UCLA QB Joey Aguilar to transfer to Tennessee football to replace Nico Iamaleava
Aguilar is a veteran quarterback who broke records at Appalachian State and transferred to UCLA in December. He was in line to be the Bruins' starting quarterback until Iamaleava came on the scene.

Iamaleava transferred to UCLA. He entered the portal after leaving Tennessee over a dispute about NIL pay, although his representatives claim it was because of problems with the Vols offense.
Aguilar passed for 6,760 yards and 56 touchdowns in two seasons at Appalachian State. Before that, he passed for almost 3,000 yards and 21 TDs in two seasons at Diablo Valley Community College in Pleasant Hill, California.
He has one season of eligibility remaining because the NCAA granted a blanket waiver to junior college transfers for one additional year.
Aguilar can compete with UT redshirt freshman Jake Merklinger for the starting job in the 2025 season. They will replace Iamaleava, who helped UT to the College Football Playoff last season but left the program after NIL negotiations broke down.

The transfer portal is open April 16-25.
Joey Aguilar stats at Appalachian State before UCLA
Aguilar is experienced with 41 games played in college, including 24 starts at Appalachian State.
The 6-foot-3, 220-pounder is from Antioch, California. He did not receive a Division I scholarship offer out of high school. But he had a successful stint in junior college, which drew multiple FBS offers. He was in line to sign with Coastal Carolina, but a coaching change re-directed his recruitment to Appalachian State.
In 2023, Aguilar was the Sun Belt Newcomer of the Year and the Cure Bowl MVP after breaking multiple school records. He passed for 3,757 yards, 33 TDs and 10 interceptions. And he rushed for 249 yards and three TDs.

In 2024, Aguilar passed for 3,003 yards, 23 TDs and 14 interceptions. And he rushed for 207 yards and two TDs.
That landed him a transfer to UCLA, but his time there was short.
Who Tennessee football has at quarterback
UT has two other scholarship quarterbacks, Merklinger and freshman George MacIntyre.
Merklinger, a former four-star recruit, passed for 48 yards in two games as a freshman in 2024. He was the No. 11 quarterback in the 2024 class, according to 247Sports Composite rankings.
MacIntyre, a four-star recruit, signed with UT in the 2025 class and enrolled in January. The former Brentwood Academy standout was ranked the No. 13 quarterback in the 2025 class.

Bolton football's Joshua Henderson, 16, dies after complications from heat stroke
Joshua Henderson, a Bolton High School football player who'd been hospitalized since collapsing during a July 7 practice, died on July 26, Memphis Shelby County Schools announced in a statement on July 27. Big Ten Network personality Jake Butt picks teams for 2025 Big Ten title game
Another Big Ten football media days is in the books, and now we can focus our attention towards the start of fall camp and the buildup to the start of the 2025 college football season. Ohio State will be defending its College Football Playoff national championship and will look to add a couple of goals it missed out on last season -- winning the Big Ten and beating Michigan. That's not as easy as it used to be with the addition of former Pac-12 schools from the West Coast -- Oregon, Washington, UCLA, and USC-- and with Michigan and Penn State rising up to become national powers as well. The Big Ten has closed the gap on the SEC and created one of its own as the best conference in the country, and it should be another fantastic season in 2025. So, who has the advantage in making the Big Ten Championship game? Ohio State and Penn State are expected to be the best teams this year according to most of the media, but that's not what Jake Butt from the Big Ten Network thinks. In a segment on social media, Butt provided his picks for teams that will play in Indianapolis, and he omitted Ohio State, picking Penn State to tussle with Oregon instead. It's all opinion, of course, and it's not like the Ducks aren't a program to reckon with almost annually now, so there's that. But Butt not identifying his alma mater, Michigan or the Buckeyes, is an interesting take, especially considering Oregon lost as much talent as OSU. But never fear Ohio State fans, Butt did mention Ohio State as one of the teams that will contend for a College Football Playoff spot -- so there's at least that. Ohio State defending its title and having a shot at a conference crown will largely depend on the production it gets at the quarterback spot and how well the defense plugs some of those gaps lost to the NFL. It won't take long to see how those questions are answered because the Buckeyes open up against Texas in Week 1. Let the countdown continue. Tennessee basketball offers 2027 four-star point guard
Tennessee is recruiting toward its 2027 basketball recruiting class. The Vols offered a scholarship to four-star point guard Chase Branham on Wednesday. "I'm blessed to receive an offer from The University of Tennessee," Branham announced. The 6-foot-4, 175-pound prospect is from Logan-Rogersville High School in Rogersville, Missouri. 247Sports ranks Branham as the No. 11 point guard in the class and the No. 3 player in Missouri. Austin Peay was the first school to offer him a scholarship on July 12, 2024. Other schools to offer Branham a scholarship include Missouri, Kansas State, Indiana, Iowa, Creighton and Purdue. Tennessee does not have a commitment for its 2026 or 2027 basketball recruiting classes. The Vols have five commitments in their 2025 basketball recruiting class: forward DeWayne Brown, small forward Amari Evans, point guard Troy Henderson, forward Nate Ament and shooting guard Clarence Massamba.
