Liverpool forward on the brink of agreeing transfer move

Yahooa day ago
Diaz and Bayern are close
It's the German giants Bayern Munich who have displayed the most interest in Diaz so far and they're intent on getting their man, despite the high €100m asking price that Liverpool have put on him.
We didn't know if Liverpool would consider budging on their demands, since the stance that club has shown so far has been one of 'he's not for sale', but the latest reports claims there's been movement.
According to Nicolo Schira, who posted an update on X: "Luis Diaz is getting closer to Bayern Munich from Liverpool for €75m. Agreement in principle with the winger for a contract until 2030."
That figure would equate to around £65m which is £16m profit on the £49m Liverpool paid in 2022.

Brilliant attribute SOLD Arne Slot on Hugo Ekitike

Liverpool are set to sign Hugo Ekitike after an agreement was found with Eintracht Frankfurt. Here's what loves about the player. Liverpool will reportedly sign Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt in a deal that's suddenly moved very quickly. The Reds weren't supposedly set on a striker a week ago - now they're about to sign one. As soon as Liverpool were willing to sign Ekitike, it seems, a deal was ready to go. The exciting times continue, then, as they add the Frenchman to a remarkable transfer window. Florian Wirtz is the headline act, joining for a club-record fee, while both Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong revitalise the full-back positions. Giorgi Mamardashvili is a new goalkeeper to rival Alisson Becker, too. So why Ekitike? The obvious answer is that he's a fantastic talent who impressed no end for Frankfurt last season. But there's apparently one key reason that sold Arne Slot on Ekitike. Arne Slot impressed with Hugo Ekitike Mark McAdam writes on Twitter that Slot is a big fan of Ekitike's versatility, with that being a key reason for getting a deal over the line. L'Équipe then goes further than that, explaining the attributes that Slot sees real potential in. They say Slot knows Ekitike must improve his finishing but his ability to drop into different spaces to accommodate teammates and different styles of play is key here. The forward can certainly do that - he's happy to run behind but just as eager to collect the ball to feet. Ekitike can play through the middle or drift out onto the left, too, with the inside channel being a favourite of his. It's exactly what Liverpool need in a centre-forward when Mo Salah is so dominant in attack.

Karen Guregian: Are Mike Vrabel's goals realistic for the Patriots?

One of Mike Vrabel's stated goals for the Patriots with respect to the upcoming season sounds simple enough. 'We just want to be good enough to take advantage of bad football,' Vrabel said during his introductory press conference in January. 'That's where we're going to start.' Advertisement Given what's played out the past few seasons, with bad football being more the norm for the Patriots, it's a good place to start. It just might be the easiest mission to accomplish. Even Vrabel isn't convinced this group, which starts training camp Wednesday, will ultimately be up to the stated task. 'What I've tried to tell all the players is right now I don't know if we're good enough to take advantage of bad football. I'm unsure,' he went on. 'Like we're undefeated right now, but if we can just work towards taking advantage of bad football and being good enough to, when somebody makes a mistake, capitalizing on it and not being the ones that make the mistakes, and focusing on the little things and the details and helping them do their job better, that's a great place to start.' This used to be part of Bill Belichick's playbook. The team's former coach didn't want the Patriots to beat themselves, but rather, have the other teams fall prey to their own miscues. Advertisement Belichick largely coached the bad football out of his teams, and watched other teams self-destruct. That sure sounds a lot like Vrabel's plan, and if he's able to push the 2025 Patriots to that point, and accomplish that mission, the new coach should enjoy a pretty successful season, especially given a favorable schedule. The mantra of taking advantage of bad football should play well against the Jets, Dolphins, Panthers, Giants, Saints, Falcons, etc. If the Patriots hold serve against the teams they should beat on the schedule, that will go a long way toward getting out of their four-win rut, and being a fringe playoff team. Advertisement To this point, the players seem to have bought into the Vrabel way. They've appreciated his hands-on approach, and embraced the coaching not only from Vrabel, but his staff. Is it even fair to think Vrabel will be able to get this group good enough to feast on bad teams? Absolutely. As the head coach of the Tennessee Titans, Vrabel was able to do more with less. He was able to push players and challenge them to greater heights. He was able to make them take advantage of bad football on the opposing side. Moreover, it didn't take long for many of those players to believe with him on the sidelines, they had an edge. Advertisement Former Patriot Logan Ryan, who played for Vrabel in Tennessee, explained what that meant. 'I was blown away by how smart he was as a coach, as a strategist, an in-game strategist,' Ryan told MassLive earlier in the year. 'He really gave us an advantage not only schematically defensively, but just using strategy at the end and knowing exactly what to do situationally. 'He knows what he's doing,' Ryan went on. 'He knows how to win games and he'll do what it takes to win games.' Vrabel, who won three Super Bowls as a player for the Patriots, went 54-45 over six seasons as the Titans head coach from 2018-23 and led Tennessee to the AFC Championship Game in 2019. Advertisement He did all of that without the benefit of a quarterback who had the promise and pedigree of Drake Maye. Harold Landry, who was signed by the Patriots in free agency, also played for Vrabel. He pretty much echoed Ryan's remarks. 'I feel like one of the main jobs for a head coach is to make sure your team's prepared situationally,' Landry said. 'And all I know is, as long as I played for Vrabes, there was never a situation I wasn't prepared for. Like, I don't care what the score was in the fourth quarter. I don't know. We just always had a feeling that we was going to pull this out. Didn't matter what the score was going into the fourth and we just always found a way to win. It's crazy. We just found a way to win. And that was just kind of the mentality. We just didn't think we could lose, to be honest, no matter what was going on in the game.' After the Titans let him go, Vrabel spent last season with the Cleveland Browns as a consultant, but was involved and engaged with all aspects of the program. Advertisement It wasn't much of a secret where club owner Robert Kraft was headed following the dismissal of Jerod Mayo after one season. Kraft gave the baton to Vrabel, believing he could resurrect the team, and once again make the Patriots great again. 'In the interview process, Mike showed us that he had a very deep understanding of our current team,' Kraft said during Vrabel's introductory press conference, 'and most importantly, he had a clear and focused strategy of how to get us back to the championship way that is not only so important to all of us, but also something that I think our fan base really deserves and expects.' Vrabel, who was inducted into the Patriots Hall of Fame in 2023, smartly signed several players who understood the culture he was trying to build. Advertisement He brought in players who also get what makes him tick as a head coach. 'I want to galvanize our football team. I want to galvanize this building. I want to galvanize our fans,' Vrabel said after being hired. 'The most important thing are the players . . . I want to provide a program that provides their ownership but also their accountability of each other and one that they'll be proud to be a part of and that they're going to fight for.' With training camp on tap, he's already gotten that ball rolling. We'll see soon enough if he makes this Patriots team good enough to take advantage of bad football. Why Tennessee football fans pick a favorite quarterback before competition begins

Some Tennessee football fans have already picked their preferred quarterback: Joey Aguilar, Jake Merklinger or George MacIntyre. But why so soon, and based on what? On this episode of "The Volunteer State" podcast, hosts Adam Sparks and John Adams explore the phenomenon of fans showing stern allegiance to a particular quarterback over the other contenders on the same team. Advertisement It's even stranger when the quarterbacks have barely played, or at least not played for the Vols. UT begins preseason practice on July 30, when the the quarterback competition will take center stage. To hear the full conversation, listen to the podcast. Here are some highlights. Lessons from Peyton Manning vs. Branndon Stewart Sparks shared the story about when, in 1994, he briefly thought Branndon Stewart was a better option at quarterback than Peyton Manning. In a blowout loss to Florida, Stewart had better stats than Manning. And Stewart was a dual-threat quarterback like Heath Shuler, which seemed to matter at the time. Advertisement Let that be a lesson for fans looking for the second coming of Hendon Hooker in the current competition. Successful quarterbacks can take different shapes and sizes. Sparks, a 14-year-old during the 1994 season, said it also didn't matter to him that Peyton was Archie Manning's son. He preferred to be a contrarian by initially favoring Stewart. "To a 14-year-old kid in 1994, telling me that he was Archie Manning's son was like telling a kid today that (a freshman quarterback) is Tim Couch's son – that is, a son of a really good former SEC quarterback who you had seen very little of but had heard the name of," Sparks said. "So for those reasons, for a very short time I thought Branndon Stewart was better than Peyton Manning. And obviously I was completely wrong." Advertisement JOEY AGUILAR He won over Tennessee teammates. Now he must win QB job Why fans favor Joey Aguilar, Jake Merklinger or George MacIntyre Adams said fans like to believe that they can see something that coaches or media haven't seen. It motivates them to pick a quarterback, often not the obvious frontrunner, in hopes of being proven right. Reporters do that too. We can watch a preferred quarterback make a couple of nice plays and then accentuate his positives while ignoring his flaws. UT fans favoring Aguilar point to his experience in 24 starts at Appalachian State. He passed for 6,760 yards and 56 touchdowns in two seasons. Advertisement UT fans favoring Merklinger believe his experience in Josh Heupel's system will make a difference. And Merklinger flashed his talent in the 2024 Orange and White spring game. UT fans favoring MacIntyre like that he's an in-state product with a college football pedigree. And he played well in the 2025 Orange and White spring game. Too much attention to Joey Aguilar? You be the judge Sparks saw a subtle backlash to Aguilar from some UT fans following SEC football media days. Media covering the Vols produced several stories from the event that focused on Aguilar and his integration into the team over the summer. Advertisement Those stories didn't crown Aguilar as the starter. Instead, they laid out the open competition, where all three quarterbacks will get a shot at the starting job. But some fans interpreted attention paid to Aguilar as an endorsement of him as the starter. It's a common misperception. But stories were also written about Merklinger and MacIntyre when they were the newest quarterback on the roster. Sparks and Adams also discussed some players to watch in preseason practice, including Duke transfer running back Star Thomas and Alabama transfer wide receiver Amari Jefferson. To hear that discussion and more about the quarterbacks, listen to the podcast. Advertisement Adam Sparks is the Tennessee football beat reporter. Email X, formerly known as Twitter@AdamSparks.
