Hakim Danish clinches first win of season in Aragon

f
KUALA LUMPUR: Motorcycle racer Hakim Danish Ramli did his chances of securing a seat in Moto3 next year no harm after emerging victorious at the Aragon leg of the Red Bull Rookies Cup today (June 8).
Hakim, who finished second in race one yesterday (June 7), went one better in race two today, taking the flag ahead of Spanish duo Brian Uriarte (+0.188s) and David Gonzalez (+0.195s).
It was Hakim's first race win of the season - he had placed second in his first five races - and further consolidated his position atop the championship standings with 125 points to his name.
It was a commendable achievement for Hakim, who started from seventh on the grid, which is likely to boost his chances of moving up to the Moto3 World Championship next year.
Last month Sepang International Circuit (SIC) chief executive officer Azhan Shafriman Hanif disclosed that Hakim essentially has a seat waiting for him in Moto3 next season but must first prove himself worthy of the slot.
Hakim is a product of SIC's two-wheel talent development programme which is run by ZK Racing.
Mugello will host the next round of the Red Bull Rookies Cup on June 21-22.

Atletico Madrid sign Marc Pubill after missing Jesus Areso

ATLETICO MADRID signed Almeria full-back Marc Pubill on Tuesday after missing out on Jesus Areso. Osasuna right-back Areso joined Athletic Bilbao earlier on despite reports Atletico had agreed a deal for the Spaniard. 'Our club and Almeria have reached a deal, as long as (Pubill) passes his medical and signs his new contract,' said Atletico in a statement. Atletico did not state how much they will pay to sign the 22-year-old defender who was linked with a £13 million ($18 million) switch to Premier League side Wolves. Areso came back to Athletic Bilbao after departing their reserve side in 2021 for Osasuna, with the 26-year-old's return costing the Basque side up to 12 million euros ($14 million), according to Spanish reports. 'Athletic and Osasuna have reached a deal for the transfer of the full-back Jesus Areso, who signs for the red-and-whites until June 30, 2031,' said Athletic in a statement. Ernesto Valverde's Athletic finished fourth last season in La Liga and managed to tie down winger Nico Williams earlier this summer despite interest from Barcelona. - AFP

Soccer-Comeback win gives Germany game plan for semi-final with Spain

GENEVA (Reuters) -Germany's gritty win over France has given them a template for how they should play for the rest of the tournament, defender Rebecca Knaak told reporters on Tuesday ahead of her side's Women's Euro semi-final against Spain in Zurich. The Germans had a player sent off and conceded a penalty early on against the French, but recovered to draw 1-1 after extra time and win the quarter-final shootout, pitting the eight-times champions against Spain on Wednesday. "Really, it's the perfect example for passion, strength, mental strength, all these things that are characteristics that we possess," Knaak told a press conference. "Of course, on a tactical basis, we are prepared by the coach and the team, but the basic, fundamental characteristic has been built for the Spanish (game) in the French match." After two first-half red cards in their last two games, coach Christian Wueck is hoping to keep 11 players on the pitch for as long as possible so he can make the most of his attacking talent. "I think we will chase them (Spain) a lot. We won't have a lot of possession, and we will suffer, but we have to find the right moments and take advantage of the right moments to push our game ... we are strong in possession, and this is going to be the big difference, because we want to play on the ball," he told reporters. The Germans have also been disrupted by injuries during the tournament, but Knaak said the sense of togetherness in the squad lessened the impact of losing players. "I think it says a lot about the team that we accepted every situation as it came along. There's so many different, unusual situations, and we adapted, we accepted those situations, and we supported each other," she said. "And at the end, it doesn't really matter who plays next to whom. We are a team, and we have the squad exactly for those reasons, so that we can adapt." England play Italy in the first semi-final in Geneva on Tuesday, with the final in Basel on Sunday. TSG take on World Tour giants in Spain

KUALA LUMPUR: Terengganu Cycling Team (TSG) began their Spanish classics campaign on a mixed note at the Terres de L´Ebre Classic yesterday (July 22). TSG's foreign riders achieved decent results with Stefan de Bod coming in 24th (+2:01s), Mathias Bregnhoj was 33rd (+2:59s), Vadim Pronskiy was 36th (+3:05s) while Anatolii Budiak was 51st (+5:28s) from over 120 riders who started the race. TSG's local trio Kee Zhe Yie, Nur Aiman Rosli and Nur Aiman Zariff, however, did not finish the 185.8 kilometre race which started in Roquetes and ended in Tortosa, featuring a brace of category three climbs. The pace was strong from the start as the UCI 1.1 race featured UCI WorldTeam squads from UAE Team Emirates, XDS Astana Team, Movistar Team and EF Education-EasyPost. Team Emirates' Isaac del Toro - runner-up at this year's Giro d'Italia - claimed victory in 4:23:58s. Astana's Christian Scaroni came in second (+46s) while EF Education-EasyPost's Lukas Nerurkar (+51s) completed the podium. Davide Formolo (8th, Movistar) and Diego Ulissi (9th, Astana) were among the other big names in the top-10. TSG riders will next head to the Basque Country for the Ordiziako Classic (167km) on Friday (July 25). They will conclude their campaign in Spain with the Circuito de Getxo-Memorial Hermanos Otxoa race (172.2km) on Aug 3. All three events are UCI 1.1 races which are part of the UCI European Tour.
