HC notices on PIL over liquor sale at inflated rates

Time of India18-06-2025
Bhopal: A division bench of Madhya Pradesh high court issued notices to respondents in a public interest litigation (PIL) over the sale of liquor at inflated rates, far beyond the MRP.
The sale of liquor at prices beyond the MRP is causing financial losses to both the consumers and the state govt, said the petitioner. The department of excise is also complicit with the vendors in allowing the sale of liquor at prices decided by them and not according to the MRP printed on the bottle.
A Jabalpur-based advocate, Deepanshu Sahu, in his petition, said that the vendors can't sell liquor at inflated prices without the quiet consent and collusion of the excise staff.
It's causing financial losses to both the state exchequer and the consumers of liquor. No tax is paid on the excess amount that is charged from the consumers. If there is a complaint by consumers, the excise staff gets an apology written from the vendor and allows the shop to continue operating and overcharging the consumers.
The excise commissioner, commercial tax commissioner of the state, district excise officer, and district collector of Jabalpur are respondents in the case. After the initial hearing, the bench of acting Chief Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva and Justice Vinay Saraf has sought reply of respondents within four weeks. Advocate Amit Khatri appeared in the case for the petitioner.

Central Bank stake to double bancassurance for company: Future Generali MD

The stake acquisition by Central Bank of India in Future Generali India Insurance is expected to double sales through the bancassurance channel from the existing 6–7 per cent over the next three to five years, Anup Rau, Managing Director (MD) & Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the company, said. 'Bancassurance typically accounts for around 6 per cent of the general insurance industry's overall business. For Future Generali also, the share of banca is currently around 6–7 per cent. The company hopes to double the share of bancassurance to total business to close to 10–12 per cent in the next three to five years,' Rau said. State-owned Central Bank of India acquired a 24.91 per cent stake in Future Generali India Insurance for ₹451 crore. The acquisition was completed on 4 June 2025 and the bank has received approval from the Competition Commission of India (CCI), Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (Irdai). The remaining stake is held by the Italy-based Generali Group. The bank partnership is also expected to provide access to its wide customer base and an opportunity to expand into remote and rural areas of the country, which will further boost business growth for the company. The multi-line general insurer ended the financial year 2025 with ₹5,408.16 crore in gross written premium, which it targets to grow to ₹10,000 crore by FY30. 'We will grow faster than the industry. If the industry is going to grow at 10–12 per cent, we will go higher. Among the top 10 players, we were the third fastest growing last year. The Central Bank makes it possible for us to reach remote corners of the country and having a brick-and-mortar structure makes it possible to penetrate the smallest panchayat. I think we'll continue to be among the fastest growing ones. We aim to touch the ₹10,000 crore premium mark by FY30,' Rau said. The insurer recorded 10 per cent growth in FY25, outperforming the industry, which grew 6.5 per cent during the year amid the new accounting norms and muted performance in the health and motor segments. Going forward, the company aims to maintain above-industry growth, even as the sector continues to adjust to revised accounting practices.

EC should take cognisance of violent incidents in Bihar: Mayawati

The recent sensational murder of BJP leader and industrialist Gopal Khemka in Patna has stirred political tensions in Bihar, the former Uttar Pradesh CM Mayawati said Press Trust of India Lucknow BSP chief Mayawati on Monday said the Election Commission should take cognisance of incidents of violence in Bihar, including the murder of Patna-based businessman Gopal Khemka, for the conduct of peaceful elections in the state. In a post on X, she spoke about the "deteriorating" law and order situation in Bihar ahead of the assembly polls later this year. "The recent sensational murder of Gopal Khemka, a prominent industrialist and leader of the ruling party BJP, in Patna, has heated up the politics of the state in a new way," the former Uttar Pradesh chief minister said. "If the Election Commission takes cognisance of this bloodshed and appropriate action right now, it will be better for conducting peaceful elections," she said. Khemka was shot dead by an unidentified armed assailant outside his house in Gandhi Maidan locality of Patna on Friday as he was about to alight from his car. His mortal remains were consigned to flames at Gulbi Ghat in Patna on Sunday. A large number of businessmen and industrialists attended Khemka's cremation. Mayawati sought to know who was behind the violent incidents in Bihar. "Not only is the coalition government of the state in the dock regarding this, but the politics is also quite heated on this issue. What effect will this have on the political equations and elections of the state in the future, it remains to be seen," Mayawati said. She also said that her party will fight the Bihar Assembly on its own strength. "An appeal is made to the Election Commission that whatever strict steps are needed to be taken to free the Bihar elections from misuse of government machinery as well as muscle power, money power and criminal power etc., then it must be taken on time so that the election campaign proves to be free and fair," the BSP chief said on X.
