VOLKSWAGEN'S fan-favourite GTI performance range is set to continue into its all-electric future.
In fact, the German giant promises it will be better than ever, with multiple model lines confirmed by CEO Thomas Schafer - who claims these new machines will be "mind-blowing" to drive.

According to Autocar, the GTI range will go electric in 2026, starting with the ID-named GTI concept – a souped-up iteration of the ID 2 supermini.
Naturally, a GTI version of the forthcoming all-electric ninth-generation Golf will also arrive by the end of the decade, marking the beginning of 'a whole group of GTI" models set to roll out in subsequent years.
Work is reportedly already under way on the development of the first electric GTI models, with particular attention being paid to ensuring they are just as fun to drive as their predecessors.
Schafer said: "First of all, can you make an electric Golf exciting? Absolutely.
"We have driven a few prototypes that we have built on the new set-up, and it is mind-blowing."
He added that the brand's priority is to engineer its electric GTI range in a way that makes its hot hatchbacks feel distinct from the standard models.
Schafer said: "What about the sound? What about the total feel? The handling and so on can be done.'
However, with the current petrol-powered car set to remain on sale for several more years, the production version of the electric Golf GTI will not appear in showrooms for some time.
Schafer added: "We have time now, as the Golf is running very well into the end of this decade, and at the end of the decade, we'll bring an electric Golf."
He also claimed the electric GTI will be "a monster car", adding: "I'm very happy with the progress.

'It's cool, and you can make it exciting. It has to be exciting, and it has to be authentic.'
No date has been given for when VW plans to unveil the final version of the ID 2 GTI, although the standard car is due to launch in early 2026.
Earlier this year, we revealed how the most noticeable change to the ninth-gen Golf would be its nameplate - with it set to be called the ID Golf.
VW's ID range, which currently includes several models, is how the brand separates its lineup of fully electric vehicles - all developed as part of their commitment to sustainable mobility and reducing carbon emissions.
The "ID" stands for Intelligent Design, Identity, and Idea, which reflects the German marque's vision for the future.
Last year, the Golf celebrated its 50th year and we were lucky to rub shoulders with the Mk1 Golf Owners Club at the NEC Classic Motor Show in Birmingham.

Benjamin Sesko could be a more realistic target and a cheaper option after RB Leipzig dropped their asking price from £68million-£85m to around £59.7m, according to German outlet Bild. With the Gunners looking elsewhere, United could have an opportunity to swoop and make a statement signing ahead of Amorim's first full season. And in a fresh boost for United, Sporting appear to be making plans for life after Gyokeres, who is at odds with the club over his price tag. With their star striker's future up in the air, the Lisbon side have reportedly set their sights on Union Saint-Gilloise striker Franjo Ivanovic as a potential replacement. Per Sporting have lodged a bid of around £17m, which is short of the Belgian champions' valuation of £25.6m. Besiktas and Frankfurt, plus clubs in Italy, are also said to be interested in Ivanovic, who netted 20 goals for the Belgian champions last season. Sporting landing a striker with a strong goalscoring record for less than £30m may also help United in their negotiations for Gyokeres, who is at odds with the Sporting hierarchy over his price tag. It had been reported that the player believes he has a verbal agreement with the club whereby he can be sold for a fee worth £59m. Sporting president Frederico Varandas has denied that such an arrangement exists but has confirmed that the club did promise the 27-year-old they would not hold out for the full value stated in the release clause, believed to be almost £85m. And in a fresh boost to United this weekend, Varandas admitted that there is a "strong likelihood" Gyokeres will leave the club this summer and for a possible discounted fee. He said: "Sporting is calm regarding this matter. Secondly, Sporting does not need to sell Viktor Gyokeres. Fortunately, we have moved past the phase of selling our main asset. "However, we remain sensitive to Viktor's dreams or those of any other athlete. Sporting has made a commitment that, after weeks of meetings, we will not demand the full amount of the clause; we will be reasonable regarding the amount requested for Viktor. "Today, there is a strong likelihood that he will leave. I won't disclose the amount, but the player knows what it is. I can say that Viktor will not leave for 60+10m. He won't leave, absolutely not. "In recent weeks, we have been paying attention. I saw a player, [Martin] Zubimendi, who is six months younger than Viktor, go [potentially to Arsenal] for 65m, and I saw Matheus Cunha move to Manchester United for around 75m euros [£62.5m. We are talking about players who are 26 years old. I believe Viktor could leave, unless he has the worst agent in the world, which I don't believe, as his agent is one of the best in the world."

Sporting Lisbon chief reveals Gyokeres discount in boost to Arsenal and Man Utd
Viktor Gyokeres' attempts to leave Sporting Lisbon has turned into a bitter saga but there could potentially be some light at the end of the tunnel with Man United and Arsenal aiming to sign him Sporting Lisbon president Federico Varandas has offered a fresh update on Viktor Gyokeres ' future and claimed for the first time that he COULD leave for a reduced fee. The Swedish forward finds himself in the middle of a intense tug of war between Manchester United and Arsenal this summer. Gyokeres is keen to leave the Portuguese giants, with reports suggesting that he had even gone on strike to push through an exit after he thought they had broken a promise to sell him for a reduced amount. Sporting wanted to repair relations with their star forward, only for him to turn down a clear the air meeting earlier this month. Varandas has now spoken out again and is of the opinion that Gyokeres will be on the move before the end of the transfer window and confirmed that he will be allowed to depart for less than a €100m (£85.4m) release clause written into his contract. George Russell once rejected a Mercedes contract offer from Toto Wolff before the pair eventually joined forces, with the British driver leading the team's charge in 2025 George Russell boldly rejected Toto Wolff's advances a decade ago before rising to become Mercedes' leading driver. In his early motorsport career, Russell was courted by high-profile teams as he shone in the lower tiers, with Wolff seeking out the young British talent during his early years in charge at Mercedes. While excelling in the European Formula 3 series and pondering his next step, Russell engaged in discussions with Wolff but ultimately chose to join the UK-based squad Carlin, backed by Volkswagen. He also declined an offer worth "a lot of money" from BMW, wary that it might hinder his chances of joining Mercedes in the future. Russell, who eventually teamed up with Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes full-time after three years at Williams, told Motorsport Magazine in 2022: "I was already having conversations with Toto and Mercedes prior to joining Carlin and Volkswagen. "I actually had a deal on the table to have almost the same backing from Mercedes as I had from Volkswagen. But because there wasn't an opportunity open at PREMA [a team with Mercedes links], the next team I would have had to join would be a German team called Mucke Motorsport, who I felt, for my first season F3, wouldn't be as well suited to me as a British team in Carlin." Russell politely declined Wolff's offer via email, only to be told he was making a mistake. Russell added: "So after my meeting with Toto at the start of 2015, I sent him an email just to say, 'I really appreciate the meeting and thanks for all of your advice. Just to let you know, I'll actually be joining Carlin and Volkswagen as opposed to Mücke Motorsport and Mercedes because I believe it's better for my career.'" "And I had the opinion that if I went out and did a good job, Mercedes would still be interested. So he replied back, 'I think you're making a wrong decision but let's stay in touch and let's see where we go from there.'" However, Russell and Wolff's partnership was not too far away as the driver joined the Mercedes junior programme in 2017. Wolff later influenced Russell's step up to F1 with Mercedes-powered Williams in 2019. Russell memorably stood in for Hamilton at the 2020 Sakhir Grand Prix after the seven-time world champion had been sidelined by Covid. Russell almost beat team-mate Valtteri Bottas to pole and was on course to win the race until a Mercedes pitstop error wrecked his chances. He eventually joined the team full-time in 2022 and has four wins to his name, the last of which came at the recent Canadian Grand Prix, where he finished just in front of Max Verstappen. Despite his stellar 2025 performances, rumours persist that Verstappen might take his seat in 2026, with Wolff making no secret of his desire to land the four-time world champion. However, Russell, who has been linked to Aston Martin, has no issue with his team's interest in his arch-rival. "Why wouldn't teams be interested in Max? If every driver had no contracts for next year, Max would be No.1 for every single team. And that's understandable," he said ahead of this weekend's Austrian Grand Prix.
