Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus did not mince his words in the post-match press conference following his side's unconvincing 42-24 victory over a spirited Italy at Loftus Versfeld.
Erasmus conceded that the performance had not met the world champions' standards — and there's little doubt the players received a stern dressing-down in the change room.

Clean up the breakdown
Italy coach Gonzalo Quesada outwitted the Boks at the breakdown — and he did it with precision. The Azzurri committed numbers and played with ferocity, frequently blasting the Boks off the ball or slowing it down. Without quick ball, the Springboks' attacking ambitions faltered. Expect Monday's training to be breakdown-focused, with a clear directive to restore order at the ruck.
Play with width
Against Italy, the Boks reverted to a more direct style, likely influenced by the opposition and the absence of key players. But the Tony Brown-influenced approach relies on width and tall, powerful carriers in the wider channels. The return of Siya Kolisi and Pieter-Steph du Toit this week will likely see them deployed as wide ball-carriers to stretch the defence and create space.

Shore up the maul defence
A 20-metre rolling maul try from Italy?
That's not a sight many would expect to see. The Springboks' pride will have taken a hit when their vaunted pack was driven backwards. It may have stemmed from a technical lapse — but whatever the cause, it's unlikely to be repeated. This week, the lineout and maul defence will be a non-negotiable focus.

Play for 80 minutes
South Africa looked poised for a rout at 28-3 up at half-time, but they failed to sustain their dominance. Italy fought back and narrowed the deficit to just 11 points late in the match. Erasmus admitted in his presser that playing for only 50 to 60 minutes is unacceptable at Test level. You can be sure that this message will be delivered with added bluntness in the first team meeting of the week.

Fire up the Bomb Squad
For once, the Bomb Squad misfired — and they'll know it. Quesada's so-called 'Grenade Squad' outmuscled the South Africans off the bench. The Boks' replacements take great pride in their impact, and their collective pride will have been wounded. Expect a fierce response from the bench this week, with a renewed intent to dominate the final quarter.
Erasmus and his coaching team have plenty to address — but also plenty of firepower returning to the mix. In front of a passionate Eastern Cape crowd, the Boks will be desperate to reassert their dominance and silence any lingering doubts.

The Springboks certainly won't be short on motivation when they take on Italy in their second Test in Gqeberha on Saturday, 12 July. While the Boks secured a 42-24 win in Pretoria in their first Test of the season against the Azzurri, there is much to improve on by their standards. While there were players who were on fire, there were also those whose performances wouldn't exactly be a feature in their career highlights reel. So, with another clash against the spirited Italians coming up, here are three players to watch (for different reasons). The Springbok fullback will become the eighth South African to earn 100 Test caps on Saturday. Needless to say, it's a remarkable feat, so it goes without saying that he'd want to have a blinder come the weekend. And it's certainly something he can do. When he's good, he's great. And if he fires in his full-circle moment, it will be an unforgettable occasion. Le Roux made his Test debut against Italy in Durban in 2013, and his milestone will see him join Eben Etzebeth, Jean de Villiers, Tendai Mtawarira, John Smit, Victor Matfield, Bryan Habana, and Percy Montgomery in an elite group as Bok centurions. The flyhalf was in top form against the Barbarians, nailing all five of his attempts off the tee in extremely testing conditions and sparking the Boks' attack after coming on for Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu in the second half. Given all the flak he's copped for his goal-kicking, that area was the most inpressive factor in an overall shining personal performance in a wet and windy Cape Town. His starting berth alongside scrumhalf Grant Williams is a mouth-watering one. And, given the wizardry magical Manie can create, we can see this as another opportunity for him to do what only he can and send out yet another reminder of his abilities (not that it's needed at this point). The Stormers loose forward was initially omitted from the Bok squad, and that alone should fuel him when he comes off the bench. Speculation was rife when Roos was left out of the initial 54-man squad. But, following Bulls No 8 Cameron Hanekom's injury and Roos' call-up, Bok coach Rassie Erasmus explained that his initial omission was 'nothing personal' and that they simply opted for players in better form. That alone should have a galvanising effect when he provides impact off the bench against the Azzurri. He will be the eighth Springbok to do so. 'Willie has been a stalwart for us in the last few years after making his debut against Italy in Durban in 2013, and he's a fantastic playmaker, so we are thrilled to see him achieve this incredible feat,' Erasmus said. New-look Springbok side The coach had earlier said he may have to make changes for the clash at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium (kick-off 5.10pm) after the Springboks secured a frustrating 42–24 win at Loftus last week. The understrength, 10th-ranked side looked good in that game, scoring four tries against the world champions and holding them off in defence for much of the match. The Italians were especially good in the lineout and at the breakdown, resulting in the Springboks approaching World Rugby's refereeing department for clarity on certain decisions around the breakdown While waiting for feedback, Erasmus named a new-look side, only retaining hooker Malcolm Marx, tighthead prop Wilco Louw, No 6 flanker Marco van Staden and No 8 Jasper Wiese.
