Man posted about 'heartbreak' of ex-fiancée's death hours after 'murdering' her

A man accused of murdering his ex-fiancée after she told him they wouldn't meet anymore posted on Facebook about his 'heartbreak' at her 'sudden and unexpected' death, a court heard. James Cartwright, 61, is also said to have raped Samantha Mickleburgh, 54, before strangling her at the five-star Pennyhill Park Hotel in Bagshot, Surrey, on April 14 last year. Jurors at Guildford Crown Court heard she had gone there because she 'felt bad for him' and 'didn't want him to feel lonely' on his 60th birthday. Today, it emerged Cartwright posted on Facebook the following morning: 'I am so heartbroken and devastated at the very sudden and unexpected loss of my gorgeous, kind, caring, and loving partner Samantha during the night of my birthday at Pennyhill Park Hotel in Bagshot, Surrey, after such a wonderful and happy evening.' He said, 'I simply do not have the words' and referred to how his 'extreme grief' was shared by Ms Mickleburgh's close family members. Cartwright wrote about how family, friends and colleagues, past and present, would all be 'as shocked and sad as I am at her sudden passing'. He wrote: 'I miss you so much sweetheart and have no idea how I'm going to live without you. You have left such an enormous hole in all our lives. 'Rest in peace my darling. I love you so very much and always will.' Earlier this week jurors were told that Cartwright called 999 at about 8.30am on April 14 claiming he had discovered the lifeless body of Ms Mickleburgh lying next to him in bed. 'That was a lie,' Ms Oakley said. 'He had most likely killed her in the early hours of April 14, 2024, with his own bare hands applying manual pressure around her neck, extinguishing her life.' She added: 'There were only two people in this room – and she couldn't have and didn't strangle herself.' The court heard Ms Mickleburgh had ended her relationship with Cartwright in February 2024. Following their break-up, Cartwright had continued to pursue Ms Mickleburgh, attending her address unexpectedly and uninvited, and 'bombarding her' with messages and calls, Ms Oakley said. 'She had intended at some point to tell him that this was the last time they would see each other,' the prosecutor added. 'Is this what caused James Cartwright's explosion of violence? More Trending 'He had started to lose control of his relationship with Samantha because of his own controlling and coercive ways.' Cartwright, of no fixed address, denies raping and murdering Ms Mickleburgh between April 12 and April 14 last year. He also denies one count of controlling and coercive behaviour between May 1, 2022, and April 14, 2024. The trial continues. Lufthansa CEO's wife 'runs over and kills woman crossing the road' on holiday

The wife of an aviation CEO ran over and killed a 24-year-old woman in Sardinia before she flew back home to Germany. Gaia Costa died after the SUV struck her as she crossed the road on a zebra crossing in Porto Cervo on Tuesday. Vivian Alexandra Spohr, a manager and wife of German aviation company Lufthana's CEO Carsten Spohr was reportedly driving the vehicle. Emergency services spent more than 20 minutes at the scene trying to revive Gaia, but was knocked to the ground and banged her head and died at the scene. Vivian is being investigated for negligent homicide in road traffic, according to Italian outlet La Repubblica. But she returned to Munich as the prosecutor registered her as a suspect. She was in Sardinia on holiday at her family's vacation home. Vivian's lawyers said in a statement: 'Vivian Spohr, who was involved in the tragic death, expresses her dismay and deep regret over this very serious accident.' Mayor Gianni Addis said: 'Gaia was a young woman who was deeply involved in the city's social and cultural life. Boy dies on beach after being buried alive when hole he was digging collapsed

A teenage boy died after a 1.5m hole he dug on an Italian beach collapsed as he crawled into it. The 17-year-old, named as Riccardo, is believed to have suffocated under the weight of the sand at the beach in Montalto di Castro, 56 miles north of Rome. A swimmer who was nearby when the tragedy happened, told local news: 'He had built a tunnel. He wanted to enter from one side and exit from the other. 'But as he passed through, when he reached the centre, everything collapsed and the hole was completely covered. 'You couldn't see anything anymore, you could have walked right through it and not noticed a thing.' Meanwhile a local said there were no screams or sounds as the boy was buried 'in a matter of moments' 'When the sand closes in on you, it's incredibly heavy,' he added. 'It doesn't even let a little oxygen in, and it's not easy to extract people because it tends to collapse. A few minutes later, they die of suffocation.' The boy, from Rome, had been on holiday with his family and had been playing with his younger siblings, aged three and eight, while their father napped. The younger children left the teen to continue digging and when the father realised he was missing, an urgent hunt was launched. The father, swimmers and lifeguards began digging, before emergency services arrived and helped pull the boy from the sand. But it was too late, and he was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. Montalto Mayor Emanuela Socciarelli told ANSA: 'A tragedy that has left us all shocked. More Trending 'It's unthinkable that a young man could lose his life in this way. 'I want to offer my sincere condolences to this family, to whom we are all truly deeply connected.' The local authorities said: 'Deepest condolences for the tragic passing of the young man. In such a time of great grief, we extend our deepest sympathies to the boy's parents and family, affected by this terrible tragedy. 'As a sign of respect, all public events scheduled for Friday, July 11, are suspended. The community of Montalto joins in silent embrace with the family.'
