Here's how quickly people started taking robotaxis as Waymo expanded in California

Since its debut to the California public in 2022, Waymo has seen a rapid increase in ridership, showing how humans are increasingly entrusting their lives to robot drivers.
Here are a few numbers that show it.
In March 2022, Waymo provided more than 3,700 rides, according to data published by the California Public Utilities Commission. At the time, Waymo was limited to staff or pre-approved riders in San Francisco. The company would later open a waitlist, allowing limited members of the public to sign up for rides.
The Alphabet company expanded to Los Angeles in November 2024 and other parts of the San Francisco Bay Area in March 2025, increasing the number of rides to 708,180 in the state.
Another way to look at it: When Waymo began offering paid rides in August 2023, the number of rides provided in California was just 12,617.
In less than two years, the number of riders increased by more than 5,500%. In total, Waymo provided more than 5 million rides in three years.
Naturally, the number of traffic incidents also increased.
Between March and May 2022, Waymo reported 17 collisions, the CPUC data showed.
Between January and March 2025, the number of collisions increased to 132.
However, an analysis by Business Insider showed that the rate of collisions decreased significantly when incidents per 100,000 rides were considered.
Between March and May 2022, the rate of collisions was about 147 collisions per 100,000 rides.
Between January and March 2025, when Waymo provided more than 1.8 million rides, the rate decreased to about 7 collisions per 100,000 rides — about a 95% decrease from 2022.
The CPUC data only shows a part of Waymo's overall expansion.
Waymo said that it had provided more than 5 million rides across all operating cities by the end of 2024.
In May, the company said it had surpassed 10 million rides across its operating cities in Phoenix, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Austin.
That means Waymo just about doubled its ridership in less than half a year.
In a recent blog post, the company said it operates 1,500 robotaxis and plans to add 2,000 more by 2026.

A Tesla robotaxi inexplicably drove into a parked car

One of Tesla's fully autonomous robotaxis grazed a parked car after completing a ride recently in Austin, Texas. In a video recorded by YouTuber DirtyTesla, a self-driving Model Y is seen turning and accelerating into a Toyota, making light contact with its tire. As seen in the video, the Model Y already dropped off its passenger, but had trouble navigating out of the dark alleyway afterwards. Tesla's robotaxi service launched in Austin just two weeks ago with a small fleet. According to DirtyTesla, there were no serious injuries or damages and the robotaxi's safety monitor eventually swapped to the driver's seat and drove off. Although the sideswipe was minor, it's unclear what caused the Tesla to drive into the parked car instead of driving off normally after completing the ride. Outside this incident involving another car, other invited guests have shared their unexpected experiences with Tesla's robotaxi service. So far, we've seen the robotaxi service abruptly stop for emergency lights that aren't on the road and briefly drive on the wrong side of a double yellow line. It's important to note that Tesla's self-driving software relies mostly on cameras and artificial intelligence. That's unlike some of its competition, like Waymo, which uses a combination of cameras, lidar and radar for its robotaxi service. However, Waymo isn't without its own incidents, one of which led to a voluntary recall of its fleet in Phoenix, Arizona, following a collision with a telephone pole last year. More recently, Waymo issued another recall for its robotaxis, which were reportedly prone to hit roadway barriers that are harder to see.

Why Wall Street Still Trusts Alphabet's (GOOGL) Google Search, Even With ChatGPT on the Rise

Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOGL) is one of the . On July 2, Truist Securities analyst Youssef Squali reiterated a Buy rating on the stock with a $200.00 price target. The firm is optimistic about Alphabet's upcoming quarterly results as well as its long-term prospects in artificial intelligence. Squali anticipates continued growth across Alphabet's business units, which include search. This is despite investor concerns over Alphabet's search future as new artificial intelligence tools like Perplexity AI and OpenAI's ChatGPT have taken up web traffic that used to go through traditional search engines. Squali expects year-over-year search revenue growth of 8% for the second quarter, which is down from 10% growth in the previous quarter. However, this isn't a significant downfall. 'We believe Google's Search remains one of the most important customer acquisition and growth channels for most advertisers.' A similar growth deceleration is anticipated for Alphabet's YouTube advertising and cloud services segments, which isn't something to be extremely worried about. The real cause of concern is whether Google can sustain its dominance in search. Squali quoted a May report from enterprise SEO company BrightEdge, stating that Google still accounts for more than 90% of the internet search market. Moreover, Google's own AI tool Gemini, is growing strong, which should help the company as AI search expands. 'AI Search remains Google's war to lose.' While we acknowledge the potential of GOOGL as an investment, we believe certain AI stocks offer greater upside potential and carry less downside risk. As Amazon Doubles Down on Robotaxis, Is AMZN Stock a Buy?

The robotaxi industry is becoming increasingly important for investors to watch. Whether we're talking about Tesla (TSLA) and its incredible recovery over the past three months, thanks in large part to its recent robotaxi launch, or Amazon (AMZN) and Alphabet (GOOGL) with their impressive investments in Zoox and Waymo, there's no shortage of mega-cap tech giants playing in the robotaxi sandbox. For now, I am going to focus on Amazon's Zoox investment, and what the company's production updates could mean for its growth prospects in 2025 and beyond. Amazon's $1.3 billion purchase of Zoox in 2020 was an investment that is certainly starting to look like it will pay off… big time. The e-commerce giant has continued to pour more capital into the robotaxi maker, with the hopes of significantly ramping up production capacity at its core San Francisco facility. This facility is expected to be able to produce as many as 10,000 robotaxis per year when at maximum capacity, although right now the Amazon subsidiary is targeting one per day. The reality is that Amazon is an absolute behemoth in the e-commerce and cloud sectors. The tech giant's status in these two markets is going to dwarf any of its other bets in emerging technologies. That's not to say this robotaxi business can't or won't have a meaningful impact on Amazon's bottom line in the years to come. Famously, Amazon's outside investment in building out a cloud infrastructure decades ago was viewed skeptically by many investors, before being accepted as the true cash flow generation machine it is in propelling Amazon stock to its current heights. Amazon's Zoox investment isn't a one-time payment; the e-commerce giant will likely need to continue to pump capital into it to achieve growth and keep up with robotaxi competition. But with a few dozen robotaxis currently on the road and plans for the Amazon affiliate to launch hundreds per year moving forward, the race is on for market share in what could prove to be a highly competitive space. Amazon's ability to really reinforce its core competitive advantageshas driven a valuation that continues to remain elevated relative to the market. But relative to its own historical levels, Amazon's multiples have come down considerably, lending positively to the idea that this is a stock that could have further room to run from here. Analysts appear to agree, with an impressive 47 analysts out of 54 in coverage rating AMZN stock a 'Strong Buy.' And with a consensus price target of $244.41 that implies roughly 5% upside from here, there's certainly no shortage of believers out there who want to continue to remain exposed to the long-term growth Amazon is expected to provide. Plus, its Street-high price target of $305 suggests shares could gain 31% over the next 12 months. That's not a story I want to bet against.
