Smart City Expo Kuala Lumpur to support Malaysia's 2040 Smart Nation agenda
He said SCEKL25 underscored Malaysia's leading role in advancing smart city development anchored by four strategic pillars, namely AI Cities, Sustainable and Resilient Cities, Digital Entrepreneurship and Economic Development and Community Empowerment through Digital Solutions.
'SCEKL25 represents a bold step forward in Malaysia's ambition to become a leading regional digital hub. It sets the stage for transformative conversations about the future of urban innovation,' he said in a statement.
Earlier today, Gobind officially launched the 100-day countdown to the expo, which takes place from Sept 17 to 19.
Themed 'AI Cities: Shaping Our Digital Future,' the expo highlights Malaysia's vision for smart, inclusive and sustainable cities.
Commenting further, Gobind said that with ASEAN's digital economy on the cusp of exponential growth, the expo offered a unique platform to showcase cutting-edge technologies and foster meaningful dialogue on how AI and digital transformation would shape the cities of tomorrow.
Meanwhile, in the same statement, Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) chief executive officer (CEO) Anuar Fariz Fadzil echoed the sentiment, calling SCEKL25 a catalyst for the smart city revolution in Southeast Asia.
He said the initiative reflected the nation's commitment to leading the region in building intelligent, inclusive, resilient and sustainable cities powered by AI, where technology empowers people and drives the next wave of urban transformation
The expo, co-organised by the MDEC and Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB) for the Ministry of Digital, will bring together global leaders, investors, tech innovators and policymakers to explore how AI and emerging technologies are reshaping urban life across ASEAN.

Digital Ministry drafting AI bill to combat deepfake videos
PETALING JAYA: The Digital Ministry is presently drafting an Artificial Intelligence (AI) bill to regulate the fast-evolving technology and combat deepfake videos as well as AI-related crimes, said Minister Gobind Singh Deo. 'The legislative draft is currently being refined through a comprehensive and inclusive engagement process involving various stakeholders. 'This approach is taken to ensure that the forthcoming legislation is holistic, balanced, and aligned with current technological developments as well as the nation's needs,' he said in a written parliamentary reply to Wong Chen (PH-Subang). Gobind added that the government has introduced the National AI Ethics and Governance Guidelines (AIGE), which outline seven core principles, including fairness, transparency, accountability and privacy protection, that must be observed by AI developers and users. Last month, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said said Malaysia is studying to develop AI legislation to address legal complexities in the digital age. She further said that she has formally written a letter to Gobind, proposing a meeting between the Legal Affairs Division (BHEUU) and the Digital Ministry to initiate a discussion on drafting new AI laws. According to Azalina, at present, Malaysia has no specific laws focused on AI because, unlike traditional technologies, AI operates on an entirely different platform.

PM Anwar: M'sia to continue engaging Cambodia, Thailand to propose peace process
Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim PUTRAJAYA (July 26): Malaysia will continue engaging with the leaders of Cambodia and Thailand to propose a peace process in response to the border conflict between the two countries, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. He said Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thailand's acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai had expressed appreciation for his initiative to propose a peace process and a ceasefire. 'There is still some exchange of fire (along the Thailand-Cambodia border). So I have asked Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan to liaise with the respective foreign ministries and, if possible, I will continue engaging with them myself – at least to halt the fighting,' he said. Anwar spoke to reporters after attending the 50th Prime Minister's Cup Debate Finals here today. Also present were Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek and Deputy Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir. Yesterday, Anwar said the government does not take lightly the ongoing conflict between Thailand and Cambodia and its impact on Malaysia.
