Creole tomato season is in full force in New Orleans, so now's the time to enjoy these ruby red treasures whenever you spot them on menus.
Why it matters: Turkey and the Wolf has a Creole tomato sandwich special right now that's worth getting your hands on before the moment passes you by.
Zoom in: Creole tomato season technically runs from about May until the first freeze, according to Country Roads Magazine, but the bounty is at its most celebrated at midsummer.
(That might be thanks to the Creole Tomato Festival, which just took place in early June.)
The intrigue: There's technically no clear definition of what makes a Creole tomato, according to the LSU AgCenter.
Though the university put out a "Creole" tomato variety in 1969, growers in St. Bernard and Plaquemines parishes, who typically use the title, don't usually use that seed.
"Today, Creole has become a marketing term for any tomato grown in Louisiana," LSU says.
Dig in: At Turkey and the Wolf, the tomatoes that end up on its seasonal sandwich are sliced thick and layered on fat slices of Texas toast.
The juicy stack is laden with fresh basil leaves and dill, and when you take a bite, sunflower seeds ooze out on waves of Duke's mayonnaise.
Heaven.

Restaurateurs Michelle Vanderwalker and Sean Umstead recently announced that they will open a 'community-driven sports bar for everyone,' named E.O. Athletic Club, this fall at 341 West Main Street. The focus of E.O. Athletic Club will be fostering community through sports. As with Vanderwalker and Umstead's other projects, everyone is encouraged to visit — NFL fans, WNBA fans, ultimate frisbee fans, Olympic curling fans, and even Tar Heel fans in the Duke-centric town. The owners plan to host watch parties, theme nights, and competition games. Basically, this will not be your average bro-centric sports bar. E.O. Athletic Club will serve Northeast-inspired pizzas, loaded baked potatoes, wings, sandwiches, salads, and other high-end bar fare. The establishment will be open for lunch, dinner, and late-night takeout. The bar is named for biologist E. O. Wilson, who is the subject of the PBS film E.O. Wilson – Of Ants and Men. 'The name came from a conversation Michelle and I had about a documentary on E.O. Wilson,' says Umstead, 'Which said that nothing shows human desire for belonging better than sports and sports fandom. We really want to embrace the community and togetherness that comes so naturally from sports.' E.O. Wilson will join the growing trend of modern sports bars leaning away from the archetype of macho sports bars with sticky floors. Embrace the hate? Keep Austin weird? Sometimes, things just get weird on their own and something that seems offensive on the outside actually was done out of love. That, of course, does not always translate well, and people not in on the joke might not see the words being used as playful. He was the only white kid who worked there who lasted and he worked alongside some Haitian women who cooked the burgers on the grill. The women spoke Creole and almost no English. My son knew a little Creole due to a past relationship and had a warm relationship with the women, even though he and they could not communicate much. But when a phrase is used with love, it becomes more of an inside term of endearment. JewBoy Sub Shop, an Austin icon, has a similar origin story. It's time to get meshugganah. Welcome to the JewBoy Sub Shop. We are a sandwich shop in Austin, Texas, inspired by both Border and Reform Jewish Culture. Hope you're hungry," it says. ("Meshugganah" is transliterated Yiddish for "crazy.") The menu is decidedly not kosher, or even kosher-style, as it offers meat served with cheese, as well as pork products. JewBoy Sub Shop's owner does explain the restaurant's name on its website. "Mo Pittle, born in Cleveland with ties to Philadelphia and Washington, DC, was raised in El Paso, Texas. Not the first place you'd expect to find Jews, but they're there. Growing up among the Homeboys, he became affectionately known as 'El JewBoy,'" he wrote. "A few decades later, it now describes the subs you're about to consume," he said. "A perfect mix of Border and Jewish culture. So open your mind, but more importantly, open your mouth, because if you know Jewish people, or you know Latinos, you know you're about to feast," Pittle recently posted the decision to close his questionably named sub shop. "All roads eventually come to an end," he posted on Facebook. "For our Sub Shop, their road will come to an end this Sunday, July 20th. Our lease is up and other opportunities call. "We can't express our gratitude enough to all our customers and employees who supported our journey these last 4 and a half years. Come in this week and for sure on Sunday when we'll have food and drink specials until we sell it all." The two JewBoy Slider locations are unaffected by the shutdown of the sub shop. Whether Pittle owns all three locations is unclear. "Gone but not forgotten is the theme here, as many of our menu items, or versions of them, will make their way into our other locations," he posted. "Not just currently, but for the entirety of my 20+ years living here. I hope you eventually find a new location (preferably down south). Until then, at least we still have the burgers." Ben Glasthal shared similar emotions. "That is a gut punch, I love the sub shop. If I wasn't down in far south Austin I'd be there a few times a week. Every year on Independence Day, we fire up the grill, watch fireworks, and maybe revisit a few action-packed partriotic flicks. But if you really want to feel that red, white, and blue rush, go back to 1987, when G.I. Joe: The Movie kicked off with a sequence so over-the-top patriotic it makes The Avengers look like pacifists. Cobra tried to blow up the Statue of Liberty, and the Joes shut them down hard. The film's opening throws you straight into the chaos. Cobra attacks a ceremony on Ellis Island, only to find the event guarded by G.I. Joe. As the Joes defend the Statue of Liberty, Cobra Commander plants a bomb at the statue's base. Joe air power holds off Cobra's vehicles while Duke, via jet pack, carries the Commander's bomb to the Cobra airship, which is gloriously destroyed when the bomb explodes. The Joes pose victorious on Lady Liberty's crown. It's so earnestly epic and ridiculous you can't help but smile. The final sequence where Duke is flying the American Flag up to the top of the Statue of Liberty will always bring a tear to my eye. That introd is a pure injection of animated heroism and musical adrenaline that still slaps decades later. So, this 4th of July, maybe take a moment to remember that when Cobra tried to wipe out one of America's greatest symbols... G.I. Joe was there. Yo Joe! Enjoy the video below, and be warned, the music might just stick in your head the rest of the day. Stay safe out there and happy Independence Day!
