Deputy digital minister urges faster AI laws to combat fraud

SHAH ALAM: Deputy Digital Minister Datuk Wilson Ugak Kumbong has called for urgent legislation to regulate artificial intelligence (AI), citing its increasing misuse in fraudulent activities.
He revealed that AI-related crimes have caused an estimated RM5 billion in global losses between 2020 and 2024.
Speaking at the Gawai Kitai Ngiling Bidai 2025 celebration, Ugak stressed the need for stricter controls and penalties to deter AI misuse.
'I expect the AI legislation to be tabled this year so that we can tighten control and outline appropriate penalties for those who misuse this technology,' he said.
The minister referenced recent incidents involving high-profile figures, including former Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani and Johor Police Chief Datuk M Kumar S Muthuvelu.
Both officials denied involvement in viral AI-generated videos depicting them receiving aid from an individual claiming to be a 'Datuk'.
To combat such threats, the ministry is intensifying public awareness efforts through the Digital Malaysia Tour programme. Ugak noted his visits to Sabah, Kapit in Sarawak, and Penang to educate rural communities on AI fraud tactics.
Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo previously stated that a comprehensive report on AI regulations would be submitted by the end of June.

Singapore drug suspects try to flee twice — all caught after police chase and crash

SINGAPORE, June 29 — A car chase through Singapore's quiet early morning streets ended with a crash, a hospital trip, and three young suspects in handcuffs. According to The Straits Times, it all kicked off around 5.45am today, when police officers spotted a car awkwardly parked along Syed Alwi Road, heading toward Jalan Besar. Suspicious, they stopped to investigate — but the driver had other plans. The 25-year-old man behind the wheel bolted, prompting a foot chase. He was eventually caught and taken to hospital conscious, before being arrested for drug-related offences. Turns out, he was already on the police's radar for previous traffic violations. But the drama didn't end there. While officers were dealing with the runaway driver, a 25-year-old woman — one of the passengers — decided to hop into the car and drive off. The vehicle was later spotted again on Syed Alwi Road, but this time it sped off and slammed into a lorry. Inside the vehicle, police found what appeared to be controlled drugs and drug paraphernalia. Both the woman and another passenger, a 23-year-old female, were arrested for suspected drug offences. All three cases have now been handed over to the Central Narcotics Bureau. Investigations are still ongoing.

Drunk passenger nabbed for knifing Hong Kong taxi driver after being woken at stop

HONG KONG, June 29 — A taxi driver was left injured after a drunk passenger allegedly lashed out with a knife for waking him at the end of a ride in Tai Kok Tsui, Hong Kong early this morning. Police told South China Morning Post they were alerted to the incident at 5.58am, after the 35-year-old driver was reportedly attacked when his cab reached the junction of Kok Cheung Street and Tai Tsuen Street. The passenger, a 31-year-old man surnamed Chong, had dozed off in the taxi during a journey from Yau Ma Tei. When the driver tried to wake him, Chong allegedly pulled a knife from his trousers and began swinging it. The cabby sustained a small cut to one of his fingers. Chong then fled towards nearby Li Tak Street, but the driver pursued him on foot and called the police. Officers equipped with helmets and tactical vests launched a search of the surrounding area. They eventually found the suspect in a hotel on Li Tak Street, roughly 200m from the scene of the altercation. A 40cm butcher knife was recovered from the hotel room. Police said Chong appeared to be heavily intoxicated at the time of his arrest. Both he and the taxi driver were taken to Kwong Wah Hospital in Yau Ma Tei for treatment. Chong has been arrested on suspicion of wounding. The case is being investigated by the Mong Kok district crime unit.
