Hakim Danish clinches first win of season in Aragon

f
KUALA LUMPUR: Motorcycle racer Hakim Danish Ramli did his chances of securing a seat in Moto3 next year no harm after emerging victorious at the Aragon leg of the Red Bull Rookies Cup today (June 8).
Hakim, who finished second in race one yesterday (June 7), went one better in race two today, taking the flag ahead of Spanish duo Brian Uriarte (+0.188s) and David Gonzalez (+0.195s).
It was Hakim's first race win of the season - he had placed second in his first five races - and further consolidated his position atop the championship standings with 125 points to his name.
It was a commendable achievement for Hakim, who started from seventh on the grid, which is likely to boost his chances of moving up to the Moto3 World Championship next year.
Last month Sepang International Circuit (SIC) chief executive officer Azhan Shafriman Hanif disclosed that Hakim essentially has a seat waiting for him in Moto3 next season but must first prove himself worthy of the slot.
Hakim is a product of SIC's two-wheel talent development programme which is run by ZK Racing.
Mugello will host the next round of the Red Bull Rookies Cup on June 21-22.

JDT set for total dominance again after productive pre-season in Alicante

Refreshed: Johor Darul Ta'zim players and coaches pose after the final day of their pre-season tour in Spain. — JDT FC PETALING JAYA: Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) are returning from Spain with valuable lessons and a clearer sense of direction after completing a productive pre-season stint in Alicante. The Southern Tigers recorded three wins, two draws and two defeats from seven friendly matches. On Tuesday, they defeated Saudi Arabian club Riyadh 1-0, which was their last match in the series. Their other wins were against Spanish clubs Real Murcia (4-1) and Costa City 1-0. They drew with La Liga club Levante (1-1) and English Championship side Cardiff City (2-2) and lost to Valencia (0-1) and Qatar club Al-Rayyan (0-1). The club's chief executive officer (CEO) Luis Garcia of Spain said the results had given them a balanced mix of confidence and reality checks ahead of the new season starting on Aug 8. 'We have identified areas to work on to continue our good run in Malaysian football,' he said. JDT will enter the season as the heavyweights, having won a triple quadruple – Charity Shield, Super League, FA Cup and Malaysia Cup from 2022 to the 2024-2025 season. 'The game against Al-Rayyan was a demanding match where we controlled and performed well for most of the game, though we missed the final touch,' said Garcia. 'The pre-season has allowed us to identify areas for improvement, to sharpen our game, and to prepare ourselves for the challenges of a long season ahead.' Despite the mixed results, Garcia emphasised that pre-season was more than just scorelines. 'Moments like these build more than fitness as they build connection, unity, and a stronger bond within the group. We work, we play, we align. One objective, one direction. Let's keep growing together.' Garcia, in his first full campaign at the helm of JDT, has unveiled a long-term vision. 'A new season begins, not just with a team, but with a vision. At JDT, every year is a new chapter to dream bigger, push harder, and lead with purpose. 'This is more than football. It's a project built on ambition, unity, and belief. ''The best is yet to come.' JDT, who will kick off against Selangor in the Charity Shield on Aug 8, have set a clear mission – to write their next dominant chapter in the game.

Interview: China writes "new chapter of history" in artistic swimming, says coach Tarres

by sportswriters Wang Zijiang and Yue Chenxing SINGAPORE, July 24 (Xinhua) -- China has captured three gold and three silver medals so far in artistic swimming at the World Aquatics Championships in Singapore, marking a major milestone for the team. Behind the scenes of the success is a familiar figure in the sport: Spanish coaching legend Ana Tarres. For Tarres, who joined China's national artistic swimming team ahead of the 2024 Paris Olympics, the results are both a breakthrough and a sign of what lies ahead. "What we've done in this competition, especially winning the team technical event with the Russian athletes participating, is a new chapter in the history of Chinese artistic swimming," Tarres told Xinhua. "It's the first time China has ever beaten the strong rival in a competition where they were both present. I think this is a good motivation for the girls. Nothing is impossible through a lot of work, discipline, commitment and swimming. That's a step forward." While China earned its first Olympic gold in artistic swimming at the Paris Games - a feat made possible in part by the Russian athletes' absence - this year's World Championships victory came with the Russian athletes back in the pool, competing under the name Neutral Athletes B (NAB). In the team technical final, China topped the standings, finishing 7.1818 points ahead of its longtime rival. Tarres, 56, is no stranger to international podiums. As Spain's head coach from 1997 to 2012, she guided her teams to four Olympic medals, 26 World Championship medals and 25 European medals. She joined China in 2023 and has played a key role in its rise to Olympic champion status. "What I mostly do is to put in value the talent that they have," she said. "I'm very good in teamwork. I'm very good at trying to get the best version of each swimmer and trying to detect the talent, trying to put it at the service of the team, and then everyone takes benefit of it." Tarres splits her time between Spain and China, depending on the team's preparation cycle. The results, she says, speak for themselves. China's athletes exceeded expectations in Singapore, particularly in the marquee team technical and free routines. "The team events are the king and queen of the sport," Tarres said. "This is our main goal, and we're on the right path." Looking ahead to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, Tarres is focused on sustaining China's momentum. "We only have two chances in the Games - team and duet - and our goal is clear: go for gold in both," she said. Tarres' coaching career hasn't been without controversy. She parted ways with the Spanish federation in 2012 after allegations of authoritarian coaching - claims she has consistently denied. Now focused firmly on the future, Tarres says she's not looking back. "This is the past. Let's focus on the present and the future."

Soccer-England's Walsh hope Spain can enjoy Euro final after Rubiales controversy

Defending champions England meet Spain in Basel on Sunday, two years on from a World Cup final that was overshadowed by then Spanish football federation chief Luis Rubiales kissing striker Jenni Hermoso on the lips after the game. "There's a lot of respect between both the teams and, I think the most important thing for them as a footballer, is that they can enjoy this final – that there's not the controversy surrounding it," Walsh said from England's base camp on Thursday. "The girls deserve to be there to play incredible football. The way our league jumped after we won the (2022) Euros, if you compare it to Spain it probably wasn't the same and they won the World Cup," said Walsh, who played 64 games for Barcelona before joining Chelsea. "After the final there was a lot of controversy and I don't think, for them, there was enough spotlight on how incredible they played. It was all about the other stuff. "As a professional, that was disappointing to see. I have a lot of friends in that team and I think they probably deserved a little bit more than what they got." Rubiales was found guilty of sexual assault for the unsolicited kiss during the World Cup medal ceremony, and fined over 10,000 euros ($12,000). The incident sparked widespread debate about sexism in Spanish society and women's football, fuelling momentum for the "Me Too" movement in the country. ($1 = 0.8500 euros) (Reporting by Lori Ewing)
