Amazon, Apple, Meta and Microsoft earnings rise
Tech giants Amazon, Apple, Meta and Microsoft this week eclipsed earnings expectations, cashing in on artificial intelligence (AI) while navigating economic waters roiled by U.S. tariffs. 'Massive results seen by Microsoft and Meta further validate the use cases and unprecedented spending trajectory for the AI Revolution on both the enterprise and consumer fronts,' Wedbush tech analyst Dan Ives said in a note to investors.
'We have barely scratched the surface of this 4th Industrial Revolution now playing out around the world led by the Big Tech stalwarts such as Nvidia, Microsoft, Palantir, Meta, Alphabet, and Amazon,' Ives added. Amazon reported a 35% jump in quarterly profits as the e-commerce giant said major investments in AI technology are paying off. 'Our conviction that AI will change every customer experience is starting to play out,' said Chief Executive Andy Jassy, pointing to the company's expanded Alexa+ service and new AI shopping agents.
Apple to open its wallet on AI
Apple CEO Tim Cook signaled that the iPhone maker was ready to spend more to catch up to rivals in AI by building more data centers or buying a larger player in the segment. Apple has struggled to keep pace with rivals such as Microsoft and Alphabet's Google which have attracted hundreds of millions of users to their AI-powered chatbots and assistants at a steep cost, with Google planning to spend $85 billion over the next year and Microsoft on track to spend more than $100 billion.
Apple, in contrast, has leaned on outside data center providers to handle some of its cloud computing work, and despite a high-profile partnership with ChatGPT creator OpenAI for certain iPhone features, has tried to grow much of its AI technology in-house, including improvements to its Siri virtual assistant. The results have been rocky, with the company delaying its Siri improvements until next year.
YouTube to use AI to estimate age
YouTube will deploy an age estimation model to detect if U.S.-based users under 18 are using its video sharing platform. Based on the estimation, the platform will provide a safer user experience for the minors. YouTube emphasised that it had followed this approach in other markets ahead of gradual rollout in the U.S. The age estimation model uses signals such as YouTube activity and the longevity of the account to detect whether the user is a minor. If it deciphers the user to be under 18, it will notify them so they can submit a photo-based ID and verify their age.
In case YouTube flags the user as under 18, it will enable the standard protections for teen accounts on YouTube. These include showing only non-personalised ads, enabling 'take a break' and bedtime reminders, showing reminders about privacy when making public actions, and minimising video recommendations that could be 'problematic.'

US defense bill proposes examination of Apple display supplier

A measure added into a massive U.S. defense spending bill in recent weeks will, if passed, ask the Pentagon to determine whether one of Apple's display suppliers should be listed as a Chinese military company . Being on the list does not block companies from doing business in the U.S. but will in coming years block them from being part of the U.S. military's supply chain. The final bill, considered a "must-pass" because it funds the U.S. military, is expected to become law later in the year. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The Most Beautiful Twins in The World! Undo When the bill was approved by the U.S. House of Representatives Armed Services Committee, a newly added amendment for the first time asked the U.S. Defense Department to consider whether BOE Technology Group Co, listed on Apple's official suppliers list, should be added to a list of firms that allegedly aid China's military. BOE and Apple did not respond to requests for comment. Live Events Craig Singleton, a China expert at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, a Washington think-tank, said Beijing had offered billions of dollars in subsidies, tax breaks and loans to help firms such as BOE dominate global panel production. "This creates a single-source vulnerability that could be easily exploited to disrupt or degrade U.S. military operations, not to mention undermine commercial supply chains, during a conflict or period of heightened bilateral tension with Beijing," Singleton added. A study published last month by New York-based NERA Economic Consulting and commissioned by BOE's U.S. subsidiary found that the display industry, which includes major Korean players such as Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics, remains highly competitive, with no single player capable of significantly affecting global prices. "There is no credible risk of a supply chain disruption by mainland China display manufacturers," the report said.

Apple CEO Tim Cook tells staff AI is as big as the internet, vows major investment

Apple CEO Tim Cook held a rare all-hands meeting after the iPhone maker's earnings to rally the company's employees around artificial intelligence and its upcoming 'amazing' pipeline of products, according to a report by Bloomberg. Cook addressed Apple officials at the company's on-campus auditorium where he told them that the AI revolution is 'as big or bigger' than the internet, smartphones, cloud computing and apps. 'Apple must do this. Apple will do this. This is sort of ours to grab,' Cook reportedly told his employees. 'We will make the investment to do it.' He added. Notably, Cook had also talked about Apple being 'open' to mergers and acquisitions during the company's earnings call. Earlier reports have stated that Apple has internally discussed buying AI search startup Perplexity or France's Mistral AI. Apple was months behind OpenAI, Alphabet, Microsoft and others in unveiling its Apple Intelligence features last year. Even after the announcement of these features, the company was not able to deliver them on time for the iPhone 16 launch while many of them also ran into controversy. However, Cook didn't seem too fazed by the patchy and delayed rollout of Apple Intelligence, telling the staffers, 'We've rarely been first.' 'There was a PC before the Mac; there was a smartphone before the iPhone; there were many tablets before the iPad; there was an MP3 player before iPod,' Cook stated. Apple, however, went on to create 'modern' versions of these product categories. 'This is how I feel about AI,' he said. During the hourlong address, Cook discussed a range of topics including the retirement of Apple COO Jeff Williams, increasing Apple TV+ viewership and advancements in health care features like AirPods' hearing-aid technology. There were also talks about donations and community service by Apple employees, the iPhone maker's goal to become carbon neutral by 2030 and the impact of regulations. 'The reality is that Big Tech is under a lot of scrutiny around the world,' Cook stated. 'We need to continue to push on the intention of the regulation and get them to offer that up, instead of these things that destroy the user experience and user privacy and security,' he further added.

Apple signals AI spending surge, open to big acquisitions: Tim Cook

Apple CEO Tim Cook signaled on Thursday the iPhone maker was ready to spend more to catch up to rivals in artificial intelligence by building more data centers or buying a larger player in the segment, a departure from a long practice of fiscal frugality. CEO Tim Cook says Apple ready to open its wallet to catch up in AI(Reuters) Apple has struggled to keep pace with rivals such as Microsoft and Alphabet's Google, both of which have attracted hundreds of millions of users to their AI-powered chatbots and assistants. That growth has come at a steep cost, however, with Google planning to spend $85 billion over the next year and Microsoft on track to spend more than $100 billion, mostly on data centers. During a conference call after Apple's fiscal third-quarter results, analysts noted that Apple has historically not done large deals and asked whether it might take a different approach to pursue its AI ambitions. CEO Cook responded that the company had already acquired seven smaller companies this year and is open to buying larger ones. "We're very open to M&A that accelerates our roadmap. We are not stuck on a certain size company, although the ones that we have acquired thus far this year are small in nature," Cook said. "We basically ask ourselves whether a company can help us accelerate a roadmap, and if they do, then we're interested." Shares of the company were up 1.7% in premarket trading on Friday. Apple has tended to buy smaller firms with highly specialized technical teams to build out specific products. Its largest deal ever was its purchase of Beats Electronics for $3 billion in 2014, followed by a $1 billion deal to buy a modem chip business from Intel. But now Apple is at a unique crossroads for its business. The tens of billions of dollars per year it receives from Google as payment to be the default search engine on iPhones could be undone by U.S. courts in Google's antitrust trial, while startups like Perplexity are in discussions with handset makers to try to dislodge Google with an AI-powered browser that would handle many search functions. Apple executives have said in court they are considering reshaping the firm's Safari browser with AI-powered search functions, and Bloomberg News has reported that Apple executives have discussed buying Perplexity, which Reuters has not independently confirmed. Apple also said on Thursday it plans to spend more on data centers, an area where it typically spends only a few billion dollars per year. Apple is currently using its own chip designs to handle AI requests with privacy controls that are compatible with the privacy features on its devices. Kevan Parekh, Apple's chief financial officer, did not give specific spending targets but said outlays would rise. "It's not going to be exponential growth, but it is going to grow substantially," Parekh said during the conference call. 'A lot of that's a function of the investments we're making in AI.'
