Kids at 30: the most controversial movie of the Nineties still has the power to disgust

Audiences, critics and politicians the world over were horrified by Larry Clark and Harmony Korine's dramatisation of wayward Manhattan youth. Three decades on, writes Adam White, its provocations remain jolting – and desperate
'This is disgusting material that panders to paedophile fantasies,' went one prominent Liberal Democrat MP in 1996, amid the UK release of Kids, an artful bit of pubescent scuzz that had already horrified its fans and its detractors on the other side of the Atlantic one year earlier. Britain loves an opportunity for performative outrage — even more so back then. This was the same year, it's worth noting, that the Daily Mail reacted to the release of David Cronenberg's kinky thriller Crash with trademark composure: 'Ban This Car Crash Sex Film', its front page blared.
But the Kids controversy isn't one we can look back on now, heads in collective hands, mortified that we took it all quite so seriously. For Kids was, is and (hopefully, at least) always will be a pungent provocation; a grimly nihilistic portrait of wayward youth that revels in its own eagerness to disgust. On this occasion, the Lib Dems may have had a point.

'Harry and William must bury the hatchet - or there'll be incalculable damage'

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, need to be "brought in from the cold" five years after they quit royal duties for a new life in California, an expert says Prince Harry and Prince William must end their feud now - or the UK will face "incalculable damage," a royal expert claims. Meghan Markle and Prince Harry will "seethe and seek revenge" if William, heir to the throne, refuses to make peace with his brother, according to newspaper columnist Andrew Norman Wilson. He argues this would lead to great tensions when William, Prince of Wales, becomes king. ‌ "When Charles vacates the stage, as one day he must, and William is anointed, a middle-aged brother in exile, on non-speakers with the sovereign but with a potential audience of billions, could do incalculable damage," writes Mr Wilson. ‌ "It would be miles better [than Harry writing another book, for instance], then, that the Sussexes be brought in from the cold. Both sides should be seeking, not only diplomatic and political help, but personal counsel. "This was a pair of brothers who, from earliest childhood, were facing the broken marriage of their parents; their mother's untimely death; unfounded and scurrilous speculation about Harry's paternity; and generally a gnawing inferiority complex on Harry's part – some of it understandable. Who wouldn't feel inferior, after all, to the heir to throne?" READ MORE: King Charles accused of 'slap in the face' by Princess Diana's personal aide ‌ But Harry and Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, sensationally quit royal duties in 2020 for a new life in California. They've since carried out TV work - with a large deal with Netflix - and Harry has released his controvesial memoirs Spare. It's Spare, though, that fuelled the tensions between Harry and William. With TV work seemingly drying up in the US, critics have suggested Prince Harry may need to overcome - or ease - the tensions to return to The Firm instead. Hints, including Harry and Meghan's decision to include the titles HRH (His/Her Royal Highness) as well as the surname Sussex on passport applications for little Archie and Lillibet, have emerged recently. And Mr Wilson, a writer with several decades' experience, continued in today's Daily Mail: "All those who have William's best interests at heart – and this must include everyone who wants a bright future for the monarchy – must be begging him to extend some kind of olive branch to his wayward, disloyal and maddening younger sibling... If Harry and his father find a way to be reconciled, that would be a fine thing. But it is the next reign – that of William V – that is likely to be longer and of far more consequence. "It's no exaggeration to say that this row could one day begin the process that leads to a republic. And that could come much sooner than we royalists might like to admit." Mr Wilson's opinion column comes as it is understood Duke of Sussex wishes to avoid "ambushing" the royals in a bid to maintain regular communication with his cancer-battling father. The olive branch came as senior staff for the King's estranged son spoke with a palace official of a wish for a 'roadmap for more regular communication' with his family.

Magda Szubanski is seen for the first time in weeks as she undergoes chemo for her stage four cancer - and reveals the unique way she is getting through treatment

Magda Szubanski has provided fans with a heartfelt and surprisingly upbeat update as she battles stage four cancer. The beloved Kath and Kim star, 64, took to social media on Monday night with a clip revealing her shaved head - a result of chemotherapy as she battles Mantle Cell Lymphoma, a rare and aggressive blood cancer. Despite the gruelling treatment, the Aussie comedy icon appeared in good spirits as she proudly showed off how she was keeping herself entertained: by building a Lego set. 'Having cancer is not all bad because look... Lego Land Rover! I am such an 11-year-old boy trapped in a 64-year-old lesbian's body,' Magda quipped. Magda, who announced her diagnosis in May, said she has turned to Lego therapy to help her through the toughest battle of her life. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. 'The upside of cancer - it ain't all bad!! thank you Lego for my new Lego Land Rover classic Defender,' she wrote. 'This will keep me busy for a bit. Tricky with chemo induced numbness in fingertips but… I've planned ahead and ordered a building kit with pliers and finger protectors!! GOOD TIMES!!! Now all I need is a Lego Queen Elizabeth II to pop in the driver's seat.' Her post struck a chord with fans, with a slew of celebrity friends flooding the comments with messages of love and support. 'Love this! Love you,' wrote The Bachelor star Alex Nation. 'God bless you and your beautiful outlook on life and Lego. sending positive vibes,' Married At First Sight's Dave Hand chipped in and celebrity chef Colin Fassnidge shared an applause emoji. In May, Magda announced on social media she was battling Mantle Cell Lymphoma. She appeared on camera with a shaved head after beginning her treatment to fight the disease. 'Hello my lovelies. So, the head is shaved in anticipation of it all falling out in a couple of weeks because I have just been diagnosed with a very rare, very aggressive, very serious lymphoma,' she began. 'It is one of the nasty ones, unfortunately. But the good thing is I'm surrounded by beautiful friends and family and an incredible medical support team. 'Honestly, we have the best in the world here in Australia, particularly in Melbourne, so I feel very fortunate. 'It's pretty confronting. It is a full on. But new treatments keep coming down the pipeline all the time.' Magda said she has started a treatment called the Nordic protocol, which treats Mantle Cell Lymphoma by shrinking the tumours with a combination of drugs administered in five phases. It's known as the Nordic regimen based upon its clinical trial sites in Denmark and Norway. The actress explained she will be 'lying very low' due to her weak immune system. 'I won't sugar-coat it: it's rough. But I'm hopeful. I'm being lovingly cared for by friends and family, my medical team is brilliant and I've never felt more held by the people around me,' she said. 'Please keep a distance though because I will be very immunocompromised. So I can't hug no more. Don't hug me, kiss me, or breathe anywhere near me! Wave enthusiastically from a safe distance and know I love you madly.' She said the cancer was discovered during a routine breast screening. 'This is an obscure cancer and was only discovered incidentally via a breast screen where they found my lymph nodes were up,' she explained. 'TBH, I've been feeling pretty rats**t for ages. So I asked for extra bloods and - voila! So the take away is - get tested and listen to your body! For now, just know I'm in good hands, good spirits.' What is mantle cell lymphoma? Mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) is a rare type of non-Hodgkin lymphoma that causes white blood cells to grow and multiply uncontrollably. The average age at diagnosis is 60 to 65 years and is two to three times more common in men than women. The initial symptom of MCL is usually a painless swelling in the neck, armpit, and/or groin. It is usually treated with combination chemotherapy, but other therapies include radioimmunotherapy, radiotherapy and stem cell transplants. It is aggressive and often comes back after patients go into remission.
