Why Ofcom was right to clip Radio 2's wings

The BBC is many things to many people, but what it should never be, to anyone, is a bully boy. Therefore, the corporation should be counting its blessings that Ofcom, following a full Competitions Assessment, has provisionally concluded that the proposed extension to Radio 2 – a digital spinoff that would focus on music and archive content from the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s – cannot go ahead. Ofcom concluded that the station would 'create a significant adverse impact on fair and effective competition', something verboten as per the BBC Charter.
The rationale was obvious. While Radio 2 is easily still the most popular radio station in the UK, it's not as popular as it once was (losing roughly 2m listeners in the past five years), with commercial radio booming and independent stations popping up to serve audiences that, according to Ofcom, 'the BBC has moved away from'. The station's major commercial rivals - Greatest Hits, Magic, Heart - have strengthened their positions in recent years, poaching BBC DJs and listeners alike by serving up what we think of as more traditional Radio 2 fare. The audience that Radio 2 has moved away from is, inevitably, the older audience, and thus trying to claw those listeners back via the proposed spin-offs seemed a bit rich. The BBC can't have its cake and eat it.
One station in particular benefited from the change in Radio 2's intended audience – Boom Radio, founded in 2021 by Phil Riley and David Lloyd to cater for the 'golden oldies' audience that Radio 2 turned its back on. It's a tiny affair, with 1 per cent of Radio 2's budget, but the station has recruited cannily ('Diddy' David Hamilton, Simon Bates, David 'Kid' Jensen) and serves up exactly the sort of music that the Radio 2 extension was suggesting. The station proudly boasts that the average age of its regular presenters is 70 and that many of them host their shows from their sheds and bedrooms. Ofcom ruled that Boom Radio, which currently attracts just under 650k listeners, would suffer more than most from Radio 2's proposed land grab.
Riley, Boom Radio's CEO, was understandably cockahoop with the ruling, calling the proposed station 'typical BBC arrogance… Common sense has prevailed – David has beaten Goliath'. However, we should all be pleased. Firstly, because the BBC should not be allowed to thump smaller, innovative rivals into submission just because they can – Ofcom have allowed other BBC digital extension to go ahead, in the shape of Radio 1 Dance, Radio 1 Anthems and Radio 3 Unwind, because it sees 'limited impact' on fair and effective competition. And secondly, because this could be the spur for Radio 2 to get its own house in order.
Ken Bruce, whose defection to Greatest Hits in 2023 should have sent chills down BBC spines, last year advised his former employers to change course and stop chasing younger listeners. 'Radio 2 thinking it's cool is the worst thing we can do,' he said. Whether the station thinks it is cool or not is immaterial, but what is certain is that it has moved its focus onto Gen X listeners (people born in the late 1960s to the early 1980s), with much of its music now coming from 1980s, 1990s and later. (As I write this, Jeremy Vine has just played two big hits from the mid-1990s, Dreams by Gabrielle and Don't Speak by No Doubt.)
Radio 2 needs to take this opportunity to take stock and rediscover true cross-generational appeal (and also to consider a slightly more offbeat musical menu than used to be on offer via programmes such as Clare Teal's The Swing and Band Show). Older listeners are not a genre to be syphoned off into a digital station, while younger listeners still love to be introduced to music from long before their time. Now is the time for Radio 2 to remember the musical diversity that, in years past, has made it a hit.

Former BBC Radio Sheffield presenter Gerry Kersey, who became a listeners' favourite during his 50 years in broadcasting, has died. The 86-year-old, who worked for both the BBC and independent radio, had been ill for some time and died on Friday morning with his wife, Christine, at his side. Paying tribute, Katrina Bunker, Head of BBC Yorkshire, said: "Gerry was a true legend of local broadcasting, starting his career in 1968 as one of the first voices on BBC Radio Sheffield." Away from the microphone, he had a talent for performing in theatre and for art. His paintings featured in exhibitions and he raised money for charity by making and selling Christmas cards featuring his work. In a 2018 interview in the Sheffield Star marking his 50 years in broadcasting, he recalled that in the 1970s he was doing two jobs, handling advertising for local company Stanley Tools and doing radio work. "It became an alarmingly unbalanced life," he told the newspaper. But broadcasting eventually won his heart. "I decided, with my wife's full approval, that although it was only earning £12 a week I would take it on and see what I could do," he said. It turned out well and Gerry became a listeners' favourite, both for the BBC and on independent station Radio Hallam. Ms Bunker said: "In later years he was known for request-based and nostalgia shows and he got loads of letters, emails and calls right up to his last show in 2020. "Wherever you went around the area you would always meet someone who loved Gerry's show. "Off-mic, Gerry was just as much of a gentleman as he was on it, always encouraging , always warm and proud to still be on the radio after 50 years. "He will be sadly missed by all who knew him." The cherished BBC star married marketing executive Hannah Summers in 2017, having first met at Wentworth Golf Club in Surrey in 2012. The esteemed dancer confessed his bewilderment at life's cruelty, as he watched Hannah lovingly interact with her nephews, questioning the fairness of their IVF journey. He said: "I knew I wanted to be with her, I saw her with her nephews. She's so kind and so caring, I just couldn't understand the universe." Anton bemoaned the apparent unfairness from above, stating: "And whoever is upstairs, if anyone's upstairs, looking down and going 'you are the most perfect person to have children, but I'm not going to let you have any children because I'm going to give you this'. "And I'm going to say 'you're going to have this endometriosis, and you're going to suffer with this all of your life, chronically, and I'm not going to let you have any children. "I thought that was peculiar, cruel, and inexplicable and unforgivable. And if ever I go up to somewhere and meet this person I would say 'I think you're not OK with decisions like this, this doesn't make any sense to me." Anton has candidly spoken about the difficulties he and his wife Hannah encountered during their IVF journey, which eventually brought them closer together. The couple were blessed as the treatment worked on their first attempt, resulting in the birth of their twins, George and Henrietta, in 2017, with their nuptials taking place later that year. In a heartfelt chat with Giovanna, Anton admitted his previous lack of knowledge about endometriosis and emphasised the importance of increased government funding for women's health services. Reflecting on their ordeal, he shared: "Then we went through the process of IVF, well crying out loud. You girls are extraordinary. As much as I want to get involved, all I can do is hold your hand. It makes me emotional every time I talk about it. The injections, the stress, the anxiety. I have anxiety and stress but it's not my body. "She has these injections and the bruises in the bum, in the thigh, in the stomach. And you're trying to help but what can you do? Whatever you want, tell me and I'll do it but that's all you have and it's horrendous as a man to watch it. "You feel so inadequate and you want to do so much more but I can't do anything. And that's why you girls are so extraordinary, you're extraordinary that you do all this stuff."

Actress Monica Dolan ‘immensely proud' of Post Office campaigners

Bafta award-winning actress Monica Dolan has said she fell in love with acting as she 'just got a feeling from it that I didn't get from anywhere else'. Speaking as she appeared as the guest on BBC Radio 4's Desert Island Discs, the Mr Bates Vs the Post Office star said she first got the bug for acting at school. 'I just got a feeling from it that I didn't get from anywhere else,' she told presenter Lauren Laverne. 'I think it was basically a feeling of being noticed, or being seen as people now say. I thought, 'I want more of this'.' Dolan, who won an Olivier award for her role in All About Eve along with a Bafta for Appropriate Adult, received several award nominations for Mr Bates Vs the Post Office. She told Laverne how she prepared to play the real-life character of subpostmistress Jo Hamilton in the acclaimed ITV drama series based on the true story of Horizon IT scandal. 'I think you have to slightly put yourself in there,' Dolan said. 'You have to think, well if I was this person, how would I behave? I was very lucky with Jo because she was definitely more approachable than most people that I've played. 'One of the things I did very early on actually which was really helpful, which I'd definitely do again, was to ask her – if it wasn't too intrusive, and I felt with her that I could – to ask her to record her life story. Just a little version – like a 15 minute version – up to the point where the script begins – where it all starts. 'That was really useful, waiting for filming – I could listen to her voice, and I'd have her voice in my head, and also I'd have her background in my head. 'That was very useful indeed because you're kind of absorbing that person.' Dolan also said of those who campaigned for justice following the Post Office scandal: 'I was immensely proud of people, for being that collectively angry.' The actress, who said her luxury item would be a walk-in wardrobe with a cold glass of champagne and a new outfit for every day inside, said she would also like to take a book on flora and fauna on the island so she could identify what she saw. Among her desert island disc choices were her childhood favourite The Tra La La Song (One Banana, Two Banana) from the TV show The Banana Splits, MacArthur Park by Richard Harris, and Us Amazonians by the 'tremendous' Kirsty MacColl.
