Indonesia on alert as forest fires escalate in western region
Of the 42 disasters recorded so far this month, 33 are forest and land fires. The fires have spread extensively across Sumatra Island, affecting provinces including Aceh, North Sumatra, Riau, West Sumatra, Jambi, and South Sumatra. In Riau, the most vulnerable and currently burning regencies are Kampar, Siak, Bengkalis, and Rokan Hilir, where more than 100 hectares of land have been scorched.
"The hot and dry weather conditions have increased the risk, especially as rainfall has significantly declined across much of Sumatra," said Abdul Muhari, head of the center for data, information, and disaster communication at BNPB, in Jakarta. Hotspots have also been detected in Central Kalimantan, while fires have been reported at final waste disposal sites in Central Java and East Java.
Separately, the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency office in Riau's Pekanbaru city reported that smoke from forest fires in the province has drifted into neighboring Malaysia. Satellite monitoring shows the smoke crossing the Malacca Strait and reaching parts of the Malay Peninsula. The agency warned that the number of hotspots could continue to rise if the dry conditions persist and the public fails to comply with the ban on land burning.

6.5 magnitude earthquake hits Russia's Kamchatka amid ongoing aftershocks
VLADIVOSTOK, July 22, (Xinhua): A 6.5 magnitude earthquake struck the Avacha Bay area off Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula on Tuesday, as the region continues to experience aftershocks following a series of powerful quakes over the weekend, local authorities reported. According to the Kamchatka branch of the Geophysical Survey of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the quake occurred at 1:59 pm local time (0159 GMT) at a depth of 51.2 km, approximately 170 km from the regional capital Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. Many residents in the city reported feeling the tremor, the agency said on its official Telegram channel. Russia's Emergency Situations Ministry in Kamchatka confirmed that the aftershock was felt with an intensity of up to 4 on the local scale in both Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky and the nearby town of Vilyuchinsk. No tsunami warning was issued following the event. Sunday saw a powerful series of earthquakes across Kamchatka, with the strongest registering a magnitude of 7.6. Videos circulated on social media showed goods falling from store shelves and furniture shaking violently inside homes. After the second major quake on Sunday, authorities temporarily issued a tsunami warning for the Pacific coastal areas, which was lifted a few hours later.

Philippines braces for more rains, severe flooding
MANILA, July 22, (Xinhua): The Philippines has been bracing for heavy rainfall as two low-pressure areas may develop into tropical depressions within the next 24 hours, the state-run weather bureau, PAGASA, said Tuesday. It warned that the prevailing southwest monsoon will continue to bring torrential rains and thunderstorms to various areas, which would cause more flooding, landslides, and other weather-related hazards. On Tuesday, Metro Manila and its adjoining areas remain under a "red" rainfall warning, PAGASA's highest alert level for rainfall, which indicates "serious" flooding is expected in some areas. Due to the downpour of rain, the country's Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin ordered the suspension of work in government offices and classes at all levels on Tuesday in Metro Manila and several other provinces. In Metro Manila, knee-deep floodwaters led commuters to wade through streets in search of rides, while motorists navigated submerged roads to return home. Estimated agricultural losses have surpassed 54 million pesos (about 947,000 U.S. dollars), the NDRRMC said.
