Security forum seeks support to prioritise men's mental health event
The organisation is preparing for a busy calendar in June, which includes mental health awareness campaigns, a prayer day, and a Father's Day event, all designed to address the often-overlooked emotional struggles faced by men.
Chairperson Jean Jonker has called for assistance in the form of sponsorships, volunteers, venues, and resources to ensure the success of the events.
'We're specifically looking for speakers, mental health professionals, and experts who can offer their time and skills during our men-focused sessions,' said Jonker.
He emphasised that far too many men suffer in silence, grappling with grief, trauma, pressure, or stress without adequate support.
'In June, we want to create a safe space for men to open up, connect, and find strength together,' he said.
'Men's mental health is often neglected, and we hope to change that by bringing in motivational speakers, mental health specialists, and faith leaders who can provide the tools and emotional support they need.'
He said the mental health and support sessions will be open to all men but will certainly welcome women who wish to learn how to support the men facing these challenges in their lives.
'We know that in society, men's mental health is stigmatised, and many will be too ashamed to come themselves, so we encourage their women to accompany them and support them.'
Jonker added that this session will aim to create awareness and build an environment in which men can be supportive pillars for one another.
'However, we need the community's support to make this event a success. We essentially have to create something from scratch, so we will need food for participants, financial contributions for support materials and services, and speakers and experts to offer their skills.'
He added that even if people simply spread the word about this upcoming beneficial event, it will make a difference.
'If people share this and talk about it, more men will show up, and every action creates a ripple of hope and support.'
One of the directors, Malcolm de Klerk, said it is important to make the awareness campaign a success.
'It will essentially help with men's mental health, which is too often overlooked, especially in the community safety space,' he said.

Beloved Pretoria cheetah Njozi undergoes operation
Rietvlei cheetah, Njozi, is currently in the specialised care of the wildlife clinic at the Faculty of Veterinary Science in Onderstepoort, after showing signs of lameness in her right forelimb. The beloved and well-known five-year-old female cheetah is a resident of Rietvlei Nature Reserve. Pretoria residents' hearts opened wholeheartedly when, in a few days, the Friends of Rietvlei's appeal for R50 000 for her operation, hospitalisation and rehabilitation was answered. She was found and captured with the assistance of Jeanri Weideman, a game ranger from Rietvlei. Njozi wears a very high-frequency collar. After she was found, she was darted and radiographed in the field by veterinary wildlife specialist, Prof Katja Koeppel. Chris van Blerk, faculty spokesperson, said radiographs revealed that she had previously fractured two bones in her right forelimb (the radius and ulna), which had healed in the wrong position (a malunion) and fused (sinostosis). 'This deformity limited the movement of her paw and likely caused abnormal stress on the limb. Sadly, this led to a new fracture just above the old injury site,' said Van Blerk. She went into the operating theatre on July 22. Small animal specialist surgeon, Dr Adriaan Kitshoff and a team from the faculty's Onderstepoort Veterinary Academic Hospital (OVAH), performed the surgery. 'In theatre, we corrected both the previous malunion and the recent fracture by removing a wedge of bone and carefully realigning the limb,' said Kitshoff. The bones were then stabilised with two metal plates, and a small bone graft from her shoulder was used to help speed up healing. According to Prof Koeppel, her bandage was changed on July 23. She will be managed and monitored by the team of wildlife veterinarians and students at the Faculty of Veterinary Science's wildlife clinic. Peter Ruddle, chairperson of the Friends of Rietvlei, a NPO supporting the reserve, said the 'public has been fantastic with their response'. He pointed out that they are very glad that all went well with the operation and thanked the team at Onderstepoort. More patients helped with free cancer screenings at west hospital The Pretoria West Hospital was recently visited by The Pink Drive, which was offering free cancer screenings. This was a follow-up on their visit last year, once again promoting a vital campaign that focuses on bringing cancer screening services to communities served by hospitals that lack in-house mammography facilities. Stephina Ramabulana, head of the hospital's X-ray Department, said, 'Last year's visit saw overwhelming demand for mammograms, with only a limited number of patients able to be screened. 'Learning from that experience, the Pink Drive team returned better equipped this year, significantly increasing the number of patients they were able to assist, much to the benefit of the community.' The Pink Drive initiative offers comprehensive cancer screening, including: – Mammograms for early detection of breast cancer – Breast self-examinations – Pap smears for cervical cancer – PSA tests for prostate screening. 'We are also deeply thankful for the collaboration with colleagues from the district health team under the maternal, child and women's health program (MCWH), who came to stand with us and assist as staff during the campaign. 'Their support played a vital role in ensuring the smooth running of the screening process and in managing the increased patient turnout,' Ramabulana continued. She said that the hospital is truly grateful for the continued partnership with the Pink Drive team, the MCWH programme, and all involved stakeholders. She added that the hospital sincerely hopes this collaboration becomes an annual tradition, allowing more patients the opportunity for early detection and timely intervention. 'This initiative is a remarkable collaboration that extends vital healthcare access not only to residents of Pretoria West but also to surrounding clinics and communities. 'As the Head of the X-ray Unit at Pretoria West Hospital, I find it incredibly rewarding to witness patients expressing heartfelt gratitude and encouraging us to continue these efforts. Tshwane boosted with nuclear safety equipment worth millions
Tshwane recently received a much-needed gift from the United States that will see it respond more efficiently to radiological emergency needs. The metro's Emergency Services Department received a significant boost in its emergency response capabilities with the donation of advanced radiation detection equipment. The equipment, valued at approximately R5-million, will enhance the city's capacity to respond to chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear incidents. MMC for Community Safety, Alderman Hannes Coetzee, welcomed the donation, noting that Tshwane, as the capital of South Africa, hosts 138 embassies, national government headquarters, and strategic infrastructure, making well-equipped emergency response essential. 'Tshwane's proximity to the Pelindaba Nuclear Facility further emphasises the need for radiological preparedness,' Coetzee said. He added that the donation from the United States includes personal radiation detectors, backpack detectors, a VeriFinder radiation identification device, and a specialised computer system for the South African Nuclear Energy Corporation (NECSA). 'This equipment fills a critical gap, as the emergency department previously had no radiation detection tools, and lacked the budget to procure them.' He added that in June, 16 officials from the emergency services and four NECSA representatives received hands-on training with the new equipment. 'This follows more than four years of capacity-building partnerships with local and international stakeholders, including Interpol, the South African Military Health Service, and the US Department of Energy.' Coetzee said the initiative was conducted in line with diplomatic protocols and collaboration with the Department of International Relations and Cooperation and the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy. 'This donation is a testament to the strong collaboration between national, local, and international partners in safeguarding our communities,' said Coetzee. 'It also aligns with our administration's strategic focus on strengthening internal capacity.' He expressed gratitude to the US government for its donation to public safety.
