
Ninja Gaiden 4's gory combat hides a goofy center
Ninja Gaiden 4 was one of several games that Xbox showed off in its games showcase over the weekend. And during its Summer Game Fest-adjacent in-person preview event, I got the chance to play it for myself. I've never played Ninja Gaiden before and was skeptical that the game's generic dark aesthetic, which feels straight out of 2012, could capture my interest. But after a short hands-on demo and an interview with the game's developers, I'm less wary and powerfully intrigued.
Despite the '4' in the title, Ninja Gaiden 4 represents a soft reset for the franchise. You play as Yakumo, a ninja of the Raven Clan, who must save Tokyo from corruption. The game feels like a hack-and-slash beat 'em up with extreme emphasis on the hacking and slashing. Yakumo uses a number of weapons and abilities at his disposal, including swords, throwing knives, and an ability that briefly transforms him into a demonic raven for an extra burst of power.
My time with the demo was short, consisting of Yakumo ninja-flipping through ruined city streets, fighting packs of cybernetic demons. In combat, you can string together attacks, producing visually impressive combos. One of the things that I most appreciated about the combat system was that it included one of my favorite moves in any action game — an air recovery ability. If you're hit into the air, you can quickly tap a button to right yourself and get back into the fight rather than get knocked away. Whoever at Team Ninja / PlatinumGames is a Kingdom Hearts fan, I see you.
Also, along the way, I encountered a number of Yakumo's allies (including one voiced by Brandon ' Garrus Vakarian ' Keener, whose voice I'd know anywhere) who introduced me to the world, giving me power-ups and combat advice.
This game is bloody, cartoonishly so. Once I've whittled down my enemies' health, I can dismember them in a number of increasingly brutal ways. It was so over the top that it veered into absurd territory, and I found myself laughing out loud in an otherwise quiet demo room. I wondered if the tension between the hardcore seriousness of Yakumo and his friends versus the goofy violence was intentional, but according to the developers, the game is working as intended.
' Ninja Gaiden has always been known as a very violent game, but we didn't want to just make it grotesque,' says Yuji Nakao, game producer and director at PlatinumGames, speaking through a translator. 'Because if we did that, you'd get tired of it.'
Team Ninja partnered with PlatinumGames to develop the title, and the inclusion of the studio that made Bayonetta informs a bit of that tonal dissonance. Bayonetta is campy and fun, and I can see elements of that camp in Ninja Gaiden 4.
'When we were working with PlatinumGames,' says Masakazu Hirayama, the producer and director at Team Ninja. 'We wanted to bring their unique style approach to the action genre and inject that into the series.'
Unless you count ports, remasters, or spinoffs, it's been more than 12 years since the last original title in the Ninja Gaiden series. In that time, a new crop of gamers, who are probably more familiar with Bayonetta, have come up. Meanwhile, there's still an older generation running around with memories of Ryu Hayabusa and Ninja Gaiden Black. The result of the partnership between PlatinumGames and Team Ninja is a game that has elements that'll appeal to different generations of players.
' Ninja Gaiden is about having a very diverse tool set that allows you to feel like that ultimate super ninja,' says Hirayama. 'And I think you'll see that the new protagonist and his new tool set opens up a lot of new possibilities.'
The new game may not seem like the most exciting of titles if you're not a long-time fan of the series. But my skepticism of the game was slashed away in the face of an over-the-top gorefest that seems to take itself seriously but is hiding a soft, goofy center that wound up being really fun to play. Ninja Gaiden 4 comes out on Xbox, PlayStation, and PC on October 21st.

‘The Waterfront' Dethroned In Netflix's Top 10 List By A New Show
The Waterfront Well, it's that time. The Waterfront had its run on top of Netflix's top 10 list, but now it's been capsized by a show that it was never going to be able to escape. That, of course, is the return of Squid Game for its third and allegedly final season. Squid Game season 1 remains the most-watched season of any show in Netflix history. Squid Game season 2 is inside the top 5. I expect season 3 will probably top 2, and now it's arrived with a six-episode finale run. There was a zero percent chance it wouldn't arrive at #1, and here we are. The Waterfront has had a solid run since its debut, starting at #1 and continuing until this dethroning that was always going to happen. If Squid Game did not show up, I imagine it would have remained in that spot for some time. It's a great start for the series that is angling for a second season, and as I've said before, I absolutely believe that will happen as Netflix looks to fill the water-based crime series hole left by Bloodline and Ozark, both of which ran for multiple seasons. It's only a matter of time until we hear the same for The Waterfront. Squid Game Squid Game? It's shown up with slightly better critic scores than season 2 but worse audience scores, dropping from a 61% to a lower 53%. I'm only halfway through, but I'm not sure why. Episode 2 was easily one of the best entries in the entire series. Again, this is the final season, but its creator has a clear idea for a spin-off that takes place between seasons 1 and 2 and has not ruled out a potential sequel either, he says. The rest of the list has Ginny and Georgia performing extremely well, given how long ago it aired. It was already renewed for a fourth season ages ago, so there is no waiting around for that news. America's Sweethearts: The Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders series seems to be one of Netflix's more popular reality series these days, and I can't imagine why. Expect it to return. Two licensed shows are doing well, Animal Kingdom and Blindspot, which arrive with six seasons and five seasons, respectively, for viewers to chew through. The question now is how long will Squid Game season 3 stay on top. If it's any less than two weeks, I'd be a bit surprised, as Netflix has cleared its release slate for a while for this reason. Squid Game's uneven season 3 leaves the door wide open
The third and final season of the industry-defining Squid Game confidently delivers each new round of the deathly games with spectacularly brutal aplomb — but its attempts at worldbuilding are disappointingly tired and uneven. Some of Squid Game's most interesting dynamics from the first two seasons — the politics among the masked guards, the organ-harvesting operation, the relationship between Front Man/In-ho (played by Lee Byung-hun) and brother Jun-ho (Wi Ha-jun), the crew of burly men led by Jun-ho trying to uncover and infiltrate the island hosting the games — screech to frustratingly lackluster conclusions, without enlarging the world beyond what we have already seen so far. A new season of any show should always aim to ask new questions. For Squid Game, there are plenty to choose from. What is the selection process like for guards, and how do they get promoted up the hierarchy into the 'triangle' sergeants or, eventually, the 'square' leaders? What are their inner politics like? What other things happened between brothers In-ho and Jun-ho before In-ho joined the games? If Jun-ho's crew manages to infiltrate the island, will the games be stopped? How will that happen? Who are these English-speaking VIPs, really? Have there been occasions in the past where the games were nearly publicly exposed? However, the third season's worldbuilding efforts remain frustratingly unimaginative for the most part, although the season's final 10 minutes deliver some of its most glorious moments that take place outside the games. They're so intriguing that it makes you wonder why we didn't just start there. The third season picks up several threads from where the previous left off (season 3 functions more as a second part to season 2 than a standalone season). Jun-ho and his crew remain adamant about finding the island, while loyal helper Woo-seok (Jun Suk-ho) claims a stake in one of the show's more exciting scenes when trying to uncover the boat captain's past. There is one plotline between North Korea-born guard No-eul (Park Gyu-young) and another trooper, with the game's top-ranking guard getting pulled into the scuffles. Yet, these endeavors are unevenly fleshed out and don't enlarge the Squid Game universe much. Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk seems to be at his best when directing the action-filled contests, which feature children's games like Jump Rope and Hide and Seek in this season. From the vertigo-inducing, towering game of Jump Rope to long shots down Hide and Seek's labyrinthian corridors of seemingly endless doors and rooms in arresting colors, Hwang is a magician of fear, suspense, and relief. In the throes of the games' battleground, the alchemy of circumstantial trust, forged and broken alliances, and flashes of humanity reminds viewers of all the elements that made Squid Game such a global hit when it first premiered in 2021. The very best part of Squid Game also grows into its biggest curse: it is a show that just works so well with an ensemble cast. Beyond headliner Gi-hun/Player 456 (Lee Jung-jae), other characters — like the cold, calculative crypto bro Myung-gi (Yim Si-wan), strong-willed and heavily pregnant Jun-hee (Jo Yu-ri), eager but self-doubting Dae-ho (Kang Ha-neul), former marine Hyun-ju (Park Sung-hoon), unpredictable but captivating Nam-gyu (Roh Jae-won), and mother-son duo Geum-ja (Kang Ae-sim) and Yong-sik (Yang Dong-geun) — all pull their weight. Part of the third season's unsteady steps can be pardoned on the basis that some of the characters that audiences are most invested in just… die, due to the nature of the show as a survival game. This is amplified particularly in this season, as more than three quarters of the players have already been eliminated. The spectacle and extravaganza of Squid Game thrives on the cacophony of 456 desperate but complex humans decked out in their blocky green tracksuits taking on their lives' biggest chance at redemption in the games arena. It is the brilliant clash of gallows humor, personalities big and small, and a hundred different value systems that has propelled much of the show's momentum. As the players are killed off, the dormitory empties out and the show needs to turn elsewhere to find its verve and momentum. While this presents an opportunity for the story to become more intimate, fleshing the remaining characters out with greater depth, Squid Game suddenly becomes uncharacteristically too timid to tread these waters. The third episode, titled 'It's Not Your Fault,' is the show's most affecting one, and perhaps its strongest. The boisterous arena of games gives way to sincere emotional exchange. As the games claim their victims, some of the surviving characters utter the phrase 'it's my fault' in their despair. They grapple with an overbearing guilt that their personal survival has come at such great cost, and also blame their own missteps and shortcomings that brought them to the games in the first place. Yet, amid all the pain and hurt, the episode makes way for expressions of profound grace and wisdom. While Gi-hun has turned nearly mute, burning with unspeakable rage and guilt after an unsuccessful and expensive rebellion (which we saw in season 2), it is in this episode that he speaks the most, in trying to find connection and catharsis. One sagely character muses to Gi-hun, 'No matter how you look at it, life just is unfair. Bad people do bad things, but they blame others and go on to live in peace. Good people, on the other hand, beat themselves up about the smallest things.' Contextualized in the show's wider critiques of unchecked capitalism and inequality, this episode brings the question of guilt into sharp relief. As much as the game fashions its own heroes and losers, victors and victims, everyone who is a participant here is ultimately a casualty of society in the 'real world' outside the games. Some are born into poverty or into broken families. Others cannot find help for their drug or gambling addiction. Some just never had the best cards to start life with. Who is really at fault? While the third episode flows smoothly in its plot and character development, the same cannot be said for many other parts of the season. Some of the season's plot twists will also prove divisive among audiences — for example, a new player is unceremoniously introduced into the games without being able to give their consent, or even participate in each round of voting. This introduces a remarkably new dynamic among the players, although the player's participation may make for uncomfortable viewing at times. The show changes gears in its final minutes, when it picks up the pace dramatically. It also ends in a way that opens up many new directions for future Squid Game spinoffs, which feel like an inevitability at this point. With such a big prize to be won, it's hard to imagine Netflix staying away from one of its most lucrative series for long. Squid Game season 3 is streaming on Netflix now.

How Are ‘Squid Game' Season 3's VIPs Still This Awful?
Squid Game I am currently halfway through season 3 of Squid Game, which was released yesterday and is (maybe) the final run of the series. I think it's quite good so far, and episode 2 in particular is easily one of the best of the entire show. However, by episode 3, you run into an old, hard-to-believe problem: the arrival of the VIPs in their gold animal masks that have the absolute worst dialogue and delivery of the entire series. It's to the point where it's so jarring it takes you out of the entire episode, which is filled with compelling performances from its Korean cast. Spoilers follow. The question is…how did this happen again? After the VIPs were lambasted in the wake of season 1, how did they get this group of villains so wrong yet again? This time, there's an American, a Brit or two and possibly a woman from Japan. The difference this time is that they got to 'participate' in the second game by being part of the clean-up crew that goes around shooting players who failed the game. The dialogue is horrific. It's not just the writing, which is, in fact, terrible; it's the delivery and the fact that this is English dialogue that somehow sounds like it's dubbed over itself to make it sound like someone recording separately from a sound booth. Which, for whatever reason, is probably what happened. Squid Game These are the exact same complaints about the season 1 VIPs, and while there is some speculation this is done on purpose to be campy like past genre films, that does not seem to be the case. There was actually an interview done with one of the actors who explained why this was so weird and bad. This is from the Guardian and ran shortly after season 1 was released: 'It's different for every show, but non-Korean performers often act with dialogue that is translated by a non-native – sometimes even by Google Translate – so it can sound unnatural,' he says. 'Often we don't have the scripts for the rest of the show,' he adds. 'We are only given our scenes, so we have no idea of the tone.' 'We were all wearing very heavy plaster masks, and sitting on couches that were at least 20-30ft away from the closest VIP. We all had to yell our lines vaguely into the air, which added to the weird tonality of the delivery.' That sounds like exactly what's still happening, right down to the distance between the VIPs, and it's impossible to imagine there was no way to fix this from season 1. The explanations are that they did it on purpose and left it this bad despite the blowback, or they simply screwed up again and did not learn their lesson.
