Moment man falls to his death from hot air balloon in harrowing footage
Harrowing footage has captured the moment a man plunged to his death after clinging to the bottom of a burning hot air balloon.
The tragedy unfolded during the First Balloon Festival, in Zacatecas, Mexico, on Sunday. The horrifying clip showed flames consuming the lower half of the balloon mid-flight. Thick black smoke can be seen pouring into the sky - and as the fire intensifies, a lone figure is seen dangling desperately from a rope beneath the blaze, before falling.
The Secretary General of Zacatecas, Rodrigo Reyes Mugüerza, said a participant had "lost his life" after an "unfortunate incident" while on board a hot air balloon.
In a statement posted to social media, Mugüerza said: "Immediately, authorities rushed to the scene to provide care and support to the affected people.
"We have requested the State Prosecutor's Office to carry out the relevant investigations to clarify the facts and disclose responsibilities. We urge all municipal authorities to strengthen their verification mechanisms to avoid such risks during the development of their activities and festivities."
The man, identified only by local news outlet Riviera Maya News as a 40-year-old Luicio N, died from his injuries. He is believed to have been inside the balloon with two other people when the fire broke out while the group were still on the ground.
As reported by the Mirror, Luicio reportedly helped the other two passengers escape but got stuck in the rope while the balloon started to move.
He was then lifted into the air and clung onto the rope several feet below the fire before the fatal drop. The horrifying clip went viral on social media, with many viewers rushing to comment on the tragic incident.
"This man is a hero. That being said. I don't go in hot air balloons for a reason," one person said. "Heartbreaking. His final act was one of courage and sacrifice. May he rest in peace," another wrote.
"What a tragic and heroic story. Luicio's final act of selflessness, trying to save others while facing his own peril, speaks volumes about the strength of the human spirit. RIP to him. His courage will not be forgotten," a third added.
While hot air ballooning carries certain risks, fatal accidents remain extremely rare.
According to data from Gitnux, the mortality rate is less than 0.01% per flight, with only around 1 to 2 accidents per 100,000 journeys - making it statistically safer than many other forms of aviation.

Ella was sadly pronounced dead at the scene, with her parents and younger sister rushed to hospital across the border in Derry. Mum-of-two Natalie, who was in her 20s, was initially taken to Altnagelvin Hospital, but later transferred to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast, where she died from her injuries on Thursday afternoon. Her husband Tyrone is still in a serious condition, but his injuries are not said to be life-threatening. He said: "Words fall short at this time, what can anybody say? They are such a lovely family and so well respected in our local community. It's just devastating. The loss of anybody on our roads is difficult for any community to take. "But the loss of a mother and daughter, particularly given the fact that they are so young, is even more poignant and more difficult to accept. People are just numb and there is very little I can add to that other than to keep them all in our thoughts and prayers." Police are still investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash. The road was closed for examination by a forensics team, but later reopened on Thursday. Officers are appealing for any witnesses to get in touch. Inspector Sean McDaid, Head of the Garda Traffic Corps in Co Donegal, has asked any motorists travelling in the area at the time of the crash who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) to pass it on to investigating Gardaí.

John Belfield jailed after torturing love rival to death as family scream 'rot in hell'
Drug dealer John Belfield has been sentenced for murdering his love rival Thomas Campbell - who was tortured for over two hours, stabbed and strangled. A twisted drug dealer who tortured his love rival to death for two gruelling hours has been sentenced to life in prison amid screams of "rot in hell". Following the verdict at Manchester Crown Court, John Belfield, 31, was met with screams as he was led from the dock. He hired a team to help him kill Thomas Campbell after forming a relationship with Demi-Lee Driver, his killer's ex-partner, reports the Mirror. Belfield had previously denied being one of three people who approached Campbell outside of his home in Mossley, Tameside on July 2, 2022. The 38-year-old was discovered tied up with duct tape on his ankles. Campbell was found with 61 injuries which indicated "restraint" and "asphyxia". He was stabbed and strangled after being taken inside of the property. The group had also covered his genitals in hot liquid. Coleen Campbell, his ex-wife, had fed her former spouse's killers vital information about his whereabouts and was found guilty of manslaughter following a trial in 2023. Reece Steven, who Belfield recruited into the crime, was found guilty of murder. Stephen Cleworth, who Belfield also recruited and planted a tracking device on Campbell's car, was convicted of manslaughter. All were jailed in 2023, reports Manchester Evening News. The third attacker remains unknown and is wanted by police. Belfield evaded police and fled the country two days after the murder. He eventually holed up in Suriname, a former Dutch colony north of Brazil, before he was arrested there in March 2023 and eventually flown back to Manchester a year later. On Thursday July 3, he was found guilty on both counts by jurors, who were unanimous. Belfield got a minimum term of 34 years and 261 days, after having been convicted of murder and conspiracy to rob. Mr Justice Graham, who sentenced John Belfield, described the injuries as nothing short but "horrendous". He said he had no doubt that Belfield "took pleasure in his pain". The judge added: "Thomas Campbell was no saint. Like you, he was involved in the sale and distribution of drugs. He was also a human being. The manner of his death was horrific. His family and friends have had to listen to the description of his injuries. "His father has described his family's prolific grief - it's plain he was greatly loved. I find you, John Belfield, were the leading role in the conspiracy to rob and the attack itself. This gang of thugs, with which you were the leader, attacked Mr Campbell and stole from him the drugs you believed he had. No one knows what exactly happened in Riverside. It cannot be said who delivered the blows with knives, fists or boots.' Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community!

'Perfect' neighbour cut off man's penis and ate it with him before killing him
Armin Meiwes, 42, killed and ate Bernd Brandes, 43, after the latter answered his ad for someone who wanted to be killed and consumed - and now the home where it happened has been burnt down In a horrifying case of cannibalism, a killer devoured his consenting victim over 10 months following a macabre pact between the two. Armin Meiwes infamously consumed Bernd Brandes' flesh with his consent, in a gruesome saga that lasted almost a year. Meiwes had placed a ghastly advertisement titled 'Dinner - or your dinner' on a German internet forum, seeking someone willing to be eaten. Bernd, a 43-year-old engineer, responded to the ad in 2001. Then 42, Meiwes welcomed him to his Rotenburg home in southern Germany. There, Meiwes gave Bernd a powerful mix of sleeping pills and schnapps to numb him before cutting off his penis, which they both ate, reports the Mirror US. As reported by the Mirror, what ensued was another horrific act involving Bernd's back meat. In the documentary Docs: Interview With a Cannibal, Meiwes said: "I took out my best dinner service, and fried a piece of rump steak – a piece from his back – made what I call princess potatoes, and sprouts." Meiwes narrated his initial experience of human flesh as an extraordinary feeling. He said: "The first bite was, of course, very strange. It was a feeling I can't really describe. I'd spent over 40 years longing for it, dreaming about it." He added: "And now I was getting the feeling that I was actually achieving this perfect inner connection through his flesh. The flesh tastes like pork but stronger." In a chilling ritual, Meiwes carefully arranged his dining table with candles, ready to indulge in the forbidden feast he had craved his entire life. Following the meal, Bernd, who was still conscious, was placed in a bath while Meiwes recited from a Star Trek book until he committed the final fatal deed, stabbing Bernd in the throat and ending his life. Meiwes then horrifically butchered his victim and buried the body parts in his garden, saving some of the flesh in his freezer for later consumption over ten months. He was caught in December 2002 and concocted a tale for the police, alleging the meat in his freezer was wild boar. The former IT worker had a long-standing morbid obsession with cannibalism, a dark fantasy that began in his youth. In court, he maintained that the engineer "came to me of his own free will to end his life. For him, it was a nice death." Investigations later revealed that the deceased had an extraordinary wish to be disfigured and had seemingly agreed to Meiwes' gruesome craving as a compromise – fearing that he might be committed if he chose to continue living. Over a month, the duo exchanged messages daily, meticulously crafting their grim agreement, which culminated in Bernd selling his car, wiping his computer clean, and leaving his possessions to his partner via a handwritten note before he left. In January 2004, Meiwes was found guilty of manslaughter and sentenced to eight years and six months behind bars. Following a retrial in May 2006, he was convicted of murder and handed a life sentence, where he remains locked up at the age of 63. In April 2023, an arson attack razed Meiwes' former residence, the scene of the horrific crime, to the ground.
