AUS), Pilerats, Backseat Mafia (UK/AUS), Blunt Magazine, The Music, Wall of Sound, Tone Deaf, and HEAVY Magazine.

Spanish playgroup takes root in Wānaka

Ana Estefania Kim is Korean by blood, was born and raised in Buenos Aires, completed her studies in Los Angeles and is now raising her daughters in Wānaka. Her journey is proof that cultural identity is fluid and cannot be confined to a single restrictive label, a sentiment she aims to pass down to young children in Wānaka through a Spanish playgroup she recently helped start. Her diverse story began even before she was born. The aftermath of the 1950s Korean War pushed Ms Kim's grandparents to Argentina during a time when South America was seeking rural workers. Her parents, both Korean, met in Argentina and started a family in Buenos Aires. Ms Kim grew up speaking Spanish at school and Korean at home, which was only the beginning of a life enriched with diversity. During the early 2000s, life in Argentina became more difficult and Ms Kim's parents searched for a better future. At 18, Ms Kim immigrated for the first time to Los Angeles when her mother got a job in the fashion industry. Adjusting to American life was not the only culture shock that awaited Ms Kim as she soon discovered a large Korean community in the city. "All of a sudden I was more Korean than Argentinian," she said, explaining that the move became an unexpected opportunity for her family to reconnect with their roots. The exposure to such a wide spectrum of cultural experiences ignited an interest in indigenous cultures for Ms Kim as she went on to study social anthropology. "I was hungry for belonging, I wanted to learn what makes indigenous cultures unique instead of mainstream." Her work led her to travel and explore cultures including a trip to Ecuador where she worked as an archaeologist and also happened to meet her future husband, who had grown up in New Zealand. The couple eventually made the decision to move first to Wellington and then to Wānaka when Ms Kim's partner got a job a few years ago. Not long after moving to town Ms Kim began to connect with the Latino community that grows more vibrant every day. She felt thrilled to once again reconnect with a special and fundamental part of her upbringing. As a child of immigration and multi-culturalism, Ms Kim felt her background could at times act as a social superpower. "I'm very adaptable and flexible," she said. "I can also move in different cultural spaces because I have access to languages." However, this strength did not come without the cost of having to summarise her multi-layered identity into a single label. "Sometimes I have to constantly justify my identity. It just gets tiring ... people want to put you in boxes." Although she had navigated this experience her entire life, as a mother to daughters who would also grow up being from a diverse background, she felt compelled to ensure their world views were as broad as possible. This led to the creation of the Spanish playgroup in the Upper Clutha. "I want my kids to be exposed to all the cultures I grew up with ... The idea is everything is immersive and everything is in Spanish." The group has already met twice with around 15 families joining in to do activities such as baking, sport and dancing while incorporating Spanish words and phrases into the fun. Ms Kim has already seen a growing support for the parent-led group as more families share the same desire to pass down their culture to their children in an interactive and social way.

The Maggie Pills - Return With Haunting Single 'Velobell'

Naarm/Melbourne-based punk rock band The Maggie Pills have just returned with their atmospheric single ' Velobell ' – produced/co-mixed by the band's own Mario Perez, recorded and mixed by Brad Jackson, and mastered by Grammy-winning engineer Emerson Mancini (Kendrick Lamar, Paramore, Linkin Park). 'Velobell' unfolds with a discordant chord progression and lead singer Delfi Sorondo 's breathy timbre, creating a soundscape that is raw and arresting. Grungy guitars, galloping basslines and driving drums underscore the resounding chorus as the track builds with explosive energy tinged with unease. Complete with an emphatic guitar solo, 'Velobell' is a blistering fusion of grunge distortion and punk urgency. The Maggie Pills talk about the inspiration behind 'Velobell': "At its heart, the song is a message of resilience. It's about the moments when we lose sight of ourselves, when life feels heavy and out of sync - yet something within us refuses to let go. Whether you're wrestling grief, burnout, addiction, or just the quiet emptiness of everyday life, 'Velobell' is a howl from the void that says: 'You're still in there, and you're not alone'." Accompanying the release is a gripping music video, directed by Mario Perez, filmed by Ryan Cara and edited by Sam Mapplebeck (Amyl and the Sniffers, Tropical Fuck Storm). Set in a makeshift forest shrouded in darkness, the clip complements the gritty audio production, evoking a dreamlike descent into chaos. Unflinching close-ups and jarring overexposure dissolve the distance between the band and the audience."The video doesn't just accompany the music - it embodies it," explains Delfi. "Every frame is drenched in a sense of suffocation, desperation, and emotional intensity, inviting the viewer into a world where escape feels impossible." To support 'Velobell' the band will play a launch show at John Curtin Hotel in Narrm/Melbourne on Friday, June 13. In the live arena, the group has shared the stage with Black Lips (USA), Shihad, Cable Ties, The Meanies, Battlesnake, The Mark Of Cain and Private Function and have sold out multiple headline shows, including their ' GOLD ' single launch. Led by Argentinian frontwoman Delfi Sorondo and Venezuelan drummer Mario Perez, the group formed in 2019 shortly after both members immigrated to Australia.
