Assam Police's Crackdown To Enforce Beef Ban, Several Detained
In a state-wide crackdown, Assam Police have launched a coordinated operation against the illegal sale of beef, conducting simultaneous raids across multiple districts under the Assam Cattle Preservation Act, 2021. The Act prohibits the slaughter of cattle and the sale of beef near temples and in Hindu-majority areas.
Raids were carried out in Guwahati, Nagaon, Charaideo, Kokrajhar, South Kamrup, and Dibrugarh, resulting in the seizure of large quantities of both cooked and raw meat suspected to be beef. In Kokrajhar alone, four hotels were searched by police teams.
According to police sources, several people have been arrested.
According to reports, several kilograms of beef were recovered, and multiple individuals were detained, while several others managed to flee during the operations at various locations.
More than 70 kg of beef was recovered from hostels in Guwahati's Katahbari area today during a raid by the Garchok police, police sources added
This enforcement drive comes in the wake of recent communal tensions during Eid, during which 16 people were arrested for allegedly slaughtering cattle illegally. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has reiterated that while religious freedoms are protected, any violation of the law will invite strict action.

Trichy: Senior DMK leaders and their allies on Saturday squarely blamed the Modi govt for the death of 84-year-old tribal rights activist Stan Swamy in a Jharkhand prison in 2021, calling it an injustice that cannot be undone. "The BJP falsely accused him of plotting to kill Modi. His laptop was hacked to fabricate evidence," he claimed. Swamy's death, he said, was part of a pattern of targeting voices critical of the state. "Gauri Lankesh and Narendra Dabholkar were also killed because of their leftist leanings." School education minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi said the DMK will continue Swamy's work for the marginalised. "The Union government falsely implicated him simply for fighting for the marginalised," he said. "We (DMK) are continuing from where Stan Swamy left off in his fight to uplift the downtrodden," he said. CPM state secretary K Balakrishnan demanded that the Centre withdraw all cases filed against those named in the Bhima-Koregaon case and repeal the UAPA, calling it a law used to suppress dissent. Manual scavenging: Junagadh officials face action for making man enter sewer
Rajkot: The talati and administrator of the Bhesan village panchayat in Junagadh district have been booked for allegedly making a sweeper enter an underground sewer, in violation of laws banning manual scavenging and the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. The FIR, registered at Bhesan police station, accuses the village talati J B Solanki and an administrator identified as Chavda. The complaint was filed by Dinesh Chohan, who was employed as a temporary sweeper with the panchayat for seven years. Chohan stated that on July 3, his brother Lalit and nephew Rutik and he were called by the two officials and directed to clean all clogged sewers in the village because of complaints of overflowing sewage. The officials allegedly told them that their salaries would be withheld if the task was not completed, and indicated that entering the sewers might be required. The three men began cleaning the sewers using equipment provided by the panchayat. During the process, they encountered a blockage in one sewer which could not be addressed unless someone physically entered the sewer. Jaleel refuses to take police notice, alleges cops under political pressure
Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: Former MP and AIMIM functionary Imtiaz Jaleel on Friday refused to accept a notice issued by the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar city police, who are investigating two cases filed against the politician under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. Jaleel is facing accusations of using objectionable and caste-sensitive language, prompting the registration of FIRs under the SC/ST Act. The city police served him a notice seeking his cooperation in the investigation. However, Jaleel not only declined to accept the notice but also launched a counterattack, accusing the police of acting under political pressure. "Police are working at the behest of district guardian minister Sanjay Shirsat. But no amount of pressure is going to stop me. I will continue to expose Shirsat and his acts, come what may," Jaleel said. Over the past few weeks, Jaleel repeatedly accused Shirsat, who is also the state's social justice minister, of power misuse and corruption.
