The UNEXPECTED impact of Luis Diaz's Liverpool exit

Yahoo10-07-2025
Will Liverpool cash in on Diaz?
Sporting director Richard Hughes would probably accept €80m for the Colombia international. That would represent sensational value on the wide man - who joined in 2022 for £37.5m and whose contract expires in only two years.

Diaz had a wonderful 2024/25 season - scoring 13 goals and finishing a Premier League champion. But the Reds must ask themselves whether that kind of form is sustainable and if Diaz is worth a new, improved contract.
It doesn't appear so right now and so a sale seems the most likely option. Liverpool could opt to fund a striker deal with the proceeds of any Diaz sale - with Darwin Nunez heavily linked with an exit of his own.
Liverpool probably won't sign winger
And if the former Porto winger departs, it's not certain that the Anfield club would go for a like-for-like replacement.
Arne Slot has augmented his wide threats in the summer window thus far - with Milos Kerkez a marauding left-back and Jeremie Frimpong set to take over on the right flank.

Florian Wirtz, too, can be expected to move slightly wider in the line-up if Slot intends to keep Dominik Szoboszlai in the team.
And with the club having spent around £200m so far this summer - with other priorities still needing to be addressed - a winger chase might well be put on hold.

Could Chiesa stay?
The unexpected upshot of all of that is that Federico Chiesa could end up staying at Liverpool for another season at least.
The 27-year-old totalled barely 400 Premier League minutes last season and was linked with the exit as early as January. He's got a contract until 2028 having sealed a transfer from Juventus last September and cost the club only £12.5m in a bargain deal.

Liverpool fans have taken the Italy winger to their hearts but it's only fair to say that they are still waiting to see the best of him.
Ordinary displays - such as in February's FA Cup fourth round defeat to Plymouth - damaged his reputation and it looked certain the club would seek to offload him this summer.
But no such move has come to materialise.

Napoli chance disappearing
Serie A sides are either reluctant or unable to pay his £120k per week salary and No1 suitors Napoli are moving elsewhere for wing targets. PSV playmaker Noa Lang is imminent while a move for Dan Ndoye of Bologna is still live for the Italian champions.

That means Chiesa is running out of destinations and therefore Hughes and Slot may opt to keep him around.
He is not going to be expected to start with Mo Salah and Frimpong ahead of him on the right. But he could be a useful element in bulking out the squad for the campaign ahead - capable of filling in on either wing as well as a No10.

A second chance for Chiesa
Furthermore, the reported €15m or so that Liverpool would seek in a transfer fee is not going to have a seismic impact in funding new players.
And the former Fiorentina man may well be worthy of a second chance. Chiesa was unable to join the squad straight away after joining, effectively undergoing a mini-preseason of his own.

Then he struggled with various knocks and niggles, failing to make an impact in his rare outings. But with the club back to work as of this week, Chiesa will have the chance to hit the ground running for the first time.
The Premier League's history is littered with players who did not shine in their first seasons but ended up making good careers for themselves. Who knows, given Diaz's imminent exit and Liverpool's transfer priorities lying elsewhere, Chiesa could be next.

Stellantis warns of $2.7 billion loss for 1st half of 2025 due to tariffs and some big charges

Stellantis, the maker of Jeep and Ram vehicles, says its preliminary estimates show a 2.3 billion euros ($2.68 billion) net loss in the first half of the year due to U.S. tariffs and some hefty charges. The automaker anticipates an impact of about 300 million euros for net tariffs incurred, and also expects planned production losses related to implementing its response plan. Stellantis also expects approximately 3.3 billion euros ($3.84 billion) of pre-tax net charges mostly related to program cancellation costs and platform impairments, restructuring and the net impact of recent legislation eliminating the CAFE penalty rate. Automakers have been penalized if the average fuel economy of a their annual fleet of vehicle production exceeds a certain level. Two months ago Stellantis named Antonio Filosa as its new chief executive officer. He replaced Carlos Tavares, who resigned under pressure last year. Stellantis, which was created from the 2021 merger of France's PSA Peugeot with Italian-U.S. carmaker Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, is the world's fourth-largest car manufacturer. It is based in the Netherlands. The automaker provided preliminary financial figures on Monday in the absence of financial guidance, which it suspended in April. Breakup Blues Are Fuelling a Surge in Hair Transplant Travel, Says Clinic Prime

British Men Are Quietly Booking Hair Transplants After Breakups — And Flying to Turkey to Do It LONDON, July 21, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Breakups hurt — but for a growing number of British men, the fix isn't a pint with the lads or a new tattoo. It's a fresh hairline. And they're flying to Turkey to get it done. Clinic Prime , a UK-focused cosmetic medical provider based in Istanbul, reports a sharp uptick in bookings from recently single men. These patients aren't just chasing aesthetics — they're seeking closure, control, and confidence. "We've heard it dozens of times now: 'I just split up, and it's time to do something for me,'" said Sam, UK Representative for Clinic Prime. "It's a quiet form of self-reinvention." Why Post-Breakup Hair Transplants? Relationship endings often trigger a desire for change — new routines, new goals, new hairlines. Clinic Prime says the pattern is clear: most of these men had never seriously considered a procedure until their breakup. Now, a growing number are opting for hair transplant Turkey services that offer medical precision at a fraction of the UK cost. Studies show that post-breakup life changes are common, especially among men in their 30s and 40s. Swiss sight deposits jump spurs talk of central bank currency intervention

By John Revill ZURICH (Reuters) -Cash lodged by commercial banks overnight with the Swiss National Bank rose to its highest level in 15 months last week, data showed on Monday, sparking speculation the central bank could be intervening to weaken the Swiss franc. Total sight deposits held by the SNB increased by 11.2 billion Swiss francs ($14.00 billion) to 475.3 billion francs, the highest level since April 2024. Normally an increase can be seen as a sign the SNB is buying foreign currencies from banks and crediting their accounts with newly created francs, a way to weaken the safe-haven currency whose high value has weighed on inflation. The SNB declined to comment on the data. GianLuigi Mandruzzato, an economist at EFG Bank, said the increase could mean the SNB intervened last week, although other factors could be involved. "With interest rates at zero and with the SNB reluctant to go negative, intervention is likely to be its favoured approach," he said. Maxime Botteron, an economist at UBS, said the sight deposit rise could signal interventions, although other explanations were more likely. "They could have intervened, but there was no urgent need to do so," he said. "The franc appreciated moderately against the euro last week, but did not reach the April high, and I don't think the SNB would intervene against the dollar." Instead, Botteron said the increase in sight deposits could reflect the expiration of SNB bills, where the principal is repaid to the banks who bought them at the end of their term and the money credited to their sight deposit accounts. The money could also be due to the SNB not rolling over existing repos, and instead repurchasing the instrument from banks and crediting their sight deposit accounts, Botteron said. Karsten Junius, chief economist at J. Safra Sarasin, doubted the SNB was intervening, with the sight deposit data more likely showing the SNB scaling back its use of bills and repos. "If they are reducing the use of these instruments, it could be because the SNB is trying to steer the SARON lower by taking less liquidity out of the market," he said, referring to the Swiss interbank rate.
