Ryder Cup hopefuls face 'two biggest weeks'
'McIlroy Masters win great for morale'
Donald is the first European captain to lead two successive teams since Bernard Gallacher in the 1990s - defeats at Kiawah Island in 1991 and at the Belfry in 1993 were followed by victory at Oak Hill in New York state in 1995.After leading the team to victory in Rome two years ago Donald says he now has an insight into what is required to win away from home - something Europe has not achieved since the 'Miracle of Medinah' 2012, while the US have not won on European soil since 1993."The guys wanted me to come back and to have another chance," said the 47-year-old Englishman. "Not many people have ever had that chance and certainly I understand that it's a great honour and a great privilege, but also a very tough challenge being in New York."It's hard to win away Ryder Cups but having the continuity of a repeat captain, a lot of the guys know me, know how I work."They already trust in my abilities to lead them and I'm happy, in general, with how things are shaping up. You're always continually trying to learn. "It needs a little bit of a different approach, especially with how to deal with the crowd."That's really my role - getting them into a good frame of mind and giving them the reasons why I think they can win."This season there have been five European winners of PGA Tour events, including McIlroy who joined the list of Grand Slam winners when he became Masters champion at Augusta in April."What Rory did at the Masters is great for our team, for our morale," added Donald. "He's always going to be an amazing leader inside the team room as a player."It's just so many consistent weeks where the top, top guys seem to be playing at a high level. You need that ultimately if you want to win. Without that, it's almost impossible."

Liverpool boss Arne Slot and defender Andy Robertson lay flowers at Anfield in tribute to Diogo Jota after his tragic death - as fans sign mural to the club's beloved 'Forever 20'
Liverpool manager Arne Slot, his wife Mirjam and Reds defender Andy Robertson paid their respects to Diogo Jota at Anfield following his tragic death last week. As the men's first team squad returned to pre-season training on Tuesday, the Slots and Robertson added their tribute to the sea of eulogies paid to club's No 20, laying flowers and penning heartwarming messages. FSG CEO of football Michael Edwards was also pictured at Anfield paying his respects, having joined Slot, Robertson and several members of the Reds squad at the funeral for Jota and his younger brother Andre, who was also killed when their car crashed in the early hours of Thursday morning in northern Spain. The accident came just 11 days after Jota had married childhood sweetheart Rute Cardoso, also 28, who is the mother of his two sons Dinis, four, and Duarte, two as well as his baby daughter Mafalda, who is just eight months old. The devastating news has left the footballing world in shock and several stars were present at Jota and his brother's funeral on Saturday. At Anfield on Tuesday, Slot was joined by his wife as he laid flowers for the player who scored the first goal of his reign at the club. 'Diogo, we had the same dream and we fulfilled it together,' began the poignant message from the Dutch boss on behalf of his family. 'Andre and yourself will forever be in our hearts. Arne, Mirjam, Isa and Joep.' In the hours following Jota's devastatingly sad death, one of the most heartbreaking tributes came from his friend Robertson, who revealed the affectionate nickname 'MacJota' he had for the Portuguese striker. The Scotland captain began his message with the loving moniker, writing: 'Our hearts are broken but feeling very grateful for the memories you gave us all! I will miss you. Love you brother, Robbo.' Jota will be forever loved by Liverpool fans for his contribution during his five years on Merseyside. He made 182 appearances for the Reds and netted 65 times, while he provided 26 assists. He was part of the Liverpool squad that won the Premier League title last season and previously won the FA Cup and two League Cups. In addition to the floral tribute laid by fans in the days following his death and the scores that signed books of remembrance since the unfortunate event, supporters have begun to sign a mural in memory of the striker a short distance from the ground. Situated on Sybil Road, the mural, marked by the words 'Forever 20' on one side and 'His name is Diogo - in reference to his song - on the other, has been populated by messages from from supporters still coming to terms with the loss of a fan favourite and, in time, a quality footballer. Situated on Sybil Road, the mural is marked by the words 'Forever 20' on one side and 'His name is Diogo - in reference to his song - on the other The car is said to have burst into flames, with the brothers tragically unable to be saved. Dutch star Vivianne Miedema sends warning to girlfriend Beth Mead as long-term partners prepare to face each other in England's crunch Euros clash with the Netherlands
The Sarina Wiegman derby takes centre stage this evening and the stakes are sky high. The Dutch coach is in unfamiliar territory after defeat to France on Saturday cost her the first group-stage defeat in her major tournament career and the Lionesses' first in 10 years, with England now on the precipice of a shock exit after back-to-back finals under Wiegman – Euro 2022 and the 2023 World Cup. The permutations are complicated but ultimately anything less than a win takes it out of England's hands. A defeat would be disastrous, and this could statistically end up becoming the worst title defence in women's Euros history. It's difficult to overstate the fallout if England fail to beat the Netherlands. The Lionesses have been front and centre of this tournament. Turn on any television in Switzerland and England's stars are advertising mobile phones or soft drinks while Alessia Russo peers down from Zurich billboards alongside Spain's mega-star Aitana Bonmati. And Wiegman was on expert damage control yesterday. Transitioning seamlessly between her native Dutch and English, the 55-year-old coach from The Hague reminded the world that France are a world-class team and England are in the toughest of groups. 'It's a football game, and the outcome, of course, has consequences, but that was the same at the Euros final and the World Cup final,' she said. 'So then we bring it back to what do we have to do? And the focus is on what actions do we have to take to play our best, and that's the conversations that we have with the players. That's what we train.' Wiegman, who won this tournament as head coach of tonight's opponents in 2017, has plenty of insider knowledge of the threat that the Dutch can bring, with many of the current squad integral to that triumph eight years ago. None more so than Vivianne Miedema, the all-time WSL record goal scorer and girlfriend of Lioness star Beth Mead. Mead has clarified that the two have not been trading insider knowledge ahead of their match - 'We keep in contact but when it gets closer to our games, we don't talk about football whatsoever,' the Arsenal winger has previously said – but is well aware of the threat her long-term partner poses to her dreams of retaining the Euros title. Miedema has struggled for consistency since moving to Manchester City this season but was back to her best against Wales in the opening group stage game with a stunning effort from 18 yards out – her 100th goal in her 126 appearances for her national team. Not one of them has come from the penalty spot. The Dutch forward came out firing, insisting that the pair will 'not be friends tomorrow,' adding: 'I will do everything I can to win tomorrow. If I have to do something that is not good for Beth, then I will do it.' The 28-year-old is not only the only player on this Dutch side who can cause the Lionesses problems, with there being other hugely influential WSL stars within their ranks. Amongst them are Arsenal's Champions League winning goalkeeper Daphne van Domselaar, who was rushed back from injury for the final such is her importance to that team, as well as Gunners midfielder Victoria Pelova and City's departing No 10 Jill Roord. But Wiegman and England striker Alessia Russo towed the party line that their preparations for the upcoming game have been focused purely on themselves – and not on their familiar opponents. 'We're aware that they have lots of talented players but we've more been looking at ourselves and how we can best prepare,' Arsenal's Golden Boot winner said. England have been able to bounce back from situations like this before, such has been their inconsistent form coming into this tournament. Disappointing performances against sub-par sides have been met by dazzling displays against the likes of Spain and United States. 'It's a big part of what we are as a team,' Russo added. 'We have players that can create something out of nothing. 'I think making sure that everyone's in a good headspace going into that game tomorrow is important, and that's what we've been doing as a team. Ultimately, we have a game plan, but we've got individuals who can create a bit of magic as well.' Here there is no margin for error, and tonight we can really see what this 'new England' is all about.
