No arrests yet after body of 21-year-old found in Winterveldt

No arrests yet after body of 21-year-old found in Winterveldt No suspect has been arrested for the murder of 21-year-old Thulisile Mhlongo, whose body was discovered on June 26 at a dumping site in Winterveld. She had sustained multiple stab wounds and severe head injuries. According to SAPS spokesperson, Warrant Officer Marinda Austin, 'The deceased was transported to Ga-Rankuwa Forensic Pathology Center and investigations are still ongoing.' Austin urged all young women to remain vigilant and prioritise their safety at all times saying, 'Be cautious of your surroundings, avoid walking alone in unsafe areas, and always inform someone about your whereabouts. Build a strong support network in your own family, and don't hesitate to report any threats or suspicious behaviour to the police.' Rekord spoke to Thulisile's father, Jacky Mhlogo, who said they were first informed of this tragic incident by a person close to their daughter, who had called to tell them that a body had been found at a dumping site in Winterveldt. On receiving this news they went to the dumping site to confirm her identity. 'Upon our arrival, we realised that the lifeless body was indeed of our daughter,' he said, continuing that as he came closer he noticed that Thulisile's body had been stabbed many times. Mhlogo said it will take time for them to come to terms with what happened to their daughter as they are still shocked and in disbelief. He said: 'We had big plans for Thuli and expected great things from her. I work as a driver, and we were planning to buy a truck to start a logistics business, where Thuli would be responsible for overseeing the operations. Now that her life was cut short, we feel completely robbed.' Thulisile's aunt, Nkateko Mhlongo, said the family is distraught over the loss of the young child, adding, 'It is sad, and I am still in disbelief about what happened to my niece'. She urged the police to arrest the person responsiblein order to find closure as the family, as all they want is for justice to prevail. Fuel price hike from Wednesday — Here's what you'll pay

Pretoria motorists will feel the pinch at the pumps from Wednesday as fuel prices are set to rise once again, with both petrol and diesel seeing significant increases driven by higher global oil prices. Here is how much you will pay on Wednesday: *Petrol 93 (ULP & LRP): Fifty-five cents per litre (55.00 c/l) increase. *Petrol 95 (ULP &LRP): Fifty-two cents per litre (52.00 c/l) increase. * Diesel (0.05% sulphur): Eighty-two cents per litre (82.00 c/l) increase. * Diesel (0.005% sulphur): Eighty-four cents per litre (84.00 c/l) increase. * Illuminating Paraffin (wholesale): Sixty-seven cents per litre (67.00 c/l) increase. * SMNRP for IP: Eighty-nine cents per litre (89.00 c/l) increase. According to reports, the fuel price situation in South Africa has been aggravated by a rise in fuel taxes, which came into effect at the beginning of June, leading to smaller-than-expected fuel price decreases that month. ImotoNews said you can save up to 20% on fuel costs by changing your driving habits and maintaining your vehicle. Here's how: Stick to Speed Limits : Driving at 110 km/h instead of 120 km/h can save 15% on fuel. Accelerate Smoothly : Avoid aggressive acceleration to reduce fuel usage by 15-20%. Check Tyre Pressure Weekly : Properly inflated tyres improve efficiency by 3-5%. Remove Roof Racks : Unused racks can increase fuel consumption by up to 25%. Combine Trips : Group errands to avoid multiple cold starts and save 15-20%. Use AC Strategically : Use air conditioning only when necessary to avoid a 20% increase in fuel use. Coast to Slow Down : Use natural momentum to save 5-8% on fuel in city driving. Service Your Car Regularly : Routine maintenance can improve fuel economy by up to 20%. Track Driving Habits : Use apps or tools to monitor and adjust your driving behavior . Remove Extra Weight Clear unnecessary items from your car to improve efficiency by 1-2%. Three Tshwane employees arrested in R7m transformer theft probe

A year-long investigation into the theft of a transformer worth R7 million from the Laudium substation has led to the arrest of three City of Tshwane employees as the Gauteng Organised Crime Unit tightens the net around a suspected infrastructure theft syndicate. Police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said a thorough investigation by Gauteng Organised Crime Unit has led to the arrest of three employees from the City of Tshwane Municipality. 'This arrest follows an ongoing investigation which started last year November, where 11 suspects were initially arrested for stealing a transformer at Laudium substation worth approximately R7 million. 'The 10 suspects who were subcontractors were released after they could not be linked to the crime, and one who is an employee of the municipality remained behind bars and has since made several court appearances and is currently remanded in custody until August 2025.' She said the three suspects arrested today, July 01, 2025, will be charged with theft of essential infrastructure and are expected to appear before Pretoria Magistrates' court tomorrow, July 02, 2025. More arrests are expected as investigations continue. Tshwane District Commissioner, Major General Samuel Thine, has commended the team for their ongoing efforts to deal with this crime. He further assured the public that the police will continue working hard in dismantling the syndicates that target essential infrastructure and related crimes, as this has a detrimental impact on the economy of the country. Elderly man hacked in face during brutal Kameeldrift smallholding attack

An elderly man was hacked in the face with a panga during a brutal smallholding attack in Kameeldrift East in the early hours of Saturday morning. At around 2am, a group of between three and six armed suspects stormed a smallholding on Plot 401, Karee Street in Pumulani, where an elderly couple resides. The attackers broke into the main house and began looting, assaulting the elderly man with a panga before fleeing with multiple stolen goods, including television sets. The victim was rushed to hospital with serious facial injuries. SAPS and forensic teams remain on the scene. The suspects then targeted a second house on the property, where a woman was asleep alone. She was held at gunpoint, a shot was fired inside the home (believed to be a warning), and her walking aid was taken to prevent her from escaping. She is receiving trauma counselling. A gold Toyota Urban Cruiser was stolen, and a spent cartridge and matching bullet casing were recovered in the room. National police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said the police are investigating a case of attempted murder and house robbery after a family was attacked by unknown suspects in their home in Karee Weg, Kameeldrift, this morning. 'According to information received, a husband and wife were sleeping when they were woken by a bang on the door. About five unknown men entered the house and the husband was struck with a sharp object on the face.' She furthermore added that the suspects fled the scene with the victim's Toyota Cruiser and some household items. Police request anyone who may have information that can assist in arresting the suspects to contact their nearest police station or the Crime Stop Line at 08600 10111. Police investigations continue. This is the third violent attack on rural residents in the Pretoria region in just over a week. June 20 – Mooiplaats Farm Attack Five suspects armed with pangas attacked a family on their property in Mooiplaats, Pretoria East. The residents sustained moderate injuries and were robbed of electronics and cell phones. It is believed one of the victim's Achilles tendons was severed with pangas. Echo-1 security teams responded rapidly. In a dramatic shootout near a nearby informal settlement, two suspects were shot — one killed, the other critically injured. Stolen property was recovered. June 25 – Kameeldrift Murder Tragically, Carolina Frederika Dicks was found murdered in her home on Ringduif Street, Kameeldrift. Her vehicle and several belongings were missing. The case is under investigation. Community leaders have urged residents to stay vigilant and connected, especially at night. Police could not yet confirm or provide more information on these two cases. Also read: Here are the most dangerous suburbs in Pretoria Do you have more information about the story? Bootid Meteor Shower: How to see ‘Shooting Stars' tonight

Pretoria skywatchers, get ready — the Bootid meteor shower is expected to peak tonight, and South Africans might be in for a treat just after sunset. Although the June Bootids are known for being unpredictable — with anything from a few to over 100 meteors per hour — the timing works in our favour this year. The best chance to spot 'shooting stars' will be after sunset, once the sky darkens over Gauteng. According to astronomers, the radiant point of the shower lies in the constellation Boötes, which will be high in the western sky just as twilight fades. To find it, look between the bright orange star Arcturus (easily visible in the evening sky) and Alkaid, the star at the end of the Big Dipper's handle. The meteor shower technically peaks around 07:00 SAST on Saturday morning, but with Boötes high overhead on Friday night, your best shot at seeing meteors in South Africa will be from 7pm onwards — especially in dark areas away from city lights. Here are some tips for viewing it tonight: When to watch: Friday night, June, 27, just after 7pm Where to look: High in the western sky, near the bright star Arcturus What to expect: The Bootids are unpredictable — you may see just a few, or a dramatic burst of meteors. So grab a blanket, head somewhere dark, and keep your eyes on the sky — Pretoria might just get lucky with a rare cosmic display this weekend.
