CM will launch distribution of new ration cards on July 14, says Uttam

Hans India2 days ago
Hyderabad: State Irrigation, Food & Civil Supplies Minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy announced on Wednesday that the state government would begin distributing new ration cards from July 14 at Tirumalagiri in Tungaturthi constituency. The programme will be formally inaugurated by Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, with Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka also participating. The Minister directed collectors to complete verification of all eligible applications by July 13 to ensure no deserving family was left out. Uttam Kumar Reddy stressed that the beneficiary selection process must be transparent and corruption-free.
'The government's focus is to ensure that every eligible person gets a ration card without any discrimination,' he said, adding that review meetings will now be held twice a month to maintain strict oversight.
Uttam Kumar Reddy explained that Telangana's flagship free fine rice scheme delivers 6 kg of rice per person every month to nearly 3.10 crore people, about 84% of the population, through fair price shops, at a cost of over Rs 13,000 crore annually. In June, July, and August, the state provided three months' worth of rations at once to ensure uninterrupted supply, distributing 18 kg per person, 105 kg per Antyodaya family, and 30 kg per Annapurna family.
He sharply criticised the previous BRS government for neglecting food security and ration card enrolment. 'At the time of Telangana's formation in 2014, there were 89.73 lakh white ration cards, but the BRS added only around 49,000 new cards, mostly during by-elections, ignoring lakhs of families,' Uttam Kumar Reddy pointed out. He said the Congress government had received lakhs of new applications and was addressing them in a mission-driven manner.

India-US trade deal: Rahul Gandhi reacts to Piyush Goyal's 'national interest' remark; claims PM Modi to 'meekly bow' before Trump

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi NEW DELHI: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday claimed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi would "meekly bow" to US President Donald Trump , as New Delhi weighs its interests amid ongoing trade talks with Washington. Gandhi's remark was a reaction to Commerce and Industry minister Piyush Goyal 's statement, where he said: "We are not working towards any specific deadlines, we are working towards national interest". Trump has set July 9 as the deadline for trade agreements. "Piyush Goyal can beat his chest all he wants, mark my words, Modi will meekly bow to the Trump tariff deadline," Gandhi wrote on X. The Congerss leader's post on X India will enter into a trade agreement with the US only if its interests are protected and it is able to sustain a tariff advantage over its competitors, while prioritising the interests of farmers, commerce and industry minister Piyush Goyal said Friday. Trump had imposed reciprocal tariffs on nearly 100 countries but agreed to a 90-day pause that is to end Tuesday. India was slapped with 26 per cent reciprocal tariffs. There is uncertainty over whether India and US can agree to an early tranche or a mini deal before that even as a comprehensive bilateral trade agreement is negotiated by Fall (Sept-Oct) after a meeting between Trump and PM Modi. For India, lowering tariffs on farm products, such as maize and soybean, as well as dairy products is a concern. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Is your tinnitus getting worse? "Farmers' interest is always paramount for Modi government. In any negotiation we have done, you have seen UK, Australia, Mauritius, EFTA and UAE agreements, India's farmers have been protected." The government has refrained from offering concessions in major agricultural products, but for US, it is the main focus. While some government officials said US demands were not very clear, for India, Goyal said Indian expectations for duty concessions in labour-intensive sectors were the focus of the trade deal. India was hoping for duty concessions in leather, footwear, textiles and some auto parts in return for reducing levies on automobiles and American whiskey.

‘National Herald' case: Congress hits back at ED over allegations

New Delhi: Senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, representing Congress leader Sonia Gandhi, raised serious questions over the Enforcement Directorate's (ED) probe into the 'National Herald' case. Arguing before a Delhi court on Friday, Singhvi described the case as 'really strange' and 'unprecedented,' claiming that it involves allegations of money laundering without any tangible assets involved. 'This is an alleged case of money laundering without any property, without any use or projection of property. It is really strange—more than strange,' Singhvi told the court, criticizing the foundation of the ED's accusations. His remarks followed arguments made by Additional Solicitor General SV Raju, who presented the charge-sheet on behalf of the ED. Raju had claimed that the Gandhi family were the "beneficial owners" of the company Young Indian and accused them of conspiracy and money laundering in connection with the alleged fraudulent acquisition of assets worth over ₹2,000 crore belonging to Associated Journals Limited (AJL). The ED has named Sonia and Rahul Gandhi, the late Congress leaders Motilal Vora and Oscar Fernandes, as well as Suman Dubey, Sam Pitroda, and private companies Young Indian and Dotex Merchandise Pvt Ltd in the case. The charges are filed under Sections 3 and 4 of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), which deal with money laundering and its punishment. According to the ED, the Gandhi family held 76% shares in Young Indian and used a ₹90 crore loan to fraudulently take control of AJL's vast assets. However, Singhvi rebutted this, claiming the transaction was a legitimate move to make AJL debt-free. 'Every company has the right under the law to clear its debts through various methods,' Singhvi argued. 'You take a loan and transfer it to another entity, thereby making the original company debt-free.' He also emphasized that Young Indian is a not-for-profit company, which, by law, cannot distribute dividends, salaries, bonuses, or any other financial benefits to its shareholders. 'This is a key point that contradicts the ED's narrative of personal enrichment,' Singhvi noted. Furthermore, Singhvi accused the ED of acting on political motivations. He alleged that the agency had remained inactive for years and only revived the probe based on a private complaint driven by political interests. Earlier, on July 3, Raju argued that the Gandhi family had acquired full control of Young Indian after the passing of other shareholders, making them the ultimate beneficiaries. The ED's charge-sheet names multiple individuals and entities, including Sunil Bhandari and Dotex Merchandise Pvt Ltd, apart from the Gandhis and senior Congress figures. The case remains under judicial review, with the court yet to decide on the cognizance of the charge-sheet.

TNCC chief's pitch to include PMK in alliance triggers dissent in Congress

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) president K Selvaperunthagai's remarks in an interview to TNIE on Friday, reiterating his preference for the inclusion of PMK in the DMK-led INDIA bloc for the 2026 Assembly polls, have drawn sharp criticism from within the Congress and its ally VCK. While Congress MP Manickam Tagore questioned how a party that has consistently supported Prime Minister Narendra Modi since 2014 could be considered for alliance, VCK deputy general secretary and Villupuram MP D Ravikumar urged the AICC to clarify whether Selvaperunthagai's statement had the approval of the party's high command. He also said the TNCC chief's remarks gave the impression that the current DMK-led alliance lacked strength. In the interview, Selvaperunthagai said his view stemmed from the need for greater unity between Dalits and OBCs. On VCK's opposition to such an alliance, he said the VCK has the right to decide what is good for the party. Tagore, in a post on X, said without naming Selvaperunthagai, 'How can you want a party that stood with Modi since 2014 to be your ally? Why hurt those who have stood with us and support Rahul Gandhi in every battle?' 'This cannot be a party decision- it appears to be purely personal,' he said, with a hashtag 'StandWithTrueFriends'.
