Sixers draft history: Mo Speights selected No. 16 overall back in 2008
With the NBA draft right around the corner, now is the time to look at some past drafts and see what the Philadelphia 76ers have done in their history. The Sixers have selected some big-time players in the past who have become an important part of the fabric of the franchise's history.
This series continues with the 2008 draft. After the Sixers made a surprise run to the playoffs and gave the heavily favored Detroit Pistons a run for their money, they held the No. 16 pick as they were looking to add to their roster. They did so by selecting Mo Speights out of Florida.
Speights spent three seasons with the Sixers helping them reach the playoffs in 2009 and 2011. He averaged 7.2 points and 3.7 rebounds in 205 games for Philadelphia before he was sent to the Memphis Grizzlies in a 3-team deal in 2012.
Speights would go on to play 10 years in the league averaging 7.9 points and 4.1 rebounds playing for the Sixers, Grizzlies, Cleveland Cavaliers, Golden State Warriors, Los Angeles Clippers, and Orlando Magic. He earned the nickname "Mo Buckets" during his time with the Warriors and finished seventh in the 6th Man of the Year voting in 2015 for Golden State.

NBA legend says Mavericks' Cooper Flagg is 'above rookie curve'
To absolutely nobody's surprise, the Dallas Mavericks drafted Cooper Flagg with the number one overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft. And how could they not have? Flagg was the projected no. 1 pick across the board after just a single season with the Duke Blue Devils, and even been called the top American prospect in basketball since his current teammate, Anthony Davis, was drafted back in 2012. And his skill at such a young age is shocking NBA legends, including Shaquille O'Neal, who has been very vocal in his praise for Flagg and his game. In an interview with DJ Siddiqi of RG, the NBA Hall of Famer continued his praise, saying Flagg was above the curve that most people set for rookies in the game today, especially young ones like Flagg that are barely out of high school. "In his highlights, he looks phenomenal, O'Neal said. "You must realize he's an 18-year-old kid. You can't put too much pressure on him. From my experience, you get two years before people really start staying it's time to win, but I think he's way above that 18-year-old curve." "Shaq" also praised the Dallas fan base, saying that Flagg will be treated well where he is, due to the controversy the team has been a part of over the past few months, and compared him to another Mavs legend. "This fan base is definitely going to treat him well through the ups and downs, because we celebrate Dirk Nowitzki," said O'Neal. "I remember Dirk when he first came in. He was not Dirk, he turned into Dirk. But the Dallas fans have always been great. Cooper Flagg is playing for a great organization, great town, great fan base. He'll be absolutely fine." Given that the young star just dropped 31 points on the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA Summer League recently, it seems that Flagg is settling in sooner than most may have expected.

Jayson Tatum sheds boot in encouraging Celtics rehab sign after Achilles tear
Jayson Tatum is making strides on his road to recovery. The Celtics star revealed on Instagram Sunday that he no longer has a boot on his right foot as he heals from the ruptured Achilles tendon he suffered during Game 4 of Boston's second-round series against the Knicks on May 12. Tatum underwent surgery about 18 hours after the gruesome injury, and he has been rehabbing throughout the summer. Jayson Tatum posted an Instagram story Sunday of himself without a boot on his right foot. @jaytatum0/Instagram Before posting his update on Instagram, he was last seen working out with the Chattanooga men's basketball team at the program's facility on Friday. The Celtics have not offered a timetable on Tatum's return, but the 27-year-old is widely expected to miss most, if not all, of the 2025-26 season. 'He seems to be doing really well. Rehabbing's hard. Anyone who's been through a long injury and a long recovery, it's just a challenge,' Celtics president Brad Stevens said on the broadcast of Boston's July 13 Summer League game. 'Mental challenge, physical challenge, obviously. But he got the surgery right away, and from that point on, his mindset was, 'We're going after this thing and trying to get better.' Jayson Tatum ruptured his right Achilles tendon in Game 4 of the Celtics' second-round series against the Knicks. AP 'He's a competitor. He's gonna compete in everything he does, including rehab. I'm really encouraged. I've basically seen him every day in Boston for the last 50 days. Usually, he goes away at the end of the season and then comes back, but he's just stayed there and been doing his rehab. It's been fun to spend time with him every day and just try to catch up and see how he's doing as we watch him make the strides he needs to make.' Tatum, a five-time All-NBA honoree, averaged 26.8 points, 8.7 rebounds and 6.0 assists last season. When he makes his return, he'll join a new-look Celtics team that no longer features Kristaps Porzingis and Jrue Holiday, but has new additions in Anfernee Simons and Georges Niang.

LeBron trade proposal involves Paul George going to Lakers, Sixers teaming James with Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, ex-Baylor Bear V.J. Edgecombe
The Los Angeles Lakers' latest move, signing Marcus Smart to a two-year, $11 million contract, was one Luka Doncic, not LeBron James, personally signed off on. It's clear that the power has shifted in L.A., and James may not be willing to stick around as a swayless second fiddle. FOX Sports proposed several potential James trades to address the situation. One of them would involve LeBron taking a 'leap of faith' and waiving his no-trade clause to okay a move to the Philadelphia 76ers to play with an oft-injured and aging former MVP big man (Joel Embiid) and a young core (Tyrese Maxey, Jared McCain, VJ Edgecombe). 'James and the 76ers could be a match for a variety of reasons,' FOX Sports' staff wrote. 'For starters, Philadelphia is better than its 24-58 record last season, as the prolonged absences of Joel Embiid and Paul George played an enormous role in that outcome. As a result of their nightmare 2024-25, the 76ers got the No. 3 pick in the 2025 NBA Draft — assisted by a bump in the NBA Draft Lottery — and selected Baylor standout VJ Edgecombe. They also have 2024 first-rounder Jared McCain returning from a knee injury and could still re-sign restricted free agent Quentin Grimes, who broke out to average a career-high 21.9 points per game in 28 contests after the 76ers acquired him in February. 'Put James with star guard Tyrese Maxey and Philadelphia's compelling young core, and the 76ers should be at least a top-eight seed in an Eastern Conference reeling in injuries (e.g. the Indiana Pacers with Tyrese Haliburton and the Boston Celtics with Jayson Tatum). Plus, if Embiid can return at some point during the season, Philadelphia then has a three-headed scoring monster in Embiid, Maxey and James and is a legitimate threat in the East. This is a franchise built to contend right now. Of course, that potential being realized is heavily reliant on health. 'Philadelphia could base a trade package for James around George and a future unprotected first-round pick (2030). The Lakers get an immediate replacement for James in George and future draft capital for their troubles, while the 76ers shed future payroll and embark on a compelling, short-term experiment. And Philadelphia certainly qualifies as a big market, likely to James' desire. 'All that said, holding out hope for both Embiid being close to 100% for the postseason and Philadelphia's young nucleus making a drastic jump would involve James taking a major leap of faith.' A healthy Embiid may have been enough to entice James to play in the City of Brotherly Love. James as the Magic Johnson to Embiid's Kareem Abdul-Jabar could've made for electric hoops, especially with young shooters and secondary playmakers like Maxey, McCain, and Edgecombe around him. Alas, the Lakers appear set to stick with James. Yahoo Sports' Chris Cwik asserted that the Athletic's report on James planning to go to training camp 'should presumably end rumors suggesting James could leave the franchise ahead of his 23rd season in the NBA.' And yet, that pesky ESPN story and LeBron opting into the remaining year on his contract will always give James trade rumors juice.
