Ohio State men's hockey releases 2025-2026 nonconference schedule

USA Today21-06-2025

The Ohio State men's hockey team surprised a lot of people with their unexpectedly high level of play this past season. The Buckeyes lost a lot of key players but found a way to plug in more talent and shock a lot of people by making it to the Big Ten Tournament Championship Game en route to a berth in the NCAA Tournament.
Things didn't end all that well on the national scale in the postseason, but it was still an overachieving year in which OSU went 24-12-2 overall and finished third in the League with a 14-9-1 record. It was a fun season, one that it hopes it can build momentum off of and take it into this upcoming season.
And while we won't know the Big Ten schedule until a future date, the program did announce its nonconference schedule this past week, so if you are an ice hockey fan, and one that loves to watch the Scarlet and Gray, you've got something to look forward to.
All told, the Buckeyes will host five nonconference games and go on the road for another five. Here's how it all plays out prior to hitting the conference for Big Ten play:
2025-26 Ohio State Men's Hockey
Oct. 10-11 – Northern MichiganOct. 17-18 – at UConnOct. 24-25 – Sacred Heart UniversityNov. 28-29 – at Arizona State UniversityJan. 2 – Bowling GreenJan. 3 – at Bowling Green
It won't be an easy road for Ohio State -- it never is in the Big Ten -- but hopefully, the Buckeyes can win their fair share of these nonconference games to prepare for what's to come in conference and beyond. And while we are at it, the deadline to renew season tickets is 4 p.m. ET June 30, and new season ticket packages are available now. For more information or to view available seating options, go online or contact the Ohio State Athletics Ticket Office by calling 1-800-GOBUCKS or by emailing athletic.tix@osu.edu. Other ticket options including groups, miniplans, and single games, will be available for purchase later this summer.

Angler battles 4-foot behemoth for 45 minutes off NC coast — and shatters record

An angler spent 45 minutes off the coast of North Carolina reeling in a fish as his buddies kept hauling in their catches, making comments about how long it was taking him. They didn't know the fish on his line was a North Carolina state record. Warren Poirier of Charles City, Virginia, shattered the previous state record for Almaco Jack by a whopping 23 pounds with his fish weighing over 56 pounds and measuring 46 inches in length, the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality's Division of Marine Fisheries announced June 27. 'We were finishing up the day, and I had told the captain the day before that if we had the time, I wanted to catch a big jack because I wanted to mount one,' Poirier told McClatchy News. On June 7, Poirier set out with Captain James Bowman and other anglers from a Hatteras marina in the Outer Banks. Upon Poirier's request, Bowman took them to another spot late in the day, and one cast from Poirier's line was all it took. 'I jigged the bait off the bottom, this fish hit it, and it took 45 minutes to get him in because it was light tackle, light rod and spinning reel,' Poirier said. 'He almost took all the line off the reel.' He said his buddies were giving him a hard time as they caught multiple fish apiece in the time it took him to bring the big fish into the boat. By the time he hauled it into the boat, he was exhausted, and everyone was celebrating. But they didn't realize just how significant the catch was until they brought it into the marina. 'We put the fish out on the dock and one of the other captains came up and said 'Oh my God, that's the biggest Almaco Jack I've ever seen in my life,'' he recalled. They started looking up the state record and realized Poirier's fish easily beat the 33-pound record set in 2024. 'Ironically it worked out, because I wanted a big jack,' he said. He added Bowman was thrilled and said he'd take care of the fish as officials worked to certify the record. 'He wanted me to get that record as much as I did,' Poirier said. He thanked the captain in a Facebook post, saying he made it happen. Poirier caught the record jack with a Shimano Trevala rod and Saltist 5000 reel with 80-pound braid, according to the state marine fisheries division.

Nebraska football recruit Devin Jackson to announce commitment on July 3

A four-star defensive back has set his commitment date. Devin Jackson will make the official announcement on Thursday, July 3, at 11:00 a.m. CT in his hometown of Winter Garden, FL. Jackson will decide among five finalists: Nebraska, Florida, LSU, Miami, and Oregon. He initially committed to Florida in July 2024 before he decommitted in mid-April, becoming the second defensive back in the 2026 class to do so after position coach Will Harris left Florida to join Miami. Jackson is listed as the No. 14-ranked safety and the No. 19-ranked prospect in the state of Florida according to the On3 recruiting ratings. Nebraska's class of 2026 holds nine commitments and is ranked No. 52 nationally and No. 18 in the Big Ten. The highest-ranked recruit in the class is cornerback Danny Odem out of Orlando, FL. Jackson would be the second defensive back and the second-highest-ranked recruit should he commit to the Huskers on July 3. Nebraska appears to be facing an uphill battle for the prospect as Oregon is viewed as the frontrunner, with his former team in Florida also still very much in the running.
