Gregg Popovich 911 call reveals distressing moment legendary NBA coach was 'barely responding'

Daily Mail24-05-2025
The 911 call of the moment legendary NBA coach Gregg Popovich was 'barely responding' at a restaurant last month has come to light.
TMZ revealed details of the panicked call made by a man at Ruth's Chris Steak House in San Antonio on April 15.
The former Spurs coach, 76, was rushed to hospital after the incident which occurred just six months after he had a mild stroke.
Worrying footage later emerged of the five-time NBA champion lying on a stretcher and being placed into an ambulance after reportedly fainting.
In the audio, you can hear the man tell the 911 operator that Popovich, who he didn't identify, had just passed out.
Describing Popovich as a 'guest', the man said he was 'non-responding' before later changing his phrasing to 'barely responding.'
Moments later, he noted that Popovich was starting to come around.
'Ok. He's responding now,' the man says. 'He passed out for a little bit.'
Popovich suffered a stroke before the Spurs-Timberwolves game on November 2 and was replaced by Mitch Johnson for the final 77 games of the season.
He left fans concerned in recent weeks when he made his first public appearance in six months.
As Johnson was formally introduced as the team's new head coach, Popovich - who will be moving upstairs to the role of team president - revealed a shirt reading 'El Jefe' as he displayed his trademark wit.
But Popovich still showed some signs of his health issues, as he grabbed onto his former player Manu Ginobili at one point when turning around, while another one of his ex-Spurs stars, Tim Duncan, carried a cane for him.
He also spoke far more softly than he has in the past, as he said his health was improving.
Popovich, who has more wins than any other coach in the history of the NBA, led Team USA to Olympic gold at the 2020 Tokyo games.

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce finally go 'Instagram official' with 13 sweet snaps

After months of dating, Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce have finally gone 'Instagram official' with their relationship, sharing a series of loved up snaps online After months of fan excitement and keeping a relatively low profile about his love life, Travis Kelce has finally taken things to the next level and made his relationship with pop star Taylor Swift official on Instagram. ‌ The Kansas City Chiefs' tight end embraced the modern tradition of confirming a relationship via social media, offering fans a glimpse into their blossoming romance. On Thursday, Travis shared a series of photos documenting their summer adventures together in what marked a huge milestone in their relationship journey so far. ‌ Travis, who boasts 6 million followers on Instagram, posted a collection of snaps from their recent holiday. The images showcased various moments of their relationship, from boat trips to dining at upscale restaurants. ‌ One photo captured the couple enjoying a snowy landscape, while another showed them sharing a moment on an ice rink. In one particularly sweet image, Taylor is seen tenderly holding Travis's face as they pose with friends. Captioning the post, Travis wrote: "Had some adventures this offseason, kept it 100.", reports the Express. ‌ As soon as the post was live, fans and fellow celebrities flooded the comments section, expressing their delight at this significant step in the couple's relationship. Former NBA player Chandler Parsons chimed in with: "the hard post !" acknowledging that this was the first time Taylor had featured on Travis' Instagram feed. Betty Crocker, the baking behemoth, also couldn't resist chiming in, suggesting the post might just "break the internet." ‌ Among the collection of images, one specific photo caught the sharp eyes of fans, as it unveiled that Kelce's phone lock-screen is a snapshot of the smitten pair. In a discreet tribute to TayTay, the post included a total of 13 images, which happens to be Taylor's lucky number. ‌ The 35-year-old pop superstar and American footballer Travis have been an item since September 2023 and it seems they are as hungry for each other as always. The couple have supported each other on the road - with Travis, 35, tailing Taylor on her epic Eras World Tour which finally climaxed at the end of last year, and she attending games he played for his team, the Kansas City Chiefs. The couple have been reasonably happy to talk about their romance - with Travis occasionally talking about his girlfriend on his podcast, New Heights, which he co-hosts with his brother Jason Kelce, 37. And Taylor has declared her love to Travis while on stage and collecting awards. However up until now, the couple have never officially confirmed their romance on social media, making Travis' photo carousel all the more poignant.

GSK's blood cancer drug gets EU approval

July 24 (Reuters) - The European Union has approved GSK's (GSK.L), opens new tab drug Blenrep to treat relapsed or treatment-resistant forms of a cancer affecting blood plasma cells, the British drugmaker said on Thursday. EU regulators approved Blenrep after phase III trials showed the drug, when used in combination with standard treatments, extended progression-free survival and improved overall survival in patients with relapsed or refractory multiple myeloma, GSK said. The approval comes a day after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration extended its review of the drug as a combination treatment for the same illness. The FDA's panel of independent experts had last week recommended against the drug, citing concerns about previously documented risks of eye-related side effects. The EU approval marks the sixth regulatory nod for Blenrep combinations, with applications still under review across all major markets. The drug delivers a cell-killing agent directly to tumour cells while limiting damage to healthy tissue — unlike conventional chemotherapy. Multiple myeloma is the third most common blood cancer globally and is generally considered treatable but not curable. It affects the immunity-boosting plasma white blood cells.

Claressa Shields-Laila Ali: Will the GWOAT and Muhammad Ali's daughter finally fight?

Boxing 's self-proclaimed GWOAT (Greatest Woman Of All Time) Claressa Shields will be back in the ring on Saturday to defend her undisputed heavyweight status against Lani Daniels in Detroit. Shields is never short of confidence, and that is hardly a surprise given what she has already achieved in her career at the age of 30. The American superstar won two Olympic golds and two World Championship titles as an amateur and has claimed world honours in five different weight divisions since switching to the professional ranks. She is also the only boxer – male or female – to be the undisputed champion in three different weight classes. It is hard to see what else she can do to further her legacy, which begs the question: if she gets past Daniels, what's next? Well, the outspoken Shields has talked up a super-fight with Laila Ali – the daughter of boxing icon Muhammad Ali. But is it realistic? Subscribe to DAZN now to watch over 185 fights a year Ali's inactivity Laila followed in her father's footsteps to win titles in two divisions during her own career before retiring undefeated with 24 wins to her name, including 21 knockouts. She is widely regarded as one of the best female fighters ever. There's just one issue – she has not boxed since 2007. Ali is now 47 and has been retired for almost two decades. In the meantime, she has developed into a TV personality, appearing on some of America's biggest shows including Dancing with the Stars and The Masked Singer. Yet she has remained in tip-top condition since hanging up her gloves and has teased a dramatic comeback to take on Shields. Shields calls Ali's bluff In order to make a return, Ali has made it clear she wants to be paid well. She recently claimed it would take a purse of $15million to tempt her back into the ring for the Shields showdown. Shields responded by posing with a cheque displaying that figure to make a statement that she wants to do everything possible to get the fight made. But Ali has been talking about this fight for several years and it hasn't materialised yet. Back in 2020, she insisted a bout with Shields was 'absolutely possible' but conceded she would no longer be the same force she was in her prime. Five years down the line, Ali is unlikely to be in better shape, and the window is closing on finally making this fight happen. Shields has family plans Shields revealed this week that she wants to have a baby within the next 12 months as she looks to start a family. She plans to return to boxing after giving birth, but having a child would keep her out of the sport for a significant period. If she goes through with her family plans next year, the timeline to face Ali becomes very limited. It would have to happen next as Ali would be pushing 50 by the time Shields came back into the sport. Pacquiao shows Ali the way If Ali needed any inspiration for a comeback, she need look no further than Manny Pacquiao 's performance last weekend. Pacquiao returned from a four-year absence to push WBC welterweight champion Mario Barrios all the way to a majority draw in Las Vegas. The Filipino legend is 46 and proved fighters can make successful comebacks after a lengthy hiatus. Of course, there is a big difference between being away from boxing for four years and the 18 years it has been since Ali last laced up her gloves. Ali would have a lot of ring-rust to shake off and must decide whether she really wants to risk her unbeaten record against Shields after being retired for so long. Will Shields vs Ali happen? Shields likes to put on a show, but she is running out of legitimate opponents. Calling out an all-time great with a legendary father is certainly a smart business move on her part. Ali also seems to be on board if the funds can be raised to give her a career-best payday. And that's ultimately what it may all hinge on – money. There would be plenty of interest in two greats of the sport facing each other, with fans eager to see if Ali has still got it. There is also genuine animosity between the pair, meaning the build-up to the fight would be electric. If promoters can get together and ensure both women are paid well, we could finally see Shields vs Ali, and someone's 0 would have to go.
