Saudi envoy leads maritime safety talks in London
Kamal Al-Junaidi is the first Arab to preside over the committee, creating a milestone for both the Kingdom and the Arab world in maritime governance, the Saudi Press Agency reported on Sunday.
His role also reflects Saudi Arabia's growing presence in international maritime organizations and commitment to advancing maritime communication and safety systems.
Al-Junaidi managed the sessions and acted as a neutral facilitator, helping member states reach consensus on key issues, including oversight of the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System, implementation of Long Range Tracking and Safety standards and audit reviews for satellite communication providers.
He also led discussions on proposed maritime safety regulation amendments, monitored the organization's strategic direction to ensure alignment with IMO standards and submitted the committee's recommendations to the General Assembly.
The 51st session took place at the IMO headquarters in London, with representatives from 44 countries engaging in in-depth discussions on key maritime challenges.

Indonesia's president performs Umrah

Ex-Labour chief could form pro-Palestine party in UK
LONDON: Former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has suggested he could launch a political movement to provide a left-wing 'alternative' to the governing party before the next general election. Corbyn was suspended from Labour in 2020 by the UK's current Prime Minister Keir Starmer due to a row over antisemitism. He has since sat as an independent MP, and has hinted at a desire to form a new group centered around socialist policies with a pro-Palestine stance. Corbyn told ITV's 'Peston' political show that he is holding discussions with members of the Independent Alliance, who were elected last year by running on pro-Palestine platforms against Labour MPs. The alliance includes Leicester South MP Shockat Adam; Birmingham Perry Barr MP Ayoub Khan; Blackburn MP Adnan Hussain; and Dewsbury and Batley MP Iqbal Mohamed. 'That grouping will come together. There will be an alternative,' Corbyn said, adding that its foreign policy platform would be 'based on peace rather than war,' and that it would seek to alleviate poverty and inequality.

Pro-Palestinian Activists Charged with Damaging Planes at UK Air Base are Held in Custody
Four pro-Palestinian protesters were held in custody Thursday after their first appearance in a London court on charges they damaged two Royal Air Force planes with red paint and crowbars. The charges come after the group Palestine Action said two of its members entered RAF Brize Norton on June 20 and used electric scooters to approach two Voyager jets used for air-to-air refueling. The protesters used repurposed fire extinguishers to spray paint into the planes' jet engines and caused further damage with crowbars, according to the group, which released video footage of the incident, The AP news reported. The four, all between the ages of 22 and 35, are charged with conspiracy to commit criminal damage and conspiracy to enter a prohibited place for purposes prejudicial to the interests of the UK, counterterror police said in a statement. The Crown Prosecution Service will argue that the offenses have a 'terrorist connection,' police said. The group did not enter pleas in Westminster Magistrates' Court. They were scheduled to appear July 18 at the Central Criminal Court. Palestine Action has claimed responsibility for a series of incidents targeting Israeli defense contractors in the UK and other sites linked to the war in Gaza. Following the incident at RAF Brize Norton, the government introduced legislation to ban Palestine Action as a terrorist organization. The measure, being debated in Parliament, would make it a criminal offense to belong to or support the group, with a maximum of 14 years in prison. Palestine Action said its protests are designed to end international support for Israel's war in Gaza. Planes from Brize Norton, 70 miles (112 kilometers) northwest of London, regularly fly to RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus, Britain's main air base for operations in the Middle East.
