Canelo Alvarez has made it very clear who he is backing in Jake Paul fight
Canelo Alvarez is 'rooting' for his fellow countryman, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr, ahead of his upcoming showdown with Jake Paul.
The 'Problem Child' is set to make his highly-anticipated return against Chavez Jr in a cruiserweight contest on June 27 at the Honda Center in Anaheim. Paul, 28, has not fought since defeating former heavyweight world champion Mike Tyson back in November. Despite failing to get the knockout, the young American cruised to a comfortable victory on points.
As for Chavez Jr, the former middleweight world champion has quite the CV - having fought at the top level for quite some time. The 39-year-old has fought the likes of Andy Lee, Marco Antonio Rubio and Anderson Silva. However, he has been rather inactive over the last few years.
He ended a three year hiatus last July when he defeated former UFC middleweight contender Uriah Hall. Despite the inactivity in the ring, Alvarez - who famously beat Chavez Jr back in 2017 - is backing the 39-year-old to get his hand raised on fight night.
Speaking to Fight Hub TV, Alvarez said: 'I'm rooting for Chavez, I think it's a chance for him to redeem himself and it's a great opportunity, I fully trust that he'll secure that victory, I wish him all the best. Julio should win, with good preparation and focus he should come out on top.'
Since confirmation of the contest, many top stars within the sport of boxing been left torn as to who they think will come out on top. However, one individual who is confident Paul will come out on top is Shawn Porter - who was left amused by what he once saw from the Mexican in training.
Speaking on The Porter Way Podcast, he said. 'I got Jake Paul by KO.' The boxing icon then explained how previously seeing Chavez Jr in the gym helped him come to that conclusion. 'He doesn't have a gas tank. That means you're not working and training out of the gym. I saw the in gym stuff and you scratch your head like 'that was it for the day?'
'One day he came into the gym he shadow boxed, I don't know if he made it a round on the bag, then he packed up and left … I've seen some short stuff. I don't want to disrespect but it will make you scratch your head. The other fighters were laughing like 'that was it? Why did he show up?''

Norrie ‘enjoying tennis more than ever' as he stuns Frances Tiafoe
Cameron Norrie is enjoying tennis more than ever after reaching the third round of Wimbledon with a tenacious victory against 12th seed Frances Tiafoe. The British number three caught the attention of the tennis world when making the semi-final of the Championships in 2022, reaching a career-high ranking of eighth in the world during the same season. He is now ranked 61 and would have been regarded an underdog in his second-round tie with the American Tiafoe, but the 29-year-old relished that status and approached the match with a palpable sense of self-belief. Despite losing the first set, Norrie did not lose his cool and applied steady pressure on his opponent to win 4-6 6-4 6-3 7-5 and reach the third round for the fourth time in five years. In doing so he booked a clash with Italy's world number 73 Mattia Bellucci – who shocked Queen's finalist Jiri Lehecka in the second round – and looks set to enter that tie full of confidence. 'I played an unreal match,' he said. 'I think it was a very good performance from me. 'Mentally, as well – I was very stable throughout the whole match. I think if you spoke to Frances he would probably say the same. 'It was a very high-level match. He was playing so well but I never really flinched. I just kept doing what I was doing and made the match on my terms. I can take a lot of confidence from that.' Reflecting on the differences in how he approaches his matches now he has left the top rungs of the ladder in terms of ranking, Norrie added: 'When I was in the top 10 and the top 20, everything was very automatic. I was not thinking. Just very professional. On to the next thing, on to the next thing. 'I think it's a good thing to go through, being injured, not winning, then having resilience to back yourself. 'I'm enjoying my tennis more than ever. It was really nice coming up to get into the top 10 but it's just tough, really tough, to stay there. 'On the flip side side of that, I was coming into the match today against Frances, being the underdog, playing for free. 'It was a lot easier than in the past when I previously played Frances. I was the highest seeded player, the pressure was on me. 'It's nice to hunt the other guys and be on the flip side. It's been good fun trying to get back to where I was. There's still a long way to go.' British wild card Billy Harris was unable to build on his maiden grand slam win as he was beaten in straight sets by world number 37 Nuno Borges. Harris had knocked out veteran Dusan Lajovic in round one but found Portugal's Borges too strong. The 30-year-old from Nottingham had two set points in a third set tie-break but was unable to convert either in a 6-3 6-4 7-6 (7) defeat on Court Two. Eddie Hearn reveals when Anthony Joshua will make boxing return after reviving talks for huge Deontay Wilder fight
ANTHONY JOSHUA has vowed to return to boxing with a bang - as a talk of a fight with Deontay Wilder grows louder. AJ has been sidelined since his September knockout loss to Daniel Dubois and this year underwent elbow surgery. 2 Anthony Joshua is still linked with fighting Deontay Wilder Credit: Richard Pelham / The Sun But promoter Eddie Hearn revealed the two-time heavyweight champion is on track to fight before the year ends with Wilder a top target. He initially held talks with the American's manager Shelly Finkel over a bout with Dave Allen - but now AJ is ready to take on Wilder himself. Hearn told SunSport at the launch of Matchroom's rebrand: "I think it's a great fight. "I mean there's jeopardy in it, it's dangerous. Originally I was speaking to Shelly about Dave Allen. READ MORE IN BOXING DON'T JOSH AROUND Hearn won't rule out AJ vs Jake Paul fight after talks with YouTube star "I kind of get the feeling that Wilder wants to get a few fights under the belt, get a bit of confidence back. "I think it's great to see him returning, it's really important that Deontay is still in the heavyweight division. "AJ I will be here tonight. We've just started pinging a few opponents backwards and forwards, nothing really to talk about, but you will see AJ in the ring, November or December." Joshua, 35, and Wilder, 39, were once close to agreeing a huge undisputed title decider before rival broadcasters and promoters got in the way. CASINO SPECIAL - BEST CASINO BONUSES FROM £10 DEPOSITS Saudi boxing supremo Turki Alalshikh then tried to revive the bout last year - until disaster struck. Wilder was beaten by Joseph Parker on points and knocked out by Zhilei Zhang - once again KOing the clash. Anthony Joshua vows to take heavyweight division 'by storm' in boxing return and reveals reason for YEAR long break The former WBC champ took time off before returning in a confidence-building bout against Tyrrell Herndon - winning in seven rounds. Wilder could even box in one more tune-up before jumping back into the big time - while AJ is also ready to return after giving his body a rest. He said: "I took a year out, first time in about 12 to 13 years as a professional, not even including the amateur stuff. "But I took a year out, get my body right. I'm at a different stage in my career where I can look at time a bit differently. "I'm all these years in front of me like the main man here, so I gotta make like really executive decisions about what I do next. "So the minute I come back, you know I'll come back with a bang rather than just keep rolling through and just going with the motions of the sport. "I just thought, let me take some time out so when I do come back I come back fully active and ready to go and take the division by storm again."
