
Egyptair Boosts Fleet with Six More A350-900 Jets
The announcement, made at the Paris Air Show on 18 June 2025, follows the airline's earlier acquisition of ten A350‑900s at the Dubai Air Show in 2023. Egyptair's increasing reliance on the A350 underscores its focus on modernising its international fleet with fuel-efficient, long‑range aircraft.
A vital component of the airline's strategy is sustainability. Powered by Rolls‑Royce Trent XWB engines, the A350‑900 consumes approximately 25 percent less fuel than older wide‑body models and emits proportionally fewer CO₂ emissions. Its Airspace cabin offers passengers enhanced comfort with wider seats, higher ceilings, and ambient lighting, all of which align with growing expectations for premium long-haul travel.

Adel highlighted the broader impact of this investment, stating it will 'contribute to Egypt's broader efforts to promote more sustainable air transport'. Airbus Executive Vice‑President Sales Benoît de Saint-Exupéry added that the second A350 order is testament to the aircraft's value as a cornerstone in the carrier's growth and decarbonisation plan.
The A350‑900, certified to operate with up to 50 percent sustainable aviation fuel and targeted to be 100 percent SAF‑capable by 2030, provides a critical tool for airlines pushing to lower their carbon footprints.
Industry analysts note that global demand for newer, more efficient wide‑body aircraft remains strong, with Airbus reducing supply‑chain headwinds by around 40 percent in early 2025. With over 1,390 A350s on order across 60 airlines as of May 2025, the A350 program has become integral to carriers renewing their long‑haul fleets.
Cairo International Airport will serve as the operational base for Egyptair's A350 deployment. The aircraft's 9,700‑nautical‑mile range unlocks new nonstop routes to North America and Asia, while improving efficiency on existing services. This expansion mirrors trends among global carriers embracing larger, eco‑efficient aircraft to meet both strategic growth objectives and environmental targets.
The airline's current long‑haul fleet includes Airbus A330‑200s, A330‑300s, Boeing 777‑300ERs and 787‑9 Dreamliners. The staged introduction of the new A350s, expected to begin later this year, will gradually transform Egyptair's fleet mix.
As the Paris Air Show concludes, Airbus has secured multiple major orders including freighter deals with MNG Airlines and continuing negotiations with other carriers such as AirAsia, signalling a robust market for next‑generation aircraft as airlines seek both growth and sustainability.

Each Business seat includes a 17.3-inch 4K screen, Bluetooth headphone pairing and wireless charging. US and EU agree on 15% tariff deal to avert a bigger trade war
The United States struck a framework trade agreement with the European Union on Sunday, imposing a 15% import tariff on most EU goods, half the threatened rate, and averting a bigger trade war between two allies that account for almost a third of global trade. US President Donald Trump and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced the deal at Trump's luxury golf course in western Scotland after an hour-long meeting that pushed the hard-fought deal over the line. "I think this is the biggest deal ever made," Trump told reporters, lauding EU plans to invest some $600 billion in the United States and dramatically increase its purchases of US energy and military equipment. Trump said the deal, which tops a $550 billion deal signed with Japan last week, would expand ties between the trans-Atlantic powers after years of what he called unfair treatment of US exporters. Von der Leyen, describing Trump as a tough negotiator, said the 15% tariff applied "across the board", later telling reporters it was "the best we could get." "We have a trade deal between the two largest economies in the world, and it's a big deal. It's a huge deal. It will bring stability. It will bring predictability," she said. The deal, which Trump said calls for $750 billion of EU purchases of US energy in coming years and "hundreds of billions of dollars" of arms purchases, likely spells good news for a host of EU companies, including Airbus, Mercedes-Benz and Novo Nordisk, if all the details hold. The baseline 15% tariff will still be seen by many in Europe as too high, compared with Europe's initial hopes to secure a zero-for-zero tariff deal, though it is better than the threatened 30% rate. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz welcomed the deal, saying it averted a trade conflict that would have hit Germany's export-driven economy and its large auto sector hard. German carmakers, VW, Mercedes and BMW were some of the hardest hit by the 27.5% US tariff on car and parts imports now in place. The euro rose around 0.2% against the dollar, sterling and yen within an hour of the deal's being announced. Mirror of Japan deal The deal mirrors key parts of the framework accord reached by the US with Japan last week, but like that deal, it leaves many questions open, including tariff rates on spirits, a highly charged topic for many on both sides of the Atlantic. Carsten Nickel, deputy director of research at Teneo, said it was "merely a high-level, political agreement" that could not replace a carefully hammered out trade deal: "This, in turn, creates the risk of different interpretations along the way, as seen immediately after the conclusion of the U.S.-Japan deal." "We are agreeing that the tariff ... for automobiles and everything else will be a straight-across tariff of 15%," Trump said, but he quickly added that a 50% US tariff on steel and aluminium will remain in place. Von der Leyen said that tariffs would be cut and replaced with a quota system. Von der Leyen said the rate also applied to semiconductors and pharmaceuticals, and there would be no tariffs from either side on aircraft and aircraft parts, certain chemicals, certain generic drugs, semiconductor equipment, some agricultural products, natural resources and critical raw materials. Trump appeared to suggest pharmaceuticals would not be covered, leaving some question about that aspect of the deal. No fact sheet was immediately issued by the White House. "We will keep working to add more products to this list," von der Leyen said, adding that spirits were still under discussion. The deal will be sold as a triumph for Trump, who is seeking to reorder the global economy and reduce decades-old US trade deficits, and has already reached similar framework accords with Britain, Japan, Indonesia and Vietnam, although his administration has not hit its goal of "90 deals in 90 days." Arriving in Scotland, Trump said the EU wanted "to make a deal very badly" and said, as he met von der Leyen, that Europe had been "very unfair to the United States".

Airlines in Middle East invited to test alternative to GPS navigation system
Airlines and governments in the Middle East have been invited to take part in the ongoing testing a new navigation technology that some experts say is significantly more reliable than Global Positioning Satellite systems. SandboxAQ, a developer of products involving quantum technology and artificial intelligence, recently heralded the 'commercially available prototype' of the technology they're calling AQNav. This comes as GPS, the standard navigation system around the world, has become a victim of its own success, and is increasingly vulnerable to GPS jamming which can renders the navigation assistance unusable. GPS jamming − also known as GPS spoofing − became a prominent problem in June during the air war between Israel and Iran. Smartphone users across the Middle East reported anomalies with their GPS locations, which were wildly inaccurate. GPS has gained immense popularity thanks to the ease it can be incorporated into technology. But this ubiquity is becoming a growing vulnerability. SandboxAQ recently announced that Acubed, an Airbus company, completed what they're describing as 'rigorous real-world testing' of the touted GPS alternative, AQNav, which uses the magnetic field of the Earth along with quantum sensors that pick up the magnetic signals with the help of special AI software. Tests lasted five months and involved more than 100 flights that took place across 'diverse geographies and conditions'. According to SandboxAQ and Acubed, the test results show that AQNav 'consistently beat' the US Federal Aviation Administration's en route navigation standards. 'Pilots need to be able to trust their navigation systems,' Luca Ferrara, general manager for SandboxAQ's navigation business unit, told The National. 'When they can trust it, they're less stressed, they have less of a cognitive workload and they don't have worry about dealing with GPS loss,' he explained. SandboxAQ says that AQNav is rooted in and inspired by nature, and utilises the Earth's magnetic field, similar to how birds and other animals use it to navigate. That approach, combined with Sandbox AQ's proprietary AI software and use of hardware, gives it significantly more resilience and reliability compared to GPS, Mr Ferrara said. SandboxAQ also points out that unlike GPS, it doesn't connect to the internet, cloud or satellites. In the recent tests from Acubed, AQNav logged more than 44,000km, 'surpassing the Earth's circumference, without relying on GPS'. Mr Ferrara said more testing will now take place with hopes of eventually readying the system to be used on commercial airlines. SandboxAQ hopes to gain more insight into how to best position the magnetic censors used by the system on various aircraft, along with other details. Testing will help establish whether users would transfer navigation data to an existing computer on the plane, or a separate computer not connected to the internet or any network on board. This system is known as air-gapping, which is broadly viewed as more secure. 'Do we want it to pipe the data into the flight management computer or do we want it to go in an air-gapped way?' asked Mr Ferrara. He said Sandbox AQ currently has contracts with the US Air Force, and he expects the new navigation technology to first be adopted by defence and national security agencies, and then commercial entities. Through more testing, followed by a 'constructive dialogue' with aviation regulators around the world, Mr Ferrara said there's hope that commercial airlines will also be able to implement the system. Given the Middle East's increasingly strong presence in commercial aviation, with countries like the UAE playing a crucial role with international travel, it makes sense to push for testing among the region's airlines. 'We're looking for forward-leaning partners in the aerospace sector within the Gulf region to collaborate with,' Mr Ferrara said. He said the company is in discussions with several companies, and hopes to continue with those efforts given the Middle East's tourism footprint and globally recognised airline brands.
