Former Reds boss thrilled with new role
Not offered a contract extension by Adelaide after five years as the club's A-League mentor, Veart's services were quickly up snapped by Football Australia, with his proven ability to develop and nurture young talent – including former Reds prodigy Nestory Irankunda – a key factor in his appointment.
'I (was) quite outspoken during my time at Adelaide about providing opportunities for young players,' Veart said on Monday from the Emerging Socceroos Championships in Bundoora.
'Before I was an A-League coach, I worked in this (youth) system for eight or nine years, working with those young players, so it's something that I'm very passionate about.
'I'm also very passionate about our national teams as well.'
Veart, 55, said his new role had come at the 'right time' for him.
'I spent a long time in the A-League, and I started to fatigue with that a little bit, so this is a refresh for myself, and I'm really looking forward to the years ahead,' he said.
'The difference is now I'm working for tomorrow with young players. When you're working with senior players, it's all about the result and getting the result today.
'Now it's about providing these players with a strong platform to go on and have successful careers, and it's about giving them guidance and direction to what it takes to make that high level.'
The former Socceroos striker was thrilled that several A-League clubs were giving younger players opportunities to shine.
'We've always said that up to 16-17 years of age, Australia does exceptionally well, and we needed to fix that gap from 17 to 20, and I think the A-League has done that, especially in the past 18 months,' Veart said.
'It's providing more opportunities for our younger players to get that exposure so they can develop quicker.'

Richmond's No.1 draft pick Sam Lalor might need surgery and Nik Cox's concussion history has also ended his AFL season. Lalor re-injured his left hamstring only a couple of minutes into his return on Saturday against Geelong, with the Tigers confirming on Monday his season is over. The AFL's concussion panel, which last month recommended West Coast defender Jeremy McGovern should retire on medical grounds, gave Cox hope he will resume his playing career. "We are all devastated for the young man, and I am sure our fans are too," Richmond high-performance manager Ben Serpell said. "The injury mechanism here for Sam this time was very different to his original injury mechanism. "He sustained the injury in a tackle. I think anyone who throws their body at the game as he did, and credit to him for doing that, is going to put their body at some risk irrespective of their injury history." Given Lalor's terrible injury history, he might undergo surgery on the hamstring. "We are a bit concerned about the integrity of the hamstring structure," Serpell said. "As part of that we will consult a few surgeons over the next little while to see if there is some surgical intervention available for us." Meanwhile, Cox is upbeat about his future after being told by the concussion panel he can resume his AFL career. "While I'm disappointed that I won't return to the field for the remainder of the 2025 season, this time away from the game will be used to focus fully on my health, recovery, and building the strongest possible foundation heading into pre-season," Cox said. "I've learned a lot about myself over the past few months, and I'm more motivated than ever to get back to doing what I love. "My focus now is on continuing to work closely with specialists and the club to make sure I'm in the best place physically and mentally to return to football."

'Lucky' Adelaide goalsneak sent for surgery
Adelaide forward Josh Rachele has been sent for knee surgery, with an unclear timeline on when he'll play again. The 22-year-old has been cleared of serious ligament damage in his left knee injured in Sunday's win over Melbourne. But scans revealed Rachele tore a tissue at the back of the knee joint and also suffered bone bruising when landing awkwardly in a marking contest. The Crows will have a better understanding of Rachele's outlook post-surgery, the club's fitness boss Darren Burgess says. "He'll have surgery to elevate the bone in his knee and likely be in a brace for a few weeks," Burgess said. "Once out of the brace, we'll progress his training loads from there." Rachele was relieved when allayed of fears he'd torn his anterior cruciate ligament or posterior cruciate ligament. "Worst case scenario, your head goes to that (ACL) instantly, so I am very lucky ... structurally the ACL and PCL are all good," he told reporters. Rachele had been in the midst of a career-best scoring season, kicking 25 goals from a dozen games. But he'll likely be absent beyond third-placed Adelaide's season-shaping stretch against the Western Bulldogs, Gold Coast, Port Adelaide and Hawthorn.
