Parineeta To Re-Release In Theatres As Vidya Balan Marks 20 Years In Cinema: 'Emotional Moment'
Parineeta is coming back to the big screen. To mark 20 years since its original release, the 2005 romantic drama is being re-released in cinemas by PVR INOX. The restored version is part of a larger celebration that also highlights 20 years of Vidya Balan in the film industry, and 50 years of Vinod Chopra Films. The film will have an all India re-release in select theatres on August 29, exclusively for a week.
Based on Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay's 1914 Bengali novel, Parineeta was produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra and directed by Pradeep Sarkar. It featured Vidya Balan in her debut film role, alongside Saif Ali Khan and Sanjay Dutt. The film stood out for its music by Shantanu Moitra, its visual storytelling, and its Kolkata backdrop, which played a key role in shaping the film's mood and feel.
Speaking about the restored and remastered release, Vidhu Vinod Chopra shared, ' Parineeta has always held a special place in my heart. It's more than just a film—it's a journey of love, elegance, and soulful music. Every frame carries its own emotion, evolving with the story in a way that touches something deep within. And now, in the restored and remastered 8k version, the visuals are even richer and the beautiful locations even more beautiful. I am so proud of Pradeep Sarkar for the way he made this film, the way he captured the grandeur of old Kolkata and infused it with timeless beauty that still lingers."
Adding to this, Niharika Bijli , Lead Strategist at PVR INOX, said, 'We're delighted to bring Parineeta back to the cinemas. Today's audiences are seeking a chance to re-experience classics on the big screen. Parineeta is a timeless film—an elegant exploration of love, class, and the evolving role of women in early 20th-century India. It is a jewel in Vidhu Vinodh Chopra's rich cinematic legacy. We are excited to bring the film back to the big screen in a stunning restored print, inviting both new audiences and nostalgic fans to experience its cinematic splendour once again."
Vidya Balan , who made her debut with Parineeta, said, 'This is a very emotional moment for me. Parineeta is where it all began… Every frame of the film carries a piece of my heart, and I'll forever be grateful to Pradeep da (my Dada) and Mr. Vinod Chopra for believing in me. I owe so much of who I am as an actor to this film. Even after all these years, people remember the film, the songs, and how it made them feel. People say every frame in the film is like a painting…and that is Pradeep Sarkar's magic… So I do hope people and the new generation discover old-world love through Parineeta."
Saif Ali Khan said, ' Parineeta was a turning point for me—a film that allowed me to explore a quieter, more restrained side of my personality. It had elegance, depth, and a certain old-world charm that's rare to come by. Working with Vidya, Pradeep da, Vidhu Vinod Chopra, Sanju, and the entire team was truly special. I have very warm memories of the film, and it will always hold a meaningful place in my journey."
Sanjay Dutt shared, 'Parineeta will always hold a special place in my heart. It was a beautiful film, crafted with immense love and honesty. This was my second project with Vidhu Vinod Chopra, right after Munnabhai MBBS, which was also produced by him. Pradeep Sarkar had a distinct and sensitive vision, and I enjoyed portraying a character that was so understated and real. I have wonderful memories from the shoot, and I'm very happy that a new generation will now have the chance to experience it on the big screen." Sanjay Dutt began his association with Vinod Chopra Films in 2000 with Mission Kashmir and has since collaborated with the production house on multiple projects.

Kerala Story wins big ...but Kerala CM isn't happy Sudipto Sen's The Kerala Story took home top honours at the National Film Awards, winning in the Best Director and Best Cinematography categories. Producer Vipul Amrutlal Shah welcomed the recognition. 'It's been a very, very tough film to make, and to get this kind of recognition at the national level with two very prestigious awards is supremely exciting and satisfying,' he said. Director Sudipto told ANI , 'The journey of making The Kerala Story was a team effort and it is the team's victory. It was not made in Mumbai but we went to small villages and cities in Kerala and collected facts for the story. It is a different kind of feeling.' However, the decision to recognise the film has drawn criticism from Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. He expressed his disappointment, stating that the film promotes an ideology that, in his view, distorts facts and spreads communal discord. 'By honouring a film that spreads blatant misinformation with the clear intent of tarnishing Kerala's image and sowing seeds of communal hatred, the jury of the National Film Awards has lent legitimacy to a narrative rooted in the divisive ideology of the Sangh Parivar,' he wrote on X.

...You have to consider each film for impact, box office and social relevance, says jury head - and Swades director
The 71st National Film Awards have been announced and, in true tradition, not without triggering conversations about who's deserving and who's not. Pre-empting the usual rounds of speculation, jury chairperson started the announcement with a disclaimer in his opening remarks 'You can't compare two talents and two films, but we are forced to do that and that's when we make our selection. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now We applaud all films, but we salute these chosen ones.' Gowariker addressed the complexity of the selection process. He emphasised that the primary criterion for choosing winners was the impact of the film on audiences. He said, 'When it comes to the National Film Awards, it is definitely a difficult task. It needs a lot of deliberation, a lot of discussion. You have to consider each film for its impact, box office performance, and societal relevance especially across different languages. ' Asked specifically about the inclusion of The Kerala Story and whether the decision was unanimous, he responded, 'All our deliberations have been unanimous. Through our deliberations, through our discussions — until the jury arrived on the same plane with each other — we did not select the film. It has been unanimous.' Vidya Balan: 'I was a jinxed actor, Vidhu Vinod Chopra asked me to get a nose surgery done and...'
Balan added, 'Then I worked with Dada (Pradeep Sarkar) on a music video for Euphoria. We shot the video, and everything was great, but suddenly I heard that the music video might not get released.' read more Vidya Balan has had a topsy turvy career in these nearly two decades. With Parineeta and Lage Raho Munna Bhai, she proved to be a solid and reliable performer that had the charm and the screen presence to pull the characters off. With Heyy Babyy and Kismat Konnection, she went off the rails, only resurrecting herself with the delicious Ishqiya, the rollicking The Dirty Picture, and the gripping Kahaani. Oh yes, in between, there was this film called Bhool Bhulaiyaa! In an interview with Filmfare for completing two decades in Hindi cinema, the actress revealed, 'The start of my career was quite rocky, and I couldn't land a role. One day a journalist came to my house and told me that he was willing to publish a fake story saying that I have been signed by some big banners, which will help break the jinx, but I said no. I was this jinxed actor even before becoming an actor. So after all these films, which never happened, I met Pradeep during an ad film.' STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Balan added, 'Then I worked with Dada (Pradeep) on a music video for Euphoria. We shot the video, and everything was great, but suddenly I heard that the music video might not get released. Now I definitely thought I was jinxed, but then it somehow got fixed, and the song came out.' On meeting Vidhu Vinod Chopra I went to the 20th anniversary of Parineeta, and I spoke to Mr Chopra (Vidhu Vinod Chopra) and to Dada's wife. It's unbelievable that he is not there anymore. He believed in me even when I didn't believe in myself. I remember that Mr Chopra had told me to get a surgery for my nose, and I got so scared. I came home and called Dada and asked him to save me because I didn't want to change anything. He told people on the sets of Parineeta, 'If Vidya works, then this film will work.'" On rejecting Pradeep Sarkar's Laga Chunari Mein Daag He was definitely miffed with me for saying no to Laaga Chunari Mein Daag. He didn't speak to me for 2 to 3 years. I think he felt that whatever the film was, I should have had faith in him, that he would make something out of it. For some reason that story never resonated with me, and I found the story a bit dated. Saying no to Dada was very tough, and I used to call him every day to know how he was. It's so sad that someone who I feel so much gratitude towards, I didn't manage to keep in touch with.
