Snooker champion Wilson returns to old school
A snooker world champion said it was "incredible" to return to his former school for a question and answer session with young pupils. Kyren Wilson from Kettering, who won the 2024 Snooker World Championship, visited Kettering Park Junior Academy to speak with its Year 6 students. Advertisement During the visit, arranged by the World Snooker Tour, Wilson also guided the children through a snooker workshop, giving advice on how to play the sport. One child said they were "buzzing" to meet the world champion, and Wilson said it was "good to be back". "I've got many fond memories here, it's a beautiful school, and they looked after me," Wilson said. "It's important to go back to your roots. I wanted to come back; it's important to be the best role model you can be. My children are of a similar age [to the ones he met for the workshop] and I kind of understand where their minds are at." Advertisement He said it was important to teach young people about snooker and added: "I'm doing so much in China, where snooker is almost part of their school curriculum. "Even if it's just a little Q&A with pupils, getting a little snooker table in and they can try and learn a little bit." The 33-year-old said he had been passionate about snooker from a young age, playing in local clubs as a youngster and even taking shifts at a sports bar in Northampton so he could get practice in before and after his shifts.
