Millions More Windows Users Get Microsoft's Free Upgrade Offer

Forbes24-06-2025
Windows 11 finally catches up.
With little more than 100 days until the end of Windows 10, Microsoft has just hit a huge milestone that's been years in the making. This changes the PC landscape and follows years of warnings and nags. At times it seemed we'd never get here.
Windows 10's vast user base has proven remarkably stubborn and difficult to move. This is not helped by the hardware hurdles in upgrading a PC to Windows 11, which means at least 240 million users — likely more — need to buy a new device.
Last week, I reported that Windows 11 was finally closing the gap, with a surge in upgrades. Today, for the first time Windows 11's global share matches that of Windows 10. That means it will overtake it within days, finally dominating the market.
Windows 10 Vs Windows 11 (End May 2025)
Last year the trickle of upgrades moved back and forth, creating some heartburn in the cyber community, as the prospect of a security nightmare with hundreds of millions of Windows users running unsupported PCs started to seem very real.
Even as recently as April this year, Windows 11 saw a surprising reversal, as it seemed to win back some market share at its newer sibling's expense. All this data comes courtesy of Statcounter and won't be exact, but will be directional. It's all we have.
Windows 11 Vs Windows 10 (Current June data)
This Windows 11 overtake has already happened in the U.S. and some other key markets, but most markets have dragged. But it's now increasingly likely eligible PCs will be pushed to Windows 11 anyway, and others will be nagged until PCs are changed.
At the end of last May, Statcounter reported that Windows 11 (43.22%) still lagged Windows 10 (53.19%) by around 10% — that's around 150 million users. Now just three weeks later, both versions of Windows are dead level on 47.65%.
We've seen u-turns before, but this does finally look like the surge needed to isolate those PCs that can't upgrade and outline the size of the problem that will hit on October 14. Whether you need an upgrade or a new PC, don't let your device fall off support.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 stuns in JerryRigEverything's brutal durability test

TL;DR The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 has successfully passed JerryRigEverything's intense durability test. The phone showed exceptional structural strength despite its ultra-thin design. Samsung has also greatly improved dust resistance on the phone. The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 has just aced one of the internet's most famous durability tests. In a new video titled 'Samsung Z 7 Durability Test – The End is Near,' tech YouTuber Zack Nelson of JerryRigEverything put Samsung's latest ultra-thin foldable through his battery of stress tests, including the dreaded bend test. While no Galaxy Fold device has ever snapped in half during one of Nelson's durability evaluations, the Z Fold 7's ultra-thin design had many, including us, expecting a different outcome this time around. What actually happened, however, was nothing short of remarkable. In a true showcase of Samsung's engineering prowess, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 not only withstood a forceful bend attempt, it came out with flying colors without the inner display cracking or creasing. Even Samsung's redesigned hinge remained intact at the end of the torture test. We genuinely expected the device to fail under physical pressure, but it retained full functionality, proving just how far Samsung has come in foldable phone durability. This is no small feat for a phone as thin and lightweight as the Galaxy Z Fold 7. Nelson called it 'Literal black magic' in his video. Samsung also previously revealed that the Galaxy Z Fold 7 is rated for an impressive 500,000 folds. That's nearly ten years of opening and closing the phone 150 times a day. So if you are eyeing the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and were worried about the phone snapping in half, this durability test should give you confidence that Samsung has made a pretty strong device. Meanwhile, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 also impressed in the dust exposure test. Despite having an IP48 rating, meaning it's not fully dustproof, the phone's display and hinge remained intact after being subject to a significant amount of dust and debris. That said, the inner screen of the phone still has some limitations. While the outer Gorilla Glass Victus 2-protected display of the Fold 7 held up well in JerryRigEverything's scratch tests (with deeper grooves at level 7), the inner flexible display began to scratch at level 2. That means even a forced fingernail or a toddler taking a pen to the phone can do damage. This is probably why Samsung includes one free screen protector replacement for the phone within the first year. All things considered, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 is shaping up to be a landmark device for Samsung's design team. Between making the world's thinnest foldable and ensuring the phone can survive harsh durability tests, the company is redefining what users can expect from modern foldable smartphones.

Bitcoin Hits $1T Realized Cap as Price Holds Above $118K After $9B BTC Sale by Satoshi-Era Whale

Bitcoin continues to trade above the $118,000 mark, holding steady after a week of significant institutional developments and a landmark milestone in on-chain metrics. According to CoinDesk Data, BTC was last up 1.45% over the past 24 hours, bringing its 30-day gain to 10.42% and lifting its year-to-date performance to more than 26%. Blockchain analytics firm Glassnode highlighted in its latest "Week On-chain" report that July has brought one of the strongest upside breakouts of the year. After dipping to around $105,400 earlier in the month, bitcoin surged to an all-time high of $122,700 before settling into a consolidation phase just below that level. The report noted that this price rally triggered substantial profit-taking from long-term holders while also drawing in new buyers, leading to a sustained inflow of capital into the asset. The result is that bitcoin's realized capitalization — a measure of the total value of coins based on the last time they were moved — has now surpassed $1 trillion for the first time. Unlike market capitalization, which reflects current price multiplied by total supply, realized cap tracks the actual liquidity deployed into bitcoin over time. Glassnode says this milestone reflects growing conviction among both long-term holders and new entrants, and signals a deepening of the asset's liquidity base. The on-chain analytics firm also claims that this points to bitcoin's growing role on the macroeconomic stage, with the ability to absorb and settle ever larger volumes of capital. On Friday, Mike Novogratz's Galaxy Digital (GLXY) announced in a press release "the successful execution of one of the largest notional bitcoin transactions in the history of crypto on behalf of a client." Galaxy said that it had executed a more than $9 billion bitcoin transaction on behalf of a legacy investor from the early days of the network. The 80,000 BTC sale is one of the largest of its kind in crypto history and was reportedly part of the client's estate planning. Meanwhile, on Friday, CNBC resurfaced a detail from Tesla's second quarter of 2022 earnings filings, which disclosed that the company had converted approximately 75% of its bitcoin into fiat currency during that quarter. With bitcoin hovering around $118,000 on Friday morning, David Faber, a "Squawk on the Street" co-host, estimated that had Tesla held onto its full bitcoin holdings, the value of its BTC holdings would now exceed $5 billion — four times higher than its reported valuation of $1.25 billion as of the most recent quarter. Of course, this is the same kind of criticism that has been aimed at the German government for selling its bitcoin holdings too early. In June and July 2024, the German authorities liquidated nearly 50,000 BTC seized from a film piracy case, netting roughly $2.9 billion at an average price around $57,900 per coin. At the time, officials justified the move by citing legal obligations to avoid potential loss in value and quickly liquidate seized assets. However, in hindsight, this strategy has come under fire as the value of bitcoin soared in the following year. On May 19, crypto market intelligence platform Arkham noted on X that those same coins would have been worth more than $5.24 billion had the German government held on to them, meaning it missed out on over $2.35 billion in potential gains. Critics argue that the sale not only left a fortune on the table but also contributed to short-term price pressure on the entire bitcoin market. Technical Analysis Highlights According to CoinDesk Research's technical analysis data model, during the 23-hour session ending July 26 at 14:00 UTC, the digital asset rallied more than 3%, carving out a $3,300 trading range between $114,937 and $118,237. Support has remained firm in the $117,140–$117,330 zone, while resistance appears to be consolidating just below the $118,200 threshold. The final hour of trading saw modest gains of 0.07% as BTC climbed from $118,095 to $118,183, with tight-range consolidation suggesting continued buying interest just below psychological resistance.
