Creole tomato season is in full force in New Orleans, so now's the time to enjoy these ruby red treasures whenever you spot them on menus. Why it matters: Turkey and the Wolf has a Creole tomato sandwich special right now that's worth getting your hands on before the moment passes you by. Zoom in: Creole tomato season technically runs from about May until the first freeze, according to Country Roads Magazine, but the bounty is at its most celebrated at midsummer. (That might be thanks to the Creole Tomato Festival, which just took place in early June.) The intrigue: There's technically no clear definition of what makes a Creole tomato, according to the LSU AgCenter. Though the university put out a "Creole" tomato variety in 1969, growers in St. Bernard and Plaquemines parishes, who typically use the title, don't usually use that seed. "Today, Creole has become a marketing term for any tomato grown in Louisiana," LSU says. Dig in: At Turkey and the Wolf, the tomatoes that end up on its seasonal sandwich are sliced thick and layered on fat slices of Texas toast. The juicy stack is laden with fresh basil leaves and dill, and when you take a bite, sunflower seeds ooze out on waves of Duke's mayonnaise. Heaven.

Man shot on St. Claude Avenue
NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — A man was shot on St. Claude Avenue Saturday, June 7. According to the New Orleans Police Department, two men were having an argument when one of them struck a car window with a hammer. The other opened fire, hitting him twice. Second Harvest Food Bank launches ‘Summer Food Service Program' in Greater New Orleans
NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — Second Harvest Food Bank kicked off its Summer Food Service Program on Monday morning. The food bank, located on Edwards Avenue, aims to provide meals during the summer months that students are usually provided during the school year. Breakfasts and lunches are prepared for more than 3,000 children in the area. New Orleans' French Market will celebrate annual Creole Tomato Festival John Sillars, Chief Strategy Officer at Second Harvest, says that the schools are helping to cover costs of the feeding program. However, the New Orleans community also plays a large part in helping the program come to life. 'This is a program where we do get compensated partially by the Department of Education, but we do need community support to keep it going because it doesn't cover the entire cost,' Sillars said. 'There is a fundraising gap that we need, and we depend on the community to close that gap.' There are currently 72 summer feeding sites in South Louisiana, the majority being in the Greater New Orleans area. City of New Orleans offering an amnesty program for past-due parking, traffic tickets
NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — The City of New Orleans will offer a limited time amnesty program for past-due parking and traffic camera tickets. According to city officials, the program will allow people to pay their tickets without late fees until Aug. 31. Anyone with a parking ticket more than 30 days old or a traffic camera ticket more than 60 days old that was issued before June 1 can have late fees waived. New Orleans Business and External Services Deputy CAO Austin Wilty said the city is owed over $180 million in unpaid tickets. New Orleans' French Market will celebrate annual Creole Tomato Festival The program is open to everyone, regardless of where they live. 'This is about meeting people where they are,' said Mayor LaToya Cantrell. 'By removing late fees, we're making it easier for people to take care of what they owe and move forward; without added stress or penalties.' The city has done this program before in 2019 and 2022.
